Let’s see how we can make this beautiful Argyle pattern today, shall we?

The beauty of this pattern is that it is magical.. literally.
The yarn weaves itself into this pattern with just a few calculations by you.

The yarn used is kind-of specific.
1)      The yarn needs to be multi coloured – but the number of color changes do not matter
2)    The length of each color change should be between 4” – 12”.  While it does not matter if the color lengths for each individual color vary, they need to fall within this range.
3)    It does not matter what kind of material the yarn is made of – i.e. wool, acrylic or cotton and you just need to use a crochet hook that is suitable for your yarn.

The actual process is pretty easy.
1)      Unravel your yarn and see the color changes (obviously you should check that the length of the color changes fall in the range given. So say you have four colors red, blue, green and yellow.  It does not matter if red is 12”, blue is 4”, green is 6” and yellow is 5”.  It’s just that all the red will be 12” through the skein and it will work.

2)    You have your unraveled yarn and you have seen the color change.  Start at any one color – say red and then work chains all through the red, blue, green and yellow – all the way till you come to the start of the red again. This means that you have gone through one complete color cycle.  Work one chain in that first color (red in this case).  So when you start with the first row, you will start with the first color of your color sequence.

3)    Now we work the Linen stitch.

Linen Stitch : Here is an easy video tutorial for the linen stitch at https://youtu.be/ui2s0V-dGPg

4)    For our first stitch on Row 1, you will start with a sc in the 4th ch from hook.  You then continue working the Linen stitch all through the chain stitches till you come to the last color of the color sequence – in our case here it will be yellow.  Stop now and read on. Put hook and yarn down.

5)    Your row of linen stitch will not go all the way to the end of the chains you have made.  You will probably only have used 35 sts so about 17+ sc and 17+ chains in between.

6)    Take off the last sc and the last ch-1 you worked (in our case here with the yellow yarn).  Right then pick up your work and let’s carry on.

7)     Row 2 : Ch 2 (with that last bit of yellow yarn) ; sk the 1st sc and work a sc in the 1st ch-sp for your Linen stitch.

8)    Rep Row 2 for the length you need for your scarf / cowl or till you run out of yarn
That’s how simple and magical this pattern is !

If you have figured the color sequence through and worked as per these instructions, in the first 12 rows or so you will see the unmistakable diamond popping up and in a few inches you’ll be jumping for joy as the magic continues.
