Today we have five parts to our creation – making of the different parts of our owl, preparing the ring and then finishing and putting it all together.

We need a total of four colors : one for the centre of eyes, one for around eyes, one for the nose, and the last main color for the body and ears

Part 1 : Eyes (Make 2)
Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro

What is a slip stitch : Here is a neat video tutorial at https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

Start Round 1 : (using white yarn) with a magic circle and work 10 dc in it.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 2 : 2 dc in the 1st dc and in each dc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Change to contrast color for around eyes ; fasten off white.

Round 3 : sc in the 1st st and in each st all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Fasten off contrast color and leave a tail for attachment on one eye piece.
Make 2nd eye in the same way.

How to change colors seamlessly : Here’s an easy video tutorial to show you how to change from the Main color to the Contrast or second color of yarn seamlessly.

Once both eyes are done, place them next to one another and attach them together using any 3 stitches per side of eye
(I used an embroidery needle)

Part 2 : Nose
Start Row 1 : with nose color yarn and a magic circle.
Work 3 dc in it.
Pull together but do not close – leave like a semicircle.

Row 2 : sc in all 3 dc.
Fasten off and leave a tail for attachment.

To finish and attach : Please look at the photo above and attach this tiny triangular nose to the bottom of the eyes.
(Once again, I used an embroidery needle for attachment)

Part 3 : Body
Re-attach your body color yarn to the 1st st of around eye (in my case the green round) just next to the nose.
In this body section, there is a lot of turning back and forth – as we work in rounds and rows.  Please pay attention.

Single crochet 2-together : sc 2-tog :
Insert hk into st, yo and pull up a lp (2 lps on hk) ;
insert hk into next sc, yo and pull up a lp (3 lps on hk);
yo and draw through all 3 lps.  One sc 2-tog complete.

We will now work around the eyes for the head and we will work one ear at a time, as we work around the head.
Round 1 : sc in the 1st 15 sts ;
Turn (and work 1st ear) ;
{sc in the 1st 5  sts.  Turn ;
sc in the 1st 3 sts , sc 2-tog over the last 2 sts ;  Turn ;
sc 2-tog over the 1st 2 sts, sc in the last 2 sts ;  Turn ;
sc 2-tog over the 1st 2 sts, sc in the last st ;  Turn ;
sc 2-tog over the 2 sts ; Turn
(and facing right side of work, we will work sl-st all the way down the side of the ear and move to the centre of the owl face.
Work  5 sl-st to reach the last row.)} ;
sc in the next 4 sts ;
(you are one st away from the centre of the nose) ;
sk the next st and work 5 dc in the next st ;
sk the next st around eye, and sc in the next st ;
ch 1, sk next st and sc in the next st ;  Turn
(we will now work on these 5 dc first and then continue around next eye) ;
2 dc in each dc till end ;
sk next sc and sc in the next sc
(you are facing the wrong side of work and have attached this fan bit to the right eye from the back) ;
Turn ;
Sl-st in all 10 dc ;
sl -st in the next sc (on 2nd eye) ;
(now we work on our 2nd ear)
Sc in the next 5 sts ; Turn.
sc 2-tog over the 1st 2 sts ; sc in the next 3 sts ,  Turn ;
sc in the 1st 2 st ; sc 2-tog over the last 2 sts ;  Turn ;
sc in the 1st st ; sc 2-tog over the last 2 sts ; Turn ;
sc 2-tog over the 2 sts ; Turn
(and facing right side of work, we will work sl-st all the way down the side of the ear and move to the side of the owl face.  Work 5 sl-st to reach the last row.)} ;
sc in each st till end.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Part 4 : Covering the ring or bangle
Using the same body color yarn, work one round of sc all around the ring, just like we did in yesterday’s creation.
To do this, you start with a slip knot around the ring and then work sc all around.

How do you work sc around the bangle / ring? Like you usually work an sc, but you work the hook around the bangle and then grab your yarn to work the sc.

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

Once we’ve worked the sc all around, we will work a leaf like stitch.
I have worked this only for the top half the round of your ring, as the towel comes in the lower half and all our work won’t show.
So here’s what I did : We need 5 sts per little leaf stitch – so I marked approximately how far I’d want to go (counting 5 sts per leaf) and placed a marker for my end stitch.
This just makes it easier to decide when to stop.
Of course, you could just start with the leaf pattern and decide as you go.
 We use a picot stitch here.

How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook).  For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).
In case this video does not come on, go to https://youtu.be/8s3zVaBcn4s

Leaf stitch :
sc in the 1st 2 sts ;
*{sc + ch 2 + 2 dc + picot + 2 ch + sl-st) all in the next st ;
sc in the next 2 sts* ;
rep *to* for as many leaves as you’d like.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Part 5 : Finishing and Putting it all together
Place the ring behind the owl head and neatly attach the head to the ring.
(I used an embroidery needle)
Attach a black bead or a ready made eye in the centre of your owl’s whites of  eyes.
Attach a yarn from the ring to the top for attachment to the ring on the wall – the holding yarn that will hold this creation onto the hook on your wall.

Please use the photograph as a guide.
Before you fasten off, please hold your creation up with the ring or centre of chain and see that it holds.

Secure your towel holder onto the wall and hang your towel through and smile.  This is a beautiful project – one that can not only be made in several colors, but using any yarn and any hook that’s suitable for that yarn.
