This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me. Cheers.
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
For this project (squares for Project Chemo Crochet), the squares need to be 9” x 9” squares.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Instructions using U.S terminology
I
however found that for my requirement for Project Chemo Cancer (which is for 9”
x 9” squares), I needed some tweaks.
So
here are the basic ideas of what I’ve done.
I have used the general idea from Ashleigh – the centre that you start
with will be the face colour of the animal you are working on.
Once
you are done with Rounds 1 – 5, you will start creating the granny square,
still working in rounds. Keeping this in
mind, here are my tweaks.
I’d
recently made a set of angry bird new born baby caps and I’m working off those
ideas to get these cute granny squares done .. and
I hope to make quite a few angry bird granny squares.. so keep an eye
out for this blog, won’t you?
If
you decide to make just an angry red bird motif, stop after you finish the
rounds that make his red ‘face’, and then return here to make the face
features.
Tweaks that I’ve done for my angry bird mitered granny square here :
1.
I
started with a centre (face colour which is red for Terence our angry bird)
circle and then worked the off- white as my border.
2.
I
worked the first four rounds per pattern – so 60 sts in dc as instructed.
3.
Round 5 : Feather round (still using red) : I worked in
hdc and then made the two little feathers on top of the head. So we will work
two chains, one each for a feather – and we will create the feather by working
up and down the chain and then attaching it to the main circle. So here’s what
I did work 28 hdc ; sc in the next st ; (Feather 1) : ch 4, sc in the 2nd
ch from hk ; hdc in the next ch ; 2 dc in the last ch ; sl-st in the next st
(of the main circle) ; (Feather 2) : ch 5, sc in the 2nd ch
from hk ; hdc in the next ch ; dc in the next ch ; 2 dc in the last ch ; sl-st
in the next st (of the main circle) – two head feathers done ; sc in the next
st ; hdc in the remaining sts till end and join with a sl-st to the 1st
st.
4. We now work
the ch-sps round in off-white or white. When working for the off-white square,
work as instructed in the original pattern.
You need a total of 12 ch-5 sps all around.
5.
I
worked 5 dc in each ch-5 sp of Round 2 of the granny squares (in white) ; and (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) for each corner ch-5
sp.
6. I then
worked 1 dc in each dc, and then the (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) in each corner ch-3
sp. I just continued till I had a 9” x
9” square. Easy enough, right?
So
you may wonder why I have not indicated where to work which stitch in the ch-5
sps. It does not matter. What is the
‘worst’ that will happen – your little angry bird will be a little side-ways or
slightly cock-eyed in placement.. but he’ll look so cute anyway.. so don’t
break your head too much about where the corners come, when working the square.
Ideally, if you manage to get two sets of
5-dc bits right between the feathers, and the two corner spaces to either side,
then yaay.. but don’t fret about it.
Once
the full square is done with red and white (or off white or whatever colour you want for
the border of your red angry bird), we need to add in the features.
For the eyes : Make two
Round 1 :
(Using black) : Start with a magic circle and 10 dc in that circle.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (10)
Fasten
off black yarn. Attach white yarn.
Round 2 :
(Using white) : 2 dc in the 1st dc and in each dc all around.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (20)
Fasten
off and leave a long tail for attachment.
Alternatively,
work both rounds 1 & 2 in white and then use a 0.75 cm black button for the centre of
the eye.
For the eyebrows : (Using black) : I worked two fdc chains of 7
sts. In case you work a regular chain,
then work 9 and work your 1st dc in the 2nd st from hk,
and dc in each ch till end. (Check the top of this blog for a 'how to' work a fdc)
For the beak : Using a
tapestry / embroidery needle, I worked in a small triangle in orange and then filled
it in with a few straight embroidery stitches.
Finishing :
Place and pin the eyes on the face first, keeping them close together.
Then place and pin the eyebrows down.
Do not attach till you have placed the eyes
and eyebrows down and once you think it looks right, using a tapestry / embroidery
needle, fasten these features down neatly.
The
beak is sewn in just below and between the eyes.
And
that’s our angry red bird granny square in a round .. done!
How do I make this into a blanket ? There are a
few more angry birds coming in this series, so if you want to add in more angry
bird blanket, hold on ;)
But
basically, you just make several similar sized squares and then using one of
the joining techniques given above, join them up together. Check my extensive list of squares already
made – and many of them are 9” x 9” (for Project Chemo Crochet made in 2015).
