SHELLED LONG FINGERLESS GLOVES

I just finished working on a shelled beret, and thought I’d make a pair of long gloves as well .. and made them extra long –and on completion, my daughter just commented that the shells (which I’d added at the elbow end) looked really nice, so check out what I’ve designed.

Materials used : Oswal Cashmilon 4-ply acrylic yarn with a 4 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends

This yarn is not specific for this project.

You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros e ; Red rose metallic or unbranded knitting cotton as well as Vardhaman acrylic yarns

International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn ; Alize bamboo yarn ; Spotlight stores 4-Seasons Marvel and Stallion yarns or Hobby Lobby I-Love-this-cotton yarn

Gauge : 1 shell across x 2 shells (rows) = 1”

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Extended Single Crochet (e-sc) : hk into st, yo (2 lps on hk), pull through one lp, yo (2 lps on hk),pull through both lps. One e-sc made. (An e-sc is basically an sc on an sc)

(Extended Double Crochet) e-dc : Yo, insert hk into st, yo, pull through 1 loop (3 loops on hk), yo, pull through 2 lps ( 2 lps on hk), yo, pull through both sts. One e-dc made. (This is like an sc over a regular dc).

Instructions (Using U.S terminology)
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.

We start our glove from the elbow end and come down to the palm/fingers, and we work our pattern in rounds. Hence after Round 1, check that the round made fits the arm where you want it to.

Foundation double crochet (fdc) : This is a unique way of starting a project directly with a row of double crochet stitches. Here is an easy video tutorial https://youtu.be/hjNUYVvyU9k

Round 1 : Start with 24 fdc (or multiples of 4).

Join with a slip stitch to the 1^st fdc, ensuring that you keep your chain flat.

Round 2 : first shell in the 1^st dc, sk 1 dc , sc in next dc ;

*sk 1 dc, shell in next dc ; sk 1 dc, sc in next dc* ;

rep from * to * till end. Join with a slip stitch to the 1^st stitch. (6 shells)

Round 3 : first shell in the 1^st sc (between the 1^st 2 shells) ,

sc in the ch-2 sp of the next shell ;

*shell in the next sc (between the next 2 shells) , sc in the ch-2 sp of the

next shell* ;

rep from * to * till end.

Join with a slip stitch to the 1^st st (which is the ch of the first shell). (6 shells)

Round 4 : first shell in the space between the 1^st 2 shells ,

sc in the ch-2 sp of the next shell ;

*shell in the next sc (between the next 2 shells) , sc in the ch-2 sp of the

next shell* ;

rep from * to * till end.

Join with a slip stitch to the 1^st st (which is the ch of the first shell). (6 shells)

Change to 4 mm crochet hook and rep Round 4 till you have a length of 10.5” (or the length you want from your elbow to the base of your thumb)

Next Round : Thumb opening :

ch 2, sc in the next ch-2 sp

(sp between next shell) ; shell in the next 5 shells ;

ch 5, sc in the next sc (where you started with your ch-2)

Note : This ch-5 is the opening for your thumb.

Pop your thumb in and see if it works, else pl add/decrease opening.

Last Round : first shell in the 1^st sc, sc in the ch-2 sp of the next shell :

*shell in the next sc, sc in the next ch-2 sp* ,

rep from * to* 5 times.

Join with a slip stitch to the 1^st shell.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Note : Slip your lovely glove onto your hand just before you fasten off.. see if you are happy with the length, else do one more round of the last round before you fasten off.
