In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.  This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

This lovely creation (photo by designer below) was shared on Facebook recently, and I was soon asked if I could re-create this wonderful project.
Get the pattern here

We start our project from the bottom up – from the base of the top to the shoulders.  We work a few inches and then increase for the sleeves – still working back and forth in rows.  Once we have done the sleeves bit, we decrease again.  So we have this odd looking rectangle of sorts.
To join we join the sides, and get the join (which will show against the front sides – so be sure to match the rows and work per pattern, else this will be one hard / not too neat join / finish!)
the bolero all done and modeled
I have not used the yarn specified, but I worked with the stitch number given for L/XL.  I will say that I have made a Size 34”/36”, so I achieved what I set out to (size-wise).  However, I will also add that the yarn I’ve used has a superb stretch and I did work with a slightly looser tension.

What do I do if I do not have the yarn specified? You can use any yarn for this project (I have).  There is a gauge given at the top of the pattern sheet.  Work a swatch first.  Then see how much more / many more stitches you need to work to get the gauge specified – and then work one size larger or smaller to get the size needed.  So say you need more stitches to achieve gauge, you will work the larger start number of stitches.  Also keep a track of how the project is moving forward.  Right at the bottom of the pattern sheet, the designer has given a diagram of what she is doing – so keep your measurements handy, and keep checking that what you are working on is going the same way – and voila! You can use your yarn & hook to get this beauty done!

Right then, all the best with your creative process.. and have fun crafting.
