YODA INSPIRED BOTTLE COVER

You don’t need to be a Star Wars fan to recognize this famous character.
May the force be with you too.
Thank you for joining me.

This is my original pattern and if you make it, I’d expect that you share my blog post URL when you share your project on social media.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.
Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest…?

Materials used : Just a little bit of Oswal Cashmilon acrylic 4-ply yarn, with a 4 mm crochet hook.  You need three colours – green , brown and off white / taupe.
You can work in knitting cotton too – I just had the coolest little bits of acrylic handy so am using up my little bits of stash.
You can make this project with any yarn and a hook that suits it.

Skill level :  Intermediate to Advanced

Stitches used :
Starting slip knot : Here’s how you start with a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/lJcqsVcs8cw

Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : This is a neat new way to start your work without a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs

What is a chain stitch ? Here is an easy video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXx5ukBjKkY

Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro

First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Sweet Nothings Crochet free crochet pattern blog, photo of the Yoda inspired bottle cover, photo of the Yoda bottle cover used over a wine bottle,

Let’s visualize our project before we start, shall we?
We are making a Yoda of Star Wars inspired soap dispenser cover today.
So once again, I thought of using the Messy Bun Cap idea for our cover today.

What does that mean?
Well, we will start at the top of the project but not close that end up (i.e.  just like we would if making a messy bun cap)
This end then is the top of your dispenser where the knob / “pushy part” of your dispenser goes through.
The rest of the project is then worked all the way to the bottom for the length of your bottle.
We then will work on the jacket and blissl for Yoda

What do you need to do before you start?

1.        Measure your bottle(s) and figure out what approx length and width you’d like.
2.      You also need to measure the ‘neck’ of your bottle and ensure that the opening (of this Messy Bun Cap) goes around.
3.      The three colours of yarn as mentioned above.

I work a ch 1 as a turning chain at the start of each row for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for loads of video tutorials on all stitches used in this pattern sheet.

Part 1 : Yoda body

Sweet Nothings Crochet free crochet pattern blog, photo of the Yoda inspired bottle cover, full photo of the Yoda bottle cover

Start Round 1 :  Using green : with 15 ch.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
If you have a standard bottle with a standard nozzle / knob, this should suffice. In case you have a larger knob, work as many chain as needed to go comfortably around.
In the next round, however, work the same number of stitches as given.

I have worked hdc for the yoke, but you could work a dc or sc as well.
Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8

Round 2 :  work 20 hdc in the circle made.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 3 : 2 hdc in the 1st hdc ;
*hdc in the next hdc ; 2 hdc in the next hdc* ;
rep *to* all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 4 : 2 dc in the 1st hdc ;
*dc in the next 6 hdc ; 2 dc in the next hdc* ;
rep *to* till end ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (34 sts)

Fasten off green.  Attach brown yarn.

Round 5 :  dc in the 1st dc and in each dc all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Now place this on your bottle and see if you need any further increases.

I do not think you would, so we will now continue without increase for the length of the bottle.

Rep Round 5, without increase, till the end.
Fasten off.  Weave in ends.

Part 2 : Yoda face :  Using green yarn
We will work in spirals (without joining at the end of each round with a sl-st) for this part of the pattern.  Please use markers for convenience.  Move markers at the end of each round.

Check the top of this blog for a  video tutorial of a magic circle.

Start Round 1 :  Using green : with a magic circle and work 6 sc in it.
Place marker on last sc.

Round 2 :  2 sc in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.
Move marker (12 sts)

Round 3 :  2 sc in the 1st sc ; sc in the next sc ;
*2 sc in the next sc ; sc in the next sc* ;
rep *to* all around.
Move marker (18 sts)

Round 4 :  2 sc in the 1st sc ; sc in the next 2 sc ;
*2 sc in the next sc ; sc in the next 2 sc* ;
rep *to* all around.
Move marker (24 sts)

Round 5 :  2 sc in the 1st sc ; sc in the next 3 sc ;
*2 sc in the next sc ; sc in the next 3 sc* ;
rep *to* all around.
Move marker (30 sts)

We will now work on our first ear.
For the ear, we will work side to side in rows.
We will finish one ear and then carry on to make the 2nd one.

Ear Row 1 : sc in the next 5 sc.  Turn
Ear Row 2 : sc in all 5 sc.  Turn
Ear Row 3 : sc 2-tog over the 1st 2 sc ;
sc in the next sc ;
sc 2-tog over the last 2 sc.  Turn
Ear Row 4 : sc in all 3 sc.  Turn
Ear Row 5 : dc 3-tog over all 3 sc.  Turn

Double crochet 3-tog : dc 3-tog :   Here is an easy video tutorial https://youtu.be/qlnqXDB3OUM

Now let’s carry on to make the 2nd ear.
You’re at the top end of one ear.
Work sl-sts and make your way down the ear to the face.
It does not matter how many sl-st you use.  Just keep a count and work the same number for the other side.

Ear Row 6 : sc in the next 14 sc.  Turn
Ear Rows 7 - 10 : Rep Ear Rows 2 – 5

Once again you’re at the top end of the ear.
Work sl-sts and make your way down the ear to the face.
Fasten off and keep a tail for attachment.

Part 3 : Jacket

Start Row 1 :  Using off white : with 20 fsc.  Turn.

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : To refresh your skill on the fsc, please view this video https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

Let’s place markers.  Place 1st marker on the 4th st ; 2nd marker on the 7th st ; 3rd marker on the 14th and last marker on the 17th st.

Row 2 :  hdc in the 1st st and the next 2 sts till 1st marker ;
*(hdc ; ch 1, hdc) in the marked st ; hdc in each st till the next marker* ;
rep *to* till end.  Turn.
Remove markers.

Row 3 :  hdc in the 1st st and all hdc till 1st ch-1 sp ;
*(hdc ; ch 1, hdc) in the ch-1 sp ; hdc in each st till the next ch-1 sp* ;
rep *to* till end.  Turn.

Rows  4 & 5 :  Rep Row 3.

In the following row, we will shape out armholes, by skipping sts on both sides.

Row 6 :  hdc in the 1st st and all hdc till 1st ch-1 sp ;
(hdc in the ch-1 sp ; ch 3, sk all the hdc till the next ch-1 sp , hdc in the next ch-1 sp) [first armhole made] ;
hdc in all hdc till the next ch-1 sp ;
rep (to) once ; [2nd armhole made] ;
hdc in all hdc till the end.  Turn.

Row 7 :  hdc in the 1st hdc and in each hdc till the ch-3 sp ;
(3 hdc in the ch-3 sp ; hdc in each hdc till the next ch-3 sp ;
3 hdc in the ch-3 sp) ;
hdc in each hdc till the end.  Turn.

Row 8 :  hdc in the 1st hdc and in each hdc till the end.  Turn.

Rep Row 8 till you have the same length for the jacket as for the body. (or length of bottle)

Sleeves :
Re-attach your yarn at the bottom of the armhole.
Round 1 : Work 1 hdc in each st all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Rep Round 1 till your sleeve is about 2 – 2.5” long and about half the length of the jacket.

Part 6 :  Finishing :

Sweet Nothings Crochet free crochet pattern blog, photo of the Yoda inspired bottle cover, photo of the Yoda bottle cover used as a wine bottle cover,

1.        Place the green body onto the bottle and then  place the ‘face’ onto the top it.  Pin and then neatly attach.  Take a look at my project
2.      Attach the two eyes in the centre of the face.
3.      For his blissl / pan-flute, I have used a bit of yarn and attached a longish bead at the end.  Ensure that this is long enough to go around the neck of your bottle and still land on Yoda’s stomach.
4.     Slip on the jacket.  I have attached the bottom of the sleeve to the side of the jacket so that it does not stand out at a weird angle ;)
