TWEETY
BIRD GRANNY SQUARE
IN
THE ROUND - 27
If
you have been following my blogs, you’ll know that we’re creating some really
cute 9” x 9” squares for Project Chemo Crochet.
This charity is making blankets for toddler battling cancer. All you need to do is send them knitted or
crocheted squares (9” x 9” each square) and they’ll put it together to make the
blankets. Each square helps spread a
smile. Come along - read about this
charity on their Facebook page or website and see how you can help.
In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”. Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.
All my blogs can be printed. Find the printer friendly (green) link at the bottom of this blog. You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.
Remember that you only print if absolutely essential. Save paper – Save Our Earth.
Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation.
Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me. Cheers.
Thanks

So
here are the basic ideas of what I’ve done.
The
centre that you start with will be the face colour of the animal you are
working on – so yellow today for Tweety bird.
Once
you are done with Rounds 1 – 5 for Tweety’s face, you will start creating the border
granny square, still working in rounds.
Tweaks that I’ve done for my Tweety bird granny square here :
1.
I
started with a centre (face colour which is yellow for Tweety) circle and then
worked the off- white as my border.
2.
I
worked the first four rounds per pattern – so 60 sts in dc as instructed.
3.
We
now work the ch-sps round in off-white or white. When working for the off-white
square, work as instructed in the original pattern. You need a total of 12 ch-5 sps all around.
4. I worked 5
dc in each ch-5 sp of Round 2 of the granny squares (in white) ; and (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) for each corner ch-5
sp.
5.
I
then worked 1 dc in each dc, and then the (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) in each corner
ch-3 sp. I just continued till I had a 9” x
9” square. Easy enough, right?
Once
the basic square is done with white (off white or whatever colour you want for
the border of your red angry bird), we need to add in Tweety bird’s specific
features.
For the eyes : Make two
Start Row 1 : (Using black) : Start with 5 fsc. Turn.
Fasten
off black. Attach blue.
In
the following row / round, we will work along one side of the fsc and then spin
around the last st and work along the under of the same fsc chain.
Round 2 :
(Using blue) : sc in the 1st 2 fsc ; hdc in the next 2 fsc ; 3 dc in
the last fsc (and working around the bottom of the same fsc ch) ; hdc in the
next 2 fsc ; sc in the last fsc. Turn.
Fasten
off black. Attach white.
Round 3 :
(Using white) : sc in the 1st st ; 2 sc in the next st ; hdc in the
next 3 sts ; 3 dc in the next st ; hdc in the next 3 sts ; 2 sc in the next st
; sc in the last st.
Fasten
off and leave a tail for attachment.
For Tweety’s little hairy fluff : (Using yellow)
I
just cut three lengths of about 2” yarn ; folded in half and wove it into the
top centre of the circle. I then teased
the yarn and separated the ply to give the hair a soft fuzzy look.
For the eye lashes : (Using black)
Using
an embroidery / tapestry needle, embroider in some long lashes for Tweety bird.
For the beak : (Using orange)
Row 1 :
Start with a magic circle and 6 hdc in that circle. Turn.
Do
not join. (6)
Now
we need to work two tiny ‘extensions’ on either side of Tweety’s beak.
Row 2 :
ch 3, sc in the 2nd ch from
hk ; sc in the next ch ; (Now work in the 6 hdc from Row 1) ; sc in the next 4 sts
; ch 3, sc in the 2nd ch from hk ; sc in the next ch.
Fasten
off and leave a tail for attachment.
OR
work in your beak using a tapestry / embroidery needle. Work in a triangle in
orange and then filled it in with a few straight stitches.
And
that’s our Tweety bird granny square in a round .. done!
Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.
