APPLE
MOTIF
STATIONERY
CLIP MOTIFS
I
started with motifs for Project Chemo Crochet and then was asked to make a
range of motifs for an “under the sea” party which lead to this set of motifs
of stationery clips … what a fun creative journey this has been!

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
I’ve
worked on apple patterns before but there are so many cute patterns out there,
there’s always a chance of making something just a little different.
As
I’m working on cute motifs, thought I’d create a tiny apple today.
You
can make your apple in red, green or a darkish orange/brown.
Choose
your colour and work the body in that colour.
Then for the leaves,choose a shade of green. For the stalk and the little pip bit at the
bottom of the apple, I guess brown will work best – but hey, be creative.
If
you decide to make this a half sliced apple, then work with an off-white yarn
for the centre pulpy apple section and work one last round (in all sc) in the
apple skin colour. If you work this
apple, you will need to embroider in pips in the centre of your apple.
Part 1 :
Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro
What is a slip stitch : Here is a neat video tutorial at https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw
Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo
Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0
Start Round 1 : (for apple colour) : with a magic circle with 14 dc in it.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 2 :
2 dc in the 1st dc and in each dc till the end.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 3 :
sc in the 1st dc and in each dc till the end.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Fasten
off but leave a tail for attachment of this motif onto whatever you are
attaching it to.
Part 2 :
We
will work the brown stalk and the two leaves all from the same stitch which
will become the top of your apple.
Attach
your green yarn for the two leaves first.
What is a chain stitch ? Here is an easy video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXx5ukBjKkY
Half Double Crochet : Hdc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps. One hdc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg
Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8
Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps. One sc made. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k
First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M
Start Leaf 1 : with 6 ch. Turn ;
work a sl-st in the 2nd
ch from hk ; sc in the next ch ;
hdc + dc in the next ch ; dc + hdc in next ch
;
sc in the last ch and sl-st back into the st where you started.
Rep
this once more for the 2nd leaf.
Fasten
off green yarn and weave in ends.
Part 2A :
Attach
brown yarn in the same space (from where you started leaves) for the stem.
Start Stem :
with 6 ch. Turn ;
work a sc in the 2nd
ch from hk ;
sc in the next 2 ch sl-st in the remaining chs till end ;
sl-st back into the st where you started.
Fasten
off brown yarn and weave in ends.
Now
to get the typical shape of the apple, we need to squish in the bottom of the
apple. We will do this with the same
brown stem color yarn, and an embroidery needle. Find the stitch which is directly below the
stem – if you are fussy, you could count and find the dead centre. Re-attach
your yarn in Round 2 of the stitch. Work
your yarn through the corresponding stitch or Round 3 and then work it around
the back into Round 2 from where you’ve started. Now work 3-4 rounds passing the needle Round
3 all the way below and around the apple (not through Round 3 now, but directly
below and around it) and into the back. Pull tightly each time, squishing the
bottom up just a bit to get the shape.
Fasten
off and weave in ends.
Round 2 :
2 sc each in the 1st 2 sts ;
2 hdc each in the next 2 sts ; 2 dc each in the next 32 sts (worked
in spirals) ;
hdc in the next 2 sts ; sc in the last 2 sts ;
sl-st into the
next st and fasten off.
Leave a tail for attachment to the 1st st.
Note
:
I worked the crab stitch or reverse single crochet to finish my shell.
