BALLERINA MOTIF
STATIONERY CLIP MOTIFS

I started with motifs for Project Chemo Crochet and then was asked to make a range of motifs for an “under the sea” party which lead to this set of motifs of stationery clips … what a fun creative journey this has been!

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

Skill level : Advanced

Stitches used :
Starting slip knot : Here’s how you start with a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/lJcqsVcs8cw

Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : This is a neat new way to start your work without a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs

Abbreviations used :
sc : single crochet            dc : Double crochet
ch : chain                         ch-sp : chain space
sp : space                         rep : Repeat

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.  For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

We start our ballerina dancing doll motif with the face, then work the arms, body and the dress.  You can work it all in one colour as well.

Please note that this is a complicated piece – and worked continuously – so please pay attention to all my notes.  Thanks.

Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro

What is a slip stitch : Here is a neat video tutorial at https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Start Round 1 : (Using face colour)with a magic circle and 16 dc in the circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Fasten off face colour and attach hair colour.

How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook).  For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).
Here’s a great video https://youtu.be/8s3zVaBcn4s

What is a chain stitch ? Here is an easy video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXx5ukBjKkY

Row 2 : (using hair colour) :
ch 3 + dc in the 1st st ;
sk next st, sl-st in the next st ;
ch 3 + dc in the next st ;
sk the next st, sl-st in the next st ;
3 picot all in the next st ;
sk the next st and sl-st in the next st ;
[Now we work the next row by working from behind the sts)
ch 3 + dc in the sp between picots 1 & 2 ; sc in the next st of Row 1 ;
ch 3 + dc in the 1st st ; sc in the next st of Row 1 ;
(ch 3 + dc in the next st ; sc in the next st of Row 1) ;
rep (to) once ;
sl-st in the 1st st of the face.

Fasten off hair colour and re-attach dress colour.

We will now continue with the arm.
{ch 4 + ch 3 picot + ch 4.  Turn and work 1 sc in the 2nd ch from hk.
Work 1 sc all the way down to the end} ;

We will now work on a few sts to start on the chest and then work down to create the 2nd arm.

sc in the next 3 sts ;
rep {to} for the 2nd arm ;
and we’re back at the chest.

sc in the next 3 sts ; Turn ;
dc in the 1st sc ; 3 dc each in the next 2 sc. Turn.

We’re still working on the petit chest/waist , and we’ll decrease the stitches we worked.

Double crochet 3-tog : dc 3-tog :   Here is an easy video tutorial at https://youtu.be/qlnqXDB3OUM

dc 3-tog over the 1st 3 sts ; dc 3-tog over the next 3 sts ; dc in the last dc. Turn.

We’re cinching the waist a little bit, so we’ll work a sc 2-tog.

Single crochet 2-together : sc 2-tog :
Insert hk into st, yo and pull up a lp (2 lps on hk) ; insert hk into next sc, yo and pull up a lp (3 lps on hk); yo and draw through all 3 lps.  One sc 2-tog complete.  Visit this video tutorial at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whlsMemDHLc

sc 2-tog over the 1st 2 sts , sc in the next st.  Turn.

Triple Crochet : trc : wrap yarn twice around hook, insert hk into st ; yo (4 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] three times.  One trc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/A0y4BbgDTbs

We will now work our skirt off these two sts of the tiny waist.
6 trc in the 1st st ; 6 trc in the next st.  Turn.

Double crochet 2-tog : dc 2-tog :  [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;
{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 2 times.  One dc 2-tog made.
This video tutorial at https://youtu.be/1_oPlUfN5eg shows you how to use the dc 2-tog to decrease.
Sometimes we work the dc 2-tog in the same stitch, to use as a decorative stitch. Visit this video tutorial at https://youtu.be/lLUXOJ1sY9w

In the following row, (added complications), we will work a dc 2-tog in each st, and then we will work a ch 3 + dc on the top of each dc 2-tog.
This all adds up as one stitch – and for convenience, I’m terming this our “New dc 2-tog”.  This adds to the flare of the dress as well as a lovely frill for the dress.

“New dc 2-tog” over the 1st st and in all of the next 11 sts till the end.
Fasten off dress colour yarn.  We are on the wrong side of work.

Re-attach skin colour yarn (or whatever colour you want for the legs) in the 3rd dc 2-tog from the end.

<ch 13 ; Turn and work a sc in the 2nd ch from hk ; sl-st in the next st ; sc + picot in the next ch ; sk next ch and sc in all the next ch till end>.  Fasten off.

Note : Now here’s where you need to decide what to do – either fasten off and re-attach yarn or sl-st till where you need to be.

You need to sk the next 5 dc 2-tog sts and attach the yarn along the back of the next st.
Rep <to> for the next leg.

Fasten off and leave a long tail to attach your motif.

Have fun – create something unique.
