Here’s a bunny rabbit using a granny square pattern.  There are two patterns on this link.. http://homemadeatmyplace.blogspot.com/2017/03/make-it-granny-bunny.html

3)    B is for BIRD
I’ve made two birds.  This is the first one.

For this we will start with a row of stitches, and then work around that row to make the body.  The head will then be worked at one side, and the tail off the other side.  You could start with regular chain, but I always prefer the flatter and neater fsc chain.  The fsc chain also allows you to access the stitch from the ‘other side” or underside much more efficiently.  Check the top of this blog for a how to.

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : To refresh your skill on the fsc, please view this video https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Start Row / Round 1 : with a 5 fsc.  Turn.
sc in the 1st fsc ; hdc in the next fsc ;
dc in the next 2 fsc ; 4 dc in the last fsc (turn and working from under the fsc chain) ;
dc in the next 2 fsc ; hdc in the next fsc ;
sc in the last fsc and join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
You will now have an oval base made for the bird stomach.

Round 2 : 2 dc in the 1st st and in each st all around till end.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

We will now work on the tail feathers.
Row 3 : sl-st into the next st ;
2 dc in the same st ; 2 dc in the next st.  Turn.

As we’re still working on the tail, I’m going to call them all Row 3 and add alphabets – so we don’t get confused with the head and beak bit.

Row 3A : dc in all 4 sts.  Turn.

Row 3B : hdc in all 4 sts.
The tail is complete.
Here you can do two things.
a)   You can fasten off and weave in ends ; OR
b)   You can sl-st down the side of the tail and sl-st all the way to where we will start working on the head.
Either way, we will start on the beak and I’ll indicate which stitch you need to be at.

You are now working on the right hand side of your work and your tail feathers are on your right side.
We will work on the bird face on the left hand side  - so keeping your tail to the right, the bird’s head faces left.  Got it?

So count off and get to the 5th st from the tail.  So you will either join a new yarn on the 5th st from tail OR sl-st into the next 75sts.

We will now work on the head and beak of our bird.

Double crochet 2-tog : dc 2-tog :  [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;
{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 2 times.  One dc 2-tog made.
This video tutorial at https://youtu.be/1_oPlUfN5eg shows you how to use the dc 2-tog to decrease.
Sometimes we work the dc 2-tog in the same stitch, to use as a decorative stitch. Visit this video tutorial at https://youtu.be/lLUXOJ1sY9w

Row 4 : skipping the next 2 sts, work 10 dc into the next st ;
sk the next 2 sts and sl-st into the next st.  Turn
(head made)
We will continue to make the beak.
Sl-st into the next 2 sts ; dc 2-tog over the next 2 sts.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

4)    B is for BIRD 2
This is the second bird.

For this we will start with a magic circle which will be the middle of the back of our bird.  We will work the belly /body of the bird as well as the back + tail of the bird off these sts.  Finally we will add in the head at the opposite end (from tail)

Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro

What is a slip stitch : Here is a neat video tutorial at https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Start Row 1 : with a magic circle and work 6 dc in it.
Pull lightly to close, but do not join.
Leave it like a semi circle.  Turn.

Row 2 : 2 dc in 1st dc and in each dc till end.  Turn.

Row 3 : dc in 1st dc ;
(2 dc in the next dc ; dc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) till end ;
ch 8.  Turn.

You are at one end of your semi circle.  We will work the tail off this end.

To start the tail, we will work a few chain, and then turn and work back these chain as well as the flat part of the semi circle.
Now the thumb rule is to always work 2 dc on the side / horizontal “sleeping/lying down” part of every dc, so all I will give you are the number of sts needed till end – and you just work them evenly.

Row 4 : sl-st in 2nd st from hk ;
sc in the next st ; hdc in the next 2 sts ; dc in the next 3 sts ;
(now working along the flat part of the semi circle) ; work 11 dc till end ;
(we are at the opposite end from the tail, and we will continue now to make the head in that last st.  We will also work a ch-3 picot, which is ch 3, sl-st in the 3rd ch from hk.  Check the top of this blog for a “how to picot”)
[8 trc in the same last st ; 1 trc + picot in the same last st ; 1 trc ; 2 dc ; 1 hdc in the same last st] ; sl-st into the top of the 1st st from Round 3 to join head to body.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing for both birds :
If you decide to add in an eye, work one with an embroidery needle and a French knot in the centre of the head – or add in a small bead or googly eye.. whichever is easiest and cutest.  Remember when adding a bead or googly eye to fasten it down securely so the child cannot get it off and into their mouth!

And we can’t have birds without a bird cage ;)
