WICKER BASKET BAG

Just recently someone made a scarf swatch in a basket-like weave .. or was it a Celtic weave.. and I remembered that I’d made a scarf (and shawl) in basket weave, but not a bag or a basket

I also found that I had this lovely thick shiny malai dori (an Indian polyester viscose yarn, a sport / DK ply thickness) in a nice fawn colour that would be just perfect for this project.. So hooks and yarn out.. here’s what I’ve come up with.

Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Difficulty level : Intermediate crochet skills

Materials used : Today I’ve used our Indian malai dori polyester viscose  yarn,  with a 5 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends stitch markers ; embroidery needle.

For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros or unbranded knitting cotton as well
General yarn info : This polyester yarn is available only in India.

The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Pattern Instructions : Using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.

In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and bag measurement.  This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

I’ve made a scarf in this lovely basket-weave pattern and am using that pattern to make this purse.  Here’s that link http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/crocheting/accessory/wicker-scarf/79501

I’ve changed the pattern a little bit for this purse – but I’m sure you can use the link above if you like that pattern, so have fun
We’re going to start with a circular base, and then work our basket weave pattern up from there.

Join with a sl-st to the 1st hdc.
Pull lightly to close the magic circle.

Round 1 : 2 hdc in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.

Rep Rounds 4 , increasing 9 sts each round, till you have a base of the size you want for your bag.

Next round : In this last round for the base, sc in back loops only (blo), so that we get an edge that will not just look good, but also hold the bag base down flat.

Single crochet back loop only (sc-blo) : Here is an easy video tutorial

Main body pattern for sides / top of our basket weave bag

Round 2 : bpdc in the 1st 3 dc ;
*fpdc in the next 3 dc ; bpdc in the next 3 dc* ;
