LIL MR. TEDDY BEAR  1

I am participating in the Ravellenics Games and if you’ve been following my blogs then you already know that.  The Ravellenics Games (for all newbies tomy blog) are games that have been organized by a craft group Ravelry – at a time of the Olympics ..and is just a fun way to challenge oneself

There are several Game Categories, and virtual medals that will be given a the end of a successful completion of a challenge.
One of the challenges is called a Toy Toss.  I was keen on participating in this, but couldn’t think of a toy to make – and then yet again Providence stepped in.

My sister in law is part of the Rotary Club in Brisbane, and her club is working on a Toy Donation that they’ve called Trauma Teddies.  The little donated teddy bears are donated to children who’ve inadvertently been in trauma incidents.
I am going to try and make a few teddy bears to send to this lovely incentive.

The drive has a link for a free pattern but it was in knitting – and though I do knit, I much prefer crochet.
If you knit and would like to join this donation drive, check this link.

And there is a knitted pattern for this teddy bear at http://www.rotarynews.info/2/club/76644/9122

I’ve decided to use this pattern(with their permission) to try and make a crochet teddy bear, using the knitted pattern above as an inspiration and baseline – so do join me in my adventure.

Thank you for joining me.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.  This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

Our little teddy bear is made in one continuous pattern, starting with the feet, then working the body, adding on the two arms, and then working the head , and then continuously working the back of the body, two arms and the two feet.  So what you end up with is a really weird looking flat piece.

In the pattern below, I’m writing it like you are working the whole thing in one colour.  For working it with a t-shirt like finish, please go to the end and check ideas and tweaks just before finishing.
In the rough diagram below, the green rectangles are the legs, the blue is the body, and the orange are the arms. This diagram is only for explanation and is not to scale.

Part 1 : First leg of our teddy bear

Start with 8 fsc.  Turn

Row 1 : sc in the 1st fsc and in each fsc till end.  Turn

We need to work a total of 16 rows for this leg.

Rows 2 - 16 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc till end.
Turn.  Fasten off and weave in ends

Part 2 : Second leg of our teddy bear

Start with 8 fsc.  Turn

Row 1 : sc in the 1st fsc and in each fsc till end.  Turn

We need to work a total of 16 rows for this leg too.

Rows 2 - 16 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc till end.  Turn.

We will now work on the body of our teddy bear.
So you will join this leg to the earlier one you’ve made and work in one continuous row across all 16 sc for the next 16 rows.

Row 17 – 23 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc till end.  Turn.

We will now add on the two arms.  Now to work in a continuous way, we will add on 8 ch as we complete the next row.  We will then fasten off and go around to the next side and start with a chain length and then work on all the sts together.

Row 24 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc till end.
Ch 8.  Fasten off.
On this end, we need to add the same 8 ch as we have for the other end.
So first re-attach your yarn at this end of the teddy bear body, and let’s start our chains.

Row 25 : ch 9. Sc in the 2nd ch from hk.
Sc in the next 7 ch.
Sc in the next 16 sc ; sc in the next 8 ch.  Turn.

We need to work a total of 8 rows for the arms.

Row 26 - 32 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc till end.  Turn.

We’re done with our teddy bear’s cute lil arms.
So we will need to sl-st till we are back just on the body portion to work the head.

Row 33 : sl-st into the 1st 8 sc. Sc in the next 16 sc.
Turn. (leave the last 8 sc unworked)

We need to work a total of 38 rows for the head, on just the 16 sc of the body.

Row 33 - 69 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc till end.  Turn.

We now need to add ch for the arms. So yet again, to work in a continuous way, we will add on 8 ch as we complete the next row.  We will then fasten off and go around to the next side and start with a chain length and then work on all the sts together.

On this end, we need to add the same 8 ch as we have for the other end.  So first re-attach your yarn at this end of the teddy bear body, and let’s start our chains.

Row 70 : ch 9. Sc in the 2nd ch from hk.
Sc in the next 7 ch.
Sc in the next 16 sc ; sc in the next 8 ch.  Turn

We need to work a total of 8 rows for the arms.

Row 71 - 78 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc till end.  Turn.

We’re done with our teddy bear’s second set of lil arms.
So we will need to sl-st till we are back just on the body portion to work the head.

Row 79 : sl-st into the 1st 8 sc. Sc in the next 16 sc.
Turn. (leave the last 8 sc unworked)

We need to work a total of 8 rows for the body once, on just the 16 sc of the body.

Row 80 - 88 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc till end.  Turn.

We will now continue straight down on just 8 sc for one leg.  Once we complete this leg, we will re-attach our yarn for the 2nd leg.

Row 89 - 104 : sc in the 1st sc and in the next 7 sc. (8 sc).
Fasten off and leave a longish tail for sewing up.

Re-attach your yarn on the 9th sc and we will work on the last 8 sc for 16 rows for the 2nd leg.
For convenience (and fun), I’m numbering these rows “A”

Row 89A – 104A : sc in the 1st sc and in the next 7 sc. (8 sc).
Fasten off and leave a longish tail for sewing up.

Part 2 : Ideas & Tweaks
So far I’ve written it like we’re working it all in one colour. Here are a few ideas though to tweak this a bit.
1.       Work it all in one colour for the teddy bear and make a cute little tee-shirt that you could pull onto your little toy.  If you’re doing this, then you will need to work 16 sc all around for the body, and the same number of rows as we’ve worked for the chest / body length till neck, and  you  will work two parts like this and then attach it on the sides and shoulders.
2.     If you wish to have a ‘faux’ tee-shirt by taking the trouble of changing yarns when working, then you can either take your yarn along when changing yarns (check links above for a “how to”) and add on the tee-shirt as you’re constructing your teddy bear body
3.     You will add on your tee-shirt colour at the row just after you’ve completed both the individual legs , and are working on the 16 sc for the body.  You could now decide if you want it full sleeved or sleeveless.
4.     If you want sleeveless, then when you attach on the yarn for the 8 sc of the arm, you will use the body colour, and you will change colours for body and arms.
5.     You will work only 8 rows in body colour for the arm on either side, and will have the tee-shirt colour for the 16 centre sts
6.     Once you’ve finished the arms, you’re at the shoulders of the teddy bear.  At this point, you will re-attach your body colour and you will work on the 16 sc of the body (so basically on the top of the tee-shirt sts) for the next 38 rows that will make up the head.
7.     Once again, we’re back to working our two arms – so body colour for the arms and you will then re-attach yarn for tee-shirt
8.     Work arms and tee-shirt / body in their individual colours.
9.     Fasten off arm colour. Continue with tee-shirt / body till you’re at the point where we need to divide for the legs.  Leave a longish yarn of tee-shirt colour for sewing up.
10.  Fasten off the tee-shirt colour and re-attach body colour yarn for the first leg.  Work on the 1st 8 sc for the 1st leg.  Then re-attach body colour for the 2nd leg, ensuring that you are leaving a longish yarn for sewing up.

Part 3 : Finishing
You should have a really funny looking set of rectangles – but I’m sure you have figured out how this all comes together.  Let’s get it done now.
1.       Fold your project in half lengthwise – with the head portion on top and the two legs hanging below.
2.     Using an embroidery needle and black thread, embroider a pair of eyes (using the French knot embroidery stitch – a “how to” given above) and a tiny little mouth.
3.     Using an embroidery needle, start attaching your legs.  Stuff.
4.     Continue attaching your body on either side.  Stuff
5.     Neatly sew up ends of the arms.  Stuff.
6.     Sew up one side of the head.  Stuff.
7.     Neatly sew up the second side of head.  Fasten off.
8.     For the ears, work a back-stitch diagonal line across the corner of the top of the head to the side of the head.  Work this line tightly till the ear pops out a little. You may need to work on both the front and back of the head to get this neatly finished.
9.     Finally add a ribbon around the neck.  Ensure that this is well secured around in case your gift is being given to a baby or a small child.
