Materials used : Today I’ve used our lovely Oswal 4-ply acrylic yarn with a 3.5 mm crochet hook
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic or  unbranded  knitting cotton as well as Vardhaman acrylic yarns

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Difficulty level : Easy

Stitches used :
Starting slip knot : Here’s how you start with a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/lJcqsVcs8cw

Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : This is a neat new way to start your work without a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs

Abbreviations used :
sc : single crochet               dc : Double crochet
ch : chain                             ch-sp : chain space
sp : space                            rep : Repeat
hk : hook                              lp (s) : loop(s)
yo : yarn over                       sl-st : slip stitch
dc 3-tog : double crochet 3-together
fpdc : front post double crochet

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.  For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

We start out quill feather at the base, with the ‘stem’ bit and then work on the feathery bit.  The beauty of this pattern is that you can change colours at any time.. or choose to work the whole quill feather in a multi colored yarn for ease.

What is a chain stitch ? Here is an easy video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXx5ukBjKkY

What is a slip stitch : Here is a neat video tutorial at https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Start Row 1 : with ch 10.
Turn and work a sl-st in the 2nd ch from hk ;
sl-st in the next 4 ch ;
ch 7.  Turn.

In the following row, we will work a dc 3-tog over 3 sts
Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Double crochet 3-tog : dc 3-tog :   Here is an easy video tutorial at https://youtu.be/qlnqXDB3OUM

Row 2 : dc in the 4th ch from hk ;
2 more dc in the same 4th ch from hk ;
dc 3-tog over the next 3 ch ;
dc in the centre st (which is the ‘stem’ that we’ve created) ;
dc 3-tog over the next 3 ch ; 3 dc in the last ch.  Turn.

In the following row, we will work a fpdc
Front Post Double Crochet : fpdc : Post stitches are stitches worked around the post of a stitch of the row below.
How to work the fpdc :  yo, hk into sp between posts of st from row below – going from back of stitch, around st and into the front of the st ; yo, pull yarn through the sps (3 lps on hk), (yo & pull through 2 lps) twice.  One fpdc complete

Row 3 : 3 dc in the 1st dc ;
dc 3-tog over the next 3 dc ;
fpdc over the next dc ; dc 3-tog over the next 3 dc ;
 3 dc in the last dc.  Turn.

In the following row, we will work a bpdc
Back Post Double Crochet : bpdc : Post stitches are stitches worked around the post of a stitch of the row below.  Here is an easy video tutorial for the bpdc at https://youtu.be/l9Nt3miOs3s

Row 4 : 3 dc in the 1st dc ; dc 3-tog over the next 3 dc ;
bpdc over the next dc ; dc 3-tog over the next 3 dc ;
3 dc in the last dc.  Turn.

Rep Rows 3 & 4 for as long as you want it ; ending with Row 4 repeat.

Now for the pointed tip of the feather we will work the last three rows.
The next row is obviously not Row 5, but for convenience, let’s number it that way.

Row 5 : 2 dc in the 1st dc ; dc 3-tog over the next 3 dc ;
fpdc in the next st ; dc 3-tog over the next 3 dc ;
2 dc in the last dc.

In the following row, we will work a dc 2-tog over 2 sts
Double crochet 2-tog : dc 2-tog :  [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;
{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 2 times.  One dc 2-tog made.
This video tutorial at https://youtu.be/1_oPlUfN5eg shows you how to use the dc 2-tog to decrease.
Sometimes we work the dc 2-tog in the same stitch, to use as a decorative stitch. Visit this video tutorial at https://youtu.be/lLUXOJ1sY9w

Row 6 : dc in the 1st dc ; dc 2-tog over the next 2 dc ;
bpdc in the next st ; dc 2-tog over the next 2 dc ;
dc in the last dc.

Row 7 : dc in the 1st 2 sts ; fpdc in the next st ;
dc 2-tog over the last 2 dc.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Single crochet 3-tog : sc 3-tog :   Here is an easy video tutorial at

Optional last row : I opted to end off with a sc 3-tog over all 3 sts.

And that’s our feather pattern d..o..n..e !!
