HUMMINGBIRD MOTIF
STATIONERY CLIP MOTIFS 13

I started with motifs for Project Chemo Crochet and then was asked to make a range of motifs for an “under the sea” party which lead to this set of motifs of stationery clips … what a fun creative journey this has been!

Materials used : Today I’ve used our lovely Anchor knitting cotton yarn with a 1.3 / 1.7.5 mm crochet hook
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

Difficulty level : Advanced

Stitches used :
Starting slip knot : Here’s how you start with a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/lJcqsVcs8cw

Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : This is a neat new way to start your work without a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs

Abbreviations used :
sc : single crochet                dc : Double crochet
ch : chain                              ch-sp : chain space
sp : space                             rep : Repeat
hk : hook                               lp (s) : loop(s)
yo : yarn over                        sl-st : slip stitch

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.  For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

A large part of the hummingbird is worked in one continuous movement.
This is an advanced skill level pattern.
There are a lot of brackets / parenthesis involved, and I have tried to make it as easy as I could - spacing each set of brackets out.  So please pay attention.

I am not going to indicate color changes to make it more difficult.
If you can attempt color changes, go for it.
Do try to follow the chart as well.

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : To refresh your skill on the fsc, please view this video https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

Start Row 1 : with 17 fsc or 18 ch.
(If working with fsc, you will start on the 1st fsc ; if you have started with ch, you will work your 1st sc in the 2nd ch from hk.  I am writing this pattern assuming you are starting with fsc)

In the following round we will work to the end of the fsc chain and then turn and work on the underside of the same fsc chain.

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

Round 2 : sc in the 1st fsc and in each fsc till 2nd last fsc ;
5 sc in the last fsc ;
Turn and work from under the chain ;
work 1 sc in each fsc till end

What is a chain stitch ? Here is an easy video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXx5ukBjKkY

Now we will continue to work the two feet of the  bird :
ch 9 and sl-st in the same last  sc of Row 2 ;
ch 8 and sl-st in the 1st sc of Row 2 ;
Do not turn, continue down the sts of Row 2.

In round 3, we will work along the sts of Row 2 creating the back, then work on the head and come down the front of bird to create the stomach, carry on down the feet finishing the two feet we started last row before ending where we started. OK?

We will also be working  a ch-2 picot in the 1st tail feather as well as the five feathers on the back.

How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook).  For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).
Here’s a great video https://youtu.be/8s3zVaBcn4s

Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Triple Crochet : trc : wrap yarn twice around hook, insert hk into st ; yo (4 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] three times.  One trc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/A0y4BbgDTbs

Round 3 : sc in the 1st 13 sts ;
hdc in the next st ; dc in the next st ;
2 dc each in the next 2 sts ; 2 dc + 1 trc in the next st ;
ch 9 , sl-st onto the top of the trc (beak made) ;
1 dc + 2 hdc in the next st ; sc in the next 6 sts ;
hdc in the next 6 sts ; sc in the next  st ;
[sk next st, sc in the next st] ;
rep [to] once (you’re now on the first tail feather) ;
sc in the next 3 sc ; sc + picot in the next sc ;
sc in the next 2 sc
(skip the remaining 4 ch from the 1st tail feather and the 1st 4 ch from the 2nd tail feather, and we will work directly into the 5th sc of the 2nd tail feather)
sc in the next 5 sc ;
sl-st into the 1st fsc base from Round 1
(or the same last sc, whichever is convenient – this is only to get a sharp finish for the tail feathers.
We will now continue to work on the back and the feathers off the back) ;
sc in the next 8 sc ;
sl-st in the next 3 sts ;
{ch 14, sl-st in the same last st} ;
rep {to} 3 times ;
ch 18, sl-st in the same last st ;
(five feathers made – now we will work on these feathers) ;
Turn and working down the ch-18 ; sc in the 1st 11 ch ;
hdc + dc + picot in the next ch ;
dc + hdc in the next ch ;
sc in the next ch ;
<sk all the remaining ch and the 1st 6 ch from the next feather and work in the 7th ch ; hdc + dc + picot in the next ch ;
dc + hdc in the next ch> ;
rep <to> in the next 3 sets of feathers ;
sc in the next 3 ch and join with a sl-st to the body.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Have fun – create something unique.
