STARLIGHT LACY BOLERO

This is a cute lacy bolero that just flirts on top of your dress – a lacy wispy creation that is just so cool!
It is a pretty (and not too difficult) pattern repeat and I’d say it can be attempted by almost anyone .. so come along and let’s see how we make this lovely creation.

Thank you for joining me.

And just for a quick sneak peek on what we’re doing, here’s the photo that inspired me to start on this project.
I do not claim this as my original pattern, but these are my original pattern notes as I work on my original and unique project.

Materials usedToday I’ve used ~ 250 gms of the absolutely superb Turkish Moda Vera Starlight 8-ply yarn with a 4 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends ; embroidery needle ; sewing needle

For Indians : The yarn I’ve used is about as thick as our Vardhaman Millenium yarn.
You could use Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic or   unbranded knitting cotton as well as Oswal acrylic yarn

International yarns : Of the other international yarns I’ve used, I’d say this is about the thickness of “I-love-this-cotton” cotton yarn from Hobby Lobby ; James & Brett Baby marble  yarn or ICE yarn. I’d say this lovely pattern could be used with finer yarns – any knitting cotton will work superbly too.

Difficulty level : Easy to Intermediate Skill level.

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch-3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.  This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

I have three days and this lovely yarn to be spun into (literally ;) ) a light, lacy bolero – so I was looking for something really quick & simple, yet something befitting this beautiful yarn.  I thought of a simple ch-sp pattern or an open weave and I chanced on this pattern on my Pinterest to-do.  I have been hard pressed for time, and I am grateful that this is a ready–made pattern from Favecrafts.

So what did I do differently?
While I've worked the pattern as given, using my own yarn and suitable hook, I am trying to make it easy for you to do so too – just in case you do not have that exact yarn specified by the designer.
If you look at the photos (designer and mine) you'll think that it's a different pattern - yarn makes such a difference, doesn't it?

If you have been following my blogs, you will know that I like to figure out a stitch count for all my projects, such that it can be made for any size, using any yarn and hook.  The pattern link is given below, but I suggest that you read my notes first, especially if you do not have the yarn specified by the designer.

Now, this pattern is worked side to side as a large rectangle.
The length is measured mid arm to mid arm across the back (just off the armhole, the top part of the upper arm).
This measurement will decide how long you work that first row you start with.
You then work it for the width you need , from shoulders down.

Now for stitch count – just ensure that you get the length you need using an uneven number of stitches.  The pattern instruction says start with ch 93.

I, as always, will urge you to try the foundation single crochet (fsc) or the foundation double crochet (fdc) start.

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : To refresh your skill on the fsc, please view this video https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

Foundation double crochet (fdc) : This is a unique way of starting a project directly with a row of double crochet stitches.  Here is an easy video tutorial https://youtu.be/hjNUYVvyU9k

The fdc start means you have a row of dc to start – but if you are still struggling with this start, then the fsc start and work a dc in each fsc all the way to the end.
This will be your 1st row. Ensure that you have an uneven number of sts.

If you are working with a chain start, then start with an even number of sts, and work your 1st dc in the 3rd chain from hk.
Ensure you have an uneven number of stitches at the end of your first row.

You can then go to the pattern sheet and follow the really simple pattern.

If you have used some other yarn and have used my calculations, I’d appreciate if you credit / mention me when you share you photos / project.  Thanks.

Hope you have fun creating this lovely bolero as well.
