EASY SCARF

Multi coloured / variegated yarns look great – but they are sometimes a bit of a worry to get a pattern done.  This yarn had some brilliant colours and I have used it for an earlier project.  I decided to try and see if I could get the argyle yarn pooling pattern done with the balance – sadly some yarns just do not work, do they?  If you go through the list of yarn requirements, there are specifications of lengths of color changes – and this yarn definitely did not meet them.  So I thought I would try to see if this worked along the length of the scarf, rather than trying to work the scarf the ‘regular’ way along the width.   Along the width means that you start at the base and then work that same width continuously till you get the length you need – and I thought I would try switching that.  Sadly as that did not work either – the color changes are too long and not consistent.  I think if the color changes are consistent (even if long), it may work along the length.. but that’s another experiment for another day.
Back with this yarn, after several tries, I settled on a simple pattern to make a easy slim scarf

Pattern instructions : (Using U.S terminology)
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog (as well as through the blog) for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.

The beauty of this pattern is that you can make it not just to any size, but to any width as well.  If you make it nice and wide, it becomes a superb wrap or shawl too.
Oh, and if you make this really really small (like head circumference), then you get a headband to match your scarf.  I have a load of headband patterns, and just wrote one with this similar pattern for a shelled headband - check it out.

The idea of this pattern is the same as that of the moss or granite moss or linen stitch.  The above stitches use sc – but for my scarf, I used hdc.

Our stitch count is in uneven numbers

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : To refresh your skill on the fsc, please view this video https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

Start : with fsc in an uneven / odd number (as many as needed for length of your scarf).  Turn.

You can work this pattern using sc / hdc or dc.
Depending on the length of your stitch, your work will look ‘tight’ or loose and lacy.

Row 1 : hdc in the 1st st ;
(ch 1, sk next fsc ; hdc in the next fsc) ;
rep (to) till end.  Turn.

Row 2 : ch 2, sk next hdc ; hdc in the next ch-1 sp;
(ch 1, sk next hdc ; hdc in the next ch-1 sp) ;
rep (to) till end.  Turn

Once again, we will sk all the hdc all around, and work only in the ch-1 sps.
Row 3 : hdc in the 1st st ;
(ch 1, sk next hdc ; hdc in the next ch-1 sp) ;
rep (to) till end.  Turn.

Rep Rows 2 and 3 till you have a width you are happy with.

Last border row : sc in the 1st st ;
(sk next ch-1 sp ; sc in the next st) ;
rep (to) till the end.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
