ORANGE
ANGRY BIRD GRANNY SQUARE
IN
THE ROUND - 14
If
you have been following my blogs, you’ll know that we’re creating some really
cute 9” x 9” squares for toddler blankets.
These squares are headed to Project Chemo Crochet. The volunteers at PCC will join these square
sent to them into blankets for patients fighting the Big C. This set of squares that I am sending are all
for toddlers – all patterns that young kids will love.
If
you have been inspired and would like to donate as well, do find out about PCC
via their Facebook page, or Google their webpage.
In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”. Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.
All my blogs can be printed. Find the printer friendly (green) link on the right hand side and at the bottom of this blog. You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.
Remember that you only print if absolutely essential. Save paper – Save Our Earth.
Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation.
Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.
To purchase this or similar yarn online, click here to buy your yarns online via Amazon. While you will still pay the same, I may get paid by Amazon as well.
This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me. Cheers.
Thanks
for coming along and spreading smiles.
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
For this project (squares for Project Chemo Crochet), the squares need to be 9” x 9” squares.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Instructions using U.S terminology
I
however found that for my requirement for Project Chemo Cancer (which is for 9”
x 9” squares), I needed some tweaks.
So
here are the basic ideas of what I’ve done.
I have used the general idea from Ashleigh – the centre that you start
with will be the face colour of the animal /character you are working on.
Once
you are done with Rounds 1 – 5 (to create the face of the animal / character),
you will start creating the (border) granny square, still working in
rounds. Keeping this in mind, here are
my tweaks.
I’d
recently made a set of angry bird new born baby caps and I’m working off those
ideas to get these cute squares done .. ‘these’ as I hope to make quite a few
of the angry birds as granny mitered squares.. so keep an eye out for this
blog, won’t you?
If
you decide just to make Bubbles the orange angry bird as a motif, then you will
just work Rounds 1 – 5 in orange and then go straight to the face features,
without working the border (white portion) of our granny mitered square.
Please read
through all my notes first before you pick up your hook, so you can visualize what
I have done. Cheers and happy crafting.
Tweaks that I’ve done for my Orange angry bird square here :
1.
I
started with a centre (face colour which is orange for Bubbles, the orange
angry bird) circle and then worked the off- white as my border.
2.
I
worked the first four rounds per pattern – so 60 sts in dc as
instructed.
3.
Round
5 : I then worked a round of hdc, mainly to ensure that I get my granny square
a little large faster J
4. We now work
the ch-sps round in white (or whatever color you choose for your border). When
working for the border square, work as instructed in the original pattern. You need a total of 12 ch-5 sps all around.
5.
I
worked 5 dc in each ch-5 sp of Round 2 for the ‘border’ of the granny squares (instead
of 4 as instructed by the designer) ;
and (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) for each corner ch-5 sp.
6. I then
worked 1 dc in each dc, and then the (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) in each corner ch-3
sp. I just continued till I had a 9” x
9” square. Easy enough, right?
Unlike
the earlier red and blue angry birds, I decided to work the feathers
later. There are two sets of feathers –
one in orange and one in black. So I am
going to work them and attach them on later.
Please
check out my Orange Angry Bird cap at the link at the top of this blog for
ideas and inspiration too.
Once
the basic square is done with white (off white or whatever colour you want for
the border of your red angry bird), we need to add in the features.
For the head feathers :
We
need two sets of head feathers for Bubbles – one each in orange and black.
Using Orange
Start :
with 5 fsc. Turn ;
ch
1, and sl-st in the 1st fsc ; sc in the next fsc ; hdc in the last 3
fsc (first orange feather done) ;
ch
7 ; Turn ; and sl-st in the 1st ch from hk ; hdc in the next ch ; dc
in the remaining ch (second orange feather done).
Fasten
off and leave a tail for attachment.
For the head feathers : Using
Black
Start :
with 6 fsc. Turn ;
ch
1, and sl-st in the 1st fsc ; sc in the next fsc ; hdc in the last 4
fsc (first black feather done) ;
ch
8 ; Turn ; and sl-st in the 1st ch from hk ; hdc in the next ch ; dc
in the remaining ch (second black feather done).
Fasten
off and leave a tail for attachment.
To attach : Place the orange feathers on top of the black
feathers and sew them together first.
Then place these feathers on top of the circle, right in the middle of
the eyes. (Check my project for placement – it’s easy)
For the eyes : Make two
Round 1 :
(Using white) : Start with a magic circle and 10 hdc in that circle.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (10)
Round 2 :
(Using white) : 2 dc in the 1st hdc and in each sc all around.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (20)
Fasten
off and leave a long tail for attachment.
Attach
black.
We
will work half a row in sl-st to give a black outline for our orange angry
bird.
Row 3 :
(Using black) : sl-st in the 1st dc and in the next 14 sts.
Fasten
off black and weave in ends.
I
have then used a 0.75 cm black button for the centre of the eye.
In
case you want to crochet the black of the eye, then work a magic circle with 8
hdc in it. Join with a sl-st to the 1st
st. Pull together and fasten off leaving
a tail for attachment.
For
the beak, I’ve used the same pattern as I have for the Blues angry bird.
For the beak : You can either use a tapestry /
embroidery needle, and work a small triangle in yellow and then fill it in with
a few straight stitches. OR
You
can make it a 3D one as I have
Round 1 :
(with yellow) : Start and a magic circle.
Work 3 sc in that circle.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (3)
Round 2 :
2 sc in all 3 sc. Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (6)
Round 3 :
2 sc in the 1st sc ; sc in the next sc ;
(2
sc in the next sc ; sc in the next sc) ;
rep
(to) once.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (9)
Round 4 :
2 sc in the 1st sc ; sc in the next 2 sc ;
(2
sc in the next sc ; sc in the next 2 sc) ;
rep
(to) once.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (12)
Round 5 :
sc in the 1st sc ; and in each sc all around.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (12)
Fasten
off and leave a long tail for attachment.
You
could stuff the beak with a little poly-fill. I have opted not to do so.
Attach
the cute little beak in between the eyes.
And
that’s Bubbles, our angry orange bird granny square in a round .. done!
and as before how do you make this into a blanket ? Just make as many squares as you'd like for the size you want your afghan / blanket. Then using one of the joining techniques given above, create your own unique blanket. Do take a look at the many many many patterns on the links below to be inspired. Cheers.
If you're visiting me here for the first time, and have liked the experience, do add me to your mailing list (for your convenience) , and all my future free patterns will come straight to your mail box.
I’d appreciate if you could credit my blog (and link the original pattern link) when you make your own creation. Thanks.
Have a great day and see you soon. ☺
Here are some of my older creations.
