1st VOWEL of the HINDI ALPHABET

1st VOWEL of the HINDI ALPHABET - a free crochet pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet
I have been mulling with the idea of working on a set of Hindi alphabets in Devnagari script, and I guess ‘this is the time’ or to say that in Hindi “apna time aa gaya”.  Let’s start with the vowels.

If you have been following my blogs you’ll know that I worked on several sets of the alphabet – both upper and lower case from Tamara of Moogly blog.  Thanks Tamara not just for all your wonderful freebies, but also for your encouragement that got me started on this road.  Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.

All my blogs can be printed.  Find the printer friendly (green) link on the right side of this blog.  You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.

Remember that you only print if absolutely essential.  Save paper – Save Our Earth.

Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation.

Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.

To purchase this or similar yarn online, click the highlighted links below to buy your yarns online via Amazon.  While you will still pay the same, I may get paid by Amazon as well.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers

Instruction information
The alphabet all done
Please note that I start all rows with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please also check the top of this blog for neat video tutorials of all stitches used in today’s pattern sheet. Video links for stitches are also given through the pattern sheet for your convenience.

PART 1 :
We start with the first (number 3-like) part of the vowel.
Foundation Single Crochet : fsc :  https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA
Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k
First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

Start : with 3 fsc.  Turn.

Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;

yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8
Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo
Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc. https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Row 1 : sc in the 1st st ; hdc in the next st ; dc in the last st.  Turn.

Row 2 : dc in the 1st st ; hdc in the next st ; sc in the last st.  Turn.

Rows 3 - 8 : Rep Rows 1 & 2

Row 9 : sc in all 3 sts.  Turn.

In the following row we will work along the edge of Rows 7 and 6 and then work on the lower half of the alphabet.
Remember that the 1st st at the corner is a sc.  We skip that st and work in the 1st dc.

Row 10 : ch 1, Work 2 sl-st along the side / post of the 1st dc ;
1 sc and 1 hdc along the post of the next dc ;
1 dc along the post of the next dc Turn.

Row 11 : dc in the 1st st ; hdc in the next st ; sc in the last st.  Turn.

Row 12 : sc in the 1st st ; hdc in the next st ; dc in the last st.  Turn.

Rows 13 - 17 : Rep Rows 1 & 2

Row 18 : sc in all 3 sts.  Turn.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

PART 2 :
Here we will work on the "A" matra

Start : with 12 fsc.  Turn.

Row 2 : sc in the 1st st and in each st till end.  Turn.

Row 3 : sc in all 12 sts ; ch 6.  Turn.

Row 4 : sc in the 2nd ch from hk ; sc in the next 4 ch ;
sc in the next 3 sts ; 3 fsc.  Turn.

Rows  5 - 6 : sc in all 11 sts.  Turn.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

PART 3 :
Now in Part 2 we have worked the “A” matra.
This has a short side and a long side on top, right? You need to work on the 5th, 6th and 7th st (of your 12 fsc row from Part 2) on the same side as the short side.  - so keeping your work such that the  12 fsc row is horizontal and the short side is facing upwards, count off the stitches as given.

Row 1 : Re-attach yarn on the 5th st from top ; sc in that st and the next 2 sts.  Turn.

Rows 2 - 3 : sc in all 3 sts.  Turn.

FINISHING :
a)   We need to join the “A” ka matra to the first section.  So using a set of pins, first join the matra to the centre of what you made in Part 1.
b)   Then using one of the joining methods, join these two together.
You have completed A.

Block as needed per yarn instructions.

If you wish to stiffen your project, use Mod Podge in the proportion of 1 : 3 water.
I usually allow my project to dry completely and then apply a second coat.
For Indians : You can use Fevicol MR or Fevicryl Fabric glue in the same proportions.
