N IS FOR ….

And today let’s work on our N is for…
We’ve got a pair of nests (one with eggs and one with baby chicks) ; nectarine and a (butterfly) net as our cute little motifs for N.  Come along, let’s see what we can do with this set.

Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Materials used : Today I’ve used our lovely Oswal 4-ply acrylic yarn with a 3.5 mm crochet hook
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic or  unbranded  knitting cotton as well as Vardhaman acrylic yarns

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Stitches used :
Starting slip knot : Here’s how you start with a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/lJcqsVcs8cw

Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : This is a neat new way to start your work without a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs

Abbreviations used :
sc : single crochet             dc : Double crochet
ch : chain                           ch-sp : chain space
sp : space                          rep : Repeat
hk : hook                            lp (s) : loop(s)
yo : yarn over                     sl-st : slip stitch

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.  For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

Optional finish : You can either finish off after Row 3, or work a reverse single crochet / crab stitch all around.

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : To refresh your skill on the fsc, please view this video https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

Start Row 1 : with a 8 fsc.  Turn.
In case you are starting with ch, work 9 ch,
and work the 1st sc in the 2nd ch from hk.
Work a sc in each ch till end.  Turn.

Row 2 : 2 hdc in the 1st fsc ;
hdc in the next 6 fsc ; 2 hdc in the last fsc.  Turn.

Rows 3 - 5 : 2 hdc in the 1st hdc ;
hdc in the next each hdc till the last hdc  ; 2 hdc in the last hdc.  Turn.

In our last round, let’s clean up our edges by running a round of sc all around.  Remember to work 1 sc in each horizontal bar of the hdc along the sides.  It does not matter how many stitches you work along the sides – just ensure it does not pucker and that you work the same number of stitches on both sides.

Round 6 : sc in each st all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Fasten off and leave a tail to attach motif onto blanket.

Baby bird :
Half the fun in creating something is to work with different colours – so figure out your colours.  Take one colour for the baby bird (we’re only working baby bird heads) and one colour for the beak.

Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and 12 hdc in it.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st hdc.

Fasten off yarn and add yarn for beak.

ch 4 ; sl-st in the same st you started from ;
ch 4, sl-st in the same st again.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Using an embroidery needle and a black thread, embroider an eye for your bird.

You have a tiny little birdie baby with a mouth open, ready to be fed
Make as many baby birds as you want.

Mummy bird :
Once again .. have fun in colour choice.

Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and 12 hdc in it.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st hdc.

In the following round, we will work the head as well as tail feathers in one continuous movement.  We will then work in the tiny little beak.
Round 2 : ch 2, 6 hdc in the next st ;
ch 2, and sl-st in the next 7 sts ;
ch 2 + dc + ch 2 all in the next st.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

For beak : Attach yarn in the point between head and body (base of the 2nd set of ch-2) : ch 4, sl-st into the same st you started from.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Using an embroidery needle and thread, work in an eye using black yarn.

3)    N is for NET

We will attach the handle to the 1st round of the net.
