EGGS
SUNNY SIDE UP GRANNY SQUARE
FOOD
SERIES - IN THE ROUND - 32
And
Sweet Nothings Crochet is back with the second in the food series of ‘in the
round’ granny squares!
If
you have been following my blogs, you’ll know that we’re creating some really
cute 9” x 9” squares for the Project Chemo Crochet charity. These squares will be joined together to
create blankets for toddler battling cancer. Read all about this charity and the wonderful
work they are doing on their Facebook page or website.
In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”. Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.
All my blogs can be printed. Find the printer friendly (green) link at the bottom of this blog. You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.
Remember that you only print if absolutely essential. Save paper – Save Our Earth.
Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation.
Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.
To purchase this or similar yarn online, click here to buy your yarns online via Amazon. While you will still pay the same, I may get paid by Amazon as well.
This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me. Cheers.
Thanks
for coming along and spreading smiles.
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.
Abbreviations used :
sc
: single crochet dc : Double crochet
ch
: chain ch-sp
: chain space
sp
: space rep
: Repeat
trc
: Treble / triple crochet
dtrc
: Double triple crochet
Stitches used : (Using US terminology)
Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.
Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for free video tutorials of all the stitches used in this pattern.
Thank
you Rhonda, for this wonderful pattern.
There
are several ideas on what you can do for a sunny side up mitered granny square.
Please read through all these notes
before picking up your hook.
What I did with this pattern
1.
Work
Rounds 1 & 2 in sunshine yellow to make the yellow that is the yellow of
egg.
2.
I
then changed to off-white / white, which is the white of the egg.
3.
Once
you decide you have a large enough egg white round, change colour to whatever
color you want for the “plate” or border.
4. You can
decide to have the plate in one colour, and then do the final pattern (for
making the circle into a square) in another colour – all your creativity comes
alive now.
5.
Once
we complete the egg white in a round, we will add a little scalloped edging to
give a frilly outer shaping for the egg.
6. For the
edging, we will work post stitches around Round 4. So work (sc ; hdc ; 2 dc ; 2
dc ; hdc ; sc) over the next 6 sts ; and work [sc ; sc ; hdc ; hdc ; sc ; sc]
over the next 6 sts ; *rep (to) followed by [to] over the next 12 sts* ; and
rep *to* till end. This completes the
scalloped edging.
7.
Now
attach whatever colour you want for your plate (I’ve chosen purple) and work
the next 2 rounds using that colour. As
we’ve worked using post stitches, you have the tops of the dc all free for you
to use for the purple plate colour.
8.
Once
you’ve completed that, we will make this into a square – and once again, please
follow directions given by the lovely Rhonda for the puppy afghan.
9. If you want
to have a-2-egg sunny side up square :
Work just the white of the egg to start – so start with white and not
yellow, and work as much as you want the white of the egg to cover your ‘plate’. Work the frilly outer edge of the egg and
then work your plate till end. Then
using yellow, work Round 1 as given in the pattern, and then work Round 2 in
all sc. Fasten off leaving a long
tail for attachment. Make two yolks. Now
attach these yolks onto the top of your egg white on that plate and voila! You have
a cool double eggs sunny side up square!
If
you decide to add the bacon rasher, here’s what I did
Bacon rasher
Start
(using maroon) with 25 fsc.
Turn and attach on off white yarn, but do not cut
off maroon yarn.
Row 1 :
(using off-white) :
sc in the 1st fsc ;
(3 sc in the next fsc ; sc
in the next 2 fsc) ;
rep (to) till end. Turn.
Fasten off off white yarn and
re-attach the maroon yarn.
Row 2 :
(using maroon) :
sc in the 1st sc and in each sc till end.
Fasten off maroon and leave a tail to attach.
Attach
the rasher to one side of your sunny side up egg and you’ve got a lovely
brekkie square all done.
Needless
to say, you can make another one and have a double sunny side egg with two
rashers for a full(er) brekkie ;)
I
hope you enjoyed making this exquisite brekkie granny square and I hope that
the little toddler that receives this square gets a cute blanket too.
Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.
Invisible join : Here’s a quick tutorial on how to join using the embroidery needle and whipstitch to get an invisible join at https://youtu.be/a6XZQ6VzJFM
