BABY’S BREATH DOILY

Doilies are such cute fun projects.  This set of doilies was a quick project for a friend’s daughter for Diwali.

Materials used : Today I’ve used some local Indian Red Heart / Coats Doli thread with a 1.75 mm crochet hook
For Indians : You could use Anchor or Red rose knitting cotton, 4-ply knitting cotton, unbranded knitting cotton as well

General yarn info : Today’s yarn is not specific for this pattern.  For this project, use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
As this is a lacy doily though, a lighter / thinner yarn will look better.  Do remember that the thinner the yarn, the smaller the project.

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Difficulty level : Easy to Intermediate

Finished size : About 5.5”

Stitches used : Using U.S terminology

Sloppy Slip knot : This is a neat new way to start your work without a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc :  https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook).  For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).
Here’s a great video https://youtu.be/8s3zVaBcn4s

Double crochet 2-tog : dc 2-tog :  [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;
{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 2 times.  One dc 2-tog made.
This video tutorial at https://youtu.be/1_oPlUfN5eg shows you how to use the dc 2-tog to decrease.
Sometimes we work the dc 2-tog in the same stitch, to use as a decorative stitch.

Instruction information
Please note that I start all my rounds with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for a video tutorials

I've been inspired by this chart below, but I tweaked and changed it a bit to suit my requirements.  Come, let's see how we make this doily

Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and work 6 hdc in that circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

How to seamlessly crochet in rounds :

In case the video tutorial does not open, go to https://youtu.be/ISBZK7Du7yE

Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;

yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8

Round 2 : 2 dc in the 1st hdc and in each hdc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

In the following round, we work a dc 3-tog.
Double crochet 3-tog : dc 3-tog :   Here is an easy video tutorial at https://youtu.be/qlnqXDB3OUM

Sweet Nothings Crochet free crochet pattern blog, free crochet pattern for the baby's breath doily, photo of the doily,

Round 3 : dc 3-tog in the 1st dc ;
(ch 1, dc 3-tog in the next dc) ;
rep (to) all around ;
ch 1 and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 4 : sl-st and 3 dc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
(ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp) ;
rep (to) all around ;
ch 1, and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 5 : sl-st and 3 dc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
(ch 2, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp) ;
rep (to) all around ;
ch 2, and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

I have changed the pattern a little bit from here on to get this little doily to the size and laciness I want.

Round 6 : sl-st into the 2nd dc , sc in the same 2nd dc ;
(5 dc in the next ch-2 sp ; sk next dc, sc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) all around ;
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 7 : sc in the 1st st ;
(ch 5, sk next 2 dc, sc in the next dc ;
ch 5, sc in the next sc) ;
rep (to) all around ;
ch 2 + dc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
You are now in the centre of that last ch-5 sp

Round 8 : sc in the 1st st ;
(ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp) ;
rep (to) all around ;
ch 2 + dc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Now here’s where it gets fun.  You can work Round 8 once or twice to increase the size of your doily.

In our last round, we will work a picot stitch.

In case the video does. not come on, please go to https://youtu.be/8s3zVaBcn4s

Last Round : sc + picot in the 1st st ;
(ch 5, sc + picot in the next ch-5 sp) ;
rep (to) all around ;
ch 2 + dc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
Block as per yarn instructions.
