INTERESTING MARKET BAG 2
This is the next market bag I’m making with a stash of yarn I’ve been gifted.
Now with the increasing awareness to stop using plastic, market bags will be the rage.. come along and beat the rush.. make yours now.
Thank you for joining me.
In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”. Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.
All my blogs can be printed. Find the printer friendly (green) link at the bottom of this blog. You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.
Remember that you only print if absolutely essential. Save paper – Save Our Earth.
Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation.
Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.
To purchase this or similar yarn online, click here to buy your yarns online via Amazon. While you will still pay the same, I may get paid by Amazon as well.
This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me. Cheers.
My earlier market bag was started from the bottom
and worked up – with this one, the end result is the same – a market bag – but
I’m constructing it a bit differently.
May I request you to please read through all
my detailed instructions before you pick up your hook. My notes will give you an idea of where you
are headed. Cheers.
General yarn info : This polyester yarn is available only in India.
The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.
For Non-Indians : The malai
dori yarn is available only in India (to
my knowledge). This yarn has a 6 / 8-ply thickness.
You can make this project with any yarn
and a hook that suits it. Bulky weight yarn or tee-shirt yarns are good options as one would not need to line the project but any yarn, including your stash, will work with this project.
Skill level : Easy
to Intermediate.
Half Double Crochet : Hdc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps. One hdc made.
Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8
Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.
Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Abbreviations used :
(Using U.S terminology)
lp(s) : Loop(s)
sc
: Single crochet
dc : Double crochet sp

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
For today’s interesting market bag, we will start from the bottom and work our way all the way up to the top.
For today’s
interesting market bag, we will work in three pieces.
Two small rectangles will form the sides of
the bag, and one large rectangle will form the body of the bag.
This diagram is
for explanation and not to scale
For this
project, I plan on randomly changing colours and adding beads to give a funky
look – I will leave all of that to your creativity and the yarn you have in hand.
Please check the top of this blog for links on how
to work with beads and changing colours of yarn for a neat finish.
Part 1 : Sides of the bag :
Make two
For this
section, you need to decide how long and how wide you want your bag.
We will start with the number of stitches you
want for the length (top to bottom) of your bag, and then work as many
rows as you want for the width.
I have worked
the full bag in single crochet and in back loops only (sc-blo).
Single crochet back loop only (sc-blo) : Here is an easy video tutorial
While you can
start with any number of stitches, let’s start with 30 fsc
Start : with 30 fsc (which is about 10”). Turn.
Row 1 : sc-blo in the 1st fsc and in each fsc till
end. Turn
Row 2 : sc-blo in the 1st sc and in each sc till
end. Turn.
Rep Row 2 till your
work is about 3” wide – or as wide as you think you want the side of your bag
to be – let your creative juices and imagination flow.
For the last
row, we will work as usual till the end of the row, and then work around the
width or bottom of the rectangle, and then back up the top of the other
side of this rectangle side piece.
Last Row / Round : sc-blo in the 1st sc and the next
29 sc ;
3 sc in the
last sc ;
turn and work 1 sc in each sc along the bottom
till the last sc ;
3 sc in the
last sc ;
turn and work 1 sc in each sc along the bottom
till the last 29 sc.
Fasten off and
weave in ends.
Work one more
side piece exactly like this. Keep aside.
Now calculations :
1.
The
front and back for the body of the bag are worked in one piece like a rectangle
2. We need to calculate the length for
our body rectangle, the width is as wide as you want it to be – no calculation
needed.
3. For the length we need (2 x length + 1
x width) of side piece
4. Visualise that you are working down along the
length of one side piece then under the bottom (width) of the
same side piece, and finally up the
length of the same side piece. That
is how long we need the body rectangle piece.
5. In numbers : Let’s say we are working a side
piece rectangle with 30 sc along length and 9 sc along the width. So the centre body piece is (2 x 30 + 1 x 0)
= 69 sts. Got it?
6. So with these numbers, you will work a body
rectangle which is 69 sc long and then as wide as you wish. Easy enough, right?
7. After you work the first fsc row (for body
piece), please check that you are able to wrap it neatly around the
sides and bottom of that side piece. When
checking, do not stretch either piece, but allow the stitches to align
neatly.
Now the
“pattern” is really simple. I just
continued working in back loop all through.
It also helps if you are working with different coloured yarns.
So just work
the centre piece and we’ll get back together to join and finish up.
Part 2 : Joining
Place the body of the bag such that you first
attach one side of the side to one side of the body ; you then continue along
the bottom of the side piece, and then finally up the same side piece till you
have the body firmly joined to the side.
Repeat this for the other side of the bag as
well.
Invisible join : Here’s a quick tutorial on how to join using the embroidery needle and whipstitch to get an invisible join at

Part 3 : Finishing :
Once you have got the bag neatly completed, use
the links below to work the finishing.
