BOMB,
THE BLACK ANGRY BIRD GRANNY SQUARE
IN
THE ROUND - 26
If
you have been following my blogs, you’ll know that we’re creating some really
cute 9” x 9” squares for Project Chemo Crochet. The charity will put these squares together to make blankets for toddler battling cancer. Do read all about this wonderful charity and their work on their Facebook page or website.
In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”. Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

I
however found that for my requirement for Project Chemo Cancer (which is for 9”
x 9” squares), I needed some tweaks.
I have used the general idea from Ashleigh's pattern above – the centre that you start
with will be the face colour of the animal/character you are working on.
Once
you are done with Rounds 1 – 5 for the 'face' of the character, you will start creating the border granny square,
still working in rounds. Keeping this in
mind, here are my tweaks.
I’d
recently made a set of angry bird new born baby caps and I’m working off those
ideas to get these cute squares done .. ‘these’ as I hope to make the whole set
of angry bird squares.. so keep an eye out for this blog, won’t you?
If you want to make just a black angry bird motif, then work till Round 4 or 5 (depending on how large you want your motif) and then work in the face features.
To make a blanket, you will work as many squares as you'd need for the length and breadth of your project, and then using one of the many joining techniques given at the top of this blog, join up to create your own unique individual creation.
There are some more angry birds in this series - so keep an eye out. There are also quite a few links at the bottom of this blog - so go through them all and have a fun crafting day.
Tweaks that I’ve done for Bomb, my black angry bird square here :
1.
I
started with a centre (face colour which is black for Bomb, our angry bird)
circle and then worked the off- white as my border.
2.
I
worked the first four rounds per pattern – so 60 sts in dc as instructed.
3.
We
now work the ch-sps round in off-white or white. When working for the off-white
square, work as instructed in the original pattern. You need a total of 12 ch-5 sps all around.
4. I worked 5
dc in each ch-5 sp of Round 2 of the granny squares (in white) ; and (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) for each corner ch-5
sp.
5.
I
then worked 1 dc in each dc, and then the (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) in each corner
ch-3 sp. I just continued till I had a 9” x
9” square. Easy enough, right?
Once
the basic square is done with white (off white or whatever colour you want for
the border of your red angry bird), we need to add in Bomb, the angry black
bird’s specific features.
For Bomb's eyes : Make two
Round 1 :
(Using black) : Start with a magic circle and 10 hdc in that circle.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (10)
Fasten
off black yarn. Attach white yarn.
Round 2 :
(Using white) : 2 hdc in the 1st hdc and in each dc all around.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (20)
Fasten
off and leave a long tail for attachment.
Attach grey
Round 3 :
(Using grey) : sl-st in each st all around.
Alternatively,
work both rounds in white and then use a 0.75 cm black button for the centre of
the eye.
For Bomb's eyebrows : (Using orange)
I
worked two fdc chains of 7 sts. In case
you work a regular chain, then work 9 and work your 1st dc in the 2nd
st from hk, and dc in each ch till end.
For Bomb's beak : (Using
orange)
Round 1 :
Start with a magic circle and 9 hdc in that circle.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (9)
Round 2 :
sc in the 1st 2 hdc ; 4 hdc in the next st ;
*sc
in the next 2 sts ; 4 hdc in the next st* ;
rep
*to* once more.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st.
OR
work in your beak using a tapestry / embroidery needle. Work in a triangle in
orange and then filled it in with a few straight stitches.
For Bomb's top of the head feather :
Start Row 1 : (Using black) : with 4 fsc. Turn.
Row 2 :
(Using black) : sc in all 4 fsc. Turn.
Row 3 :
(Using black) : sc in all 4 sc. Turn.
Fasten
off black and leave a tail for attachment.
Attach
orange.
Row 4 :
(Using orange) : sc in all 4 sc.
Fasten
off orange and weave in ends.
Attach
the feather to the top of your square.
And
that’s our Bomb, the angry black bird granny square in a round .. done!
Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.
Invisible join : Here’s a quick tutorial on how to join using the embroidery needle and whipstitch to get an invisible join at https://youtu.be/a6XZQ6VzJFM
