COOKIE MONSTER - SESAME
STREET GRANNY SQUARE
IN
THE ROUND – 19
If
you have been following my blogs, you’ll know that we’re creating some really
cute 9” x 9” squares for toddler blankets for Project Chemo Crochet. Do read all about them on their Facebook page
or website. See how you can contribute /
donate to this fantastic charity. https://www.facebook.com/projectchemocrochet/

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.
All my blogs can be printed. Find the printer friendly (green) link at the bottom of this blog. You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.
Remember that you only print if absolutely essential. Save paper – Save Our Earth.
Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation.
Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me. Cheers.
Working
with these same inspirations, here are my original granny squares for this series.
Thanks
for coming along and spreading smiles.
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
For this project (squares for Project Chemo Crochet), the squares need to be 9” x 9” squares.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Instructions using U.S terminology
I
however found that for my requirement for Project Chemo Cancer (which is for 9”
x 9” squares), I needed some tweaks. So
here are my notes.
I
have used the general idea from Ashleigh – the centre that you start with will
be the face colour of the character you are working on. So yellow for Big bird & Ernie, red for
Elmo, orange for Bert and blue for cookie monster.
Once
you are done with Rounds 1 – 5 for the face of our Sesame street character, you
will start creating the border granny square, still working in rounds but
working with either off white or white for the border. These rounds need to be in another colour to
accent the character you have worked on in the middle.
If
you decide on making just a Cookie Monster motif, then just work the first five
rounds in blue per pattern and then go straight on to make the face features
and cookie.
If
you want to make this into a Sesame street blanket, then make this square and
check the earlier blogs to see the characters you have missed out on. Make as many squares as you want for the
blanket / afghan and the use one of the joining techniques given above to put
it all together. Have fun.. Spread
smiles.
Tweaks that I’ve done for our Cookie Monster face :
I
started with a centre (blue for cookie monster) circle and then worked the off-
white as my border.
1.
I
worked the first four rounds per pattern – so 60 sts in dc as instructed.
2.
I
then worked a round of hdc, mainly to ensure that I get my granny square a
little large faster
3.
We
now work the ch-sps round in off-white or white. When working for the off-white
border square, work as instructed in the original pattern. You need a total of 12 ch-5 sps all around.
4. I worked 5
dc in each ch-5 sp of Round 2 of the granny squares (in white) ; and (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) for each corner ch-5
sp.
5.
I
then worked 1 dc in each dc, and then the (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) in each corner
ch-3 sp. I just continued till I had a 9” x
9” square. Easy enough, right?
Once
the basic square is done, we need to add in the special facial features.
For Cookie Monster’s eyes : Make two
Round 1 :
(Using black) : Start with a magic circle and 10 hdc in that circle.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (10)
Round 2 :
(Using white) : 2 dc in the 1st hdc and in each st all around.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (20).
Fasten
off and leave a long tail for attachment.
Note
:
You could work both rounds in white and then attach a button for the eyes as
well
For Cookie Monster’s mouth : Using black
Start
with a magic circle and 9 dc in that circle.
Turn.
DO
NOT join.
Row 1 :
dc in the 1st dc ;
(2
dc in the next dc ; dc in the next dc) ;
rep
(to) till end. Turn.
Fasten
off and leave a tail for attachment.
For the cookie : Using brown
Start
with a magic circle and 10 dc in that circle.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 1 :
2 dc in the 1st dc ; and in each dc all around
Fasten
off and leave a tail for attachment.
Use
darker brown and embroider in small chocolate chips (I used French knots)
Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.
