Materials used : Today I’ve used some local Indian Red Heart / Coats Doli thread with a 1.75 mm crochet hook ; embroidery needle sewing needle ; fabric glue to seal ends ; crochet stitch markers ; buttonspress buttons ; satin ribbon ; headband ; tic-tac clips ; rubber band ; hair comb or barrette  ; beads n more

For Indians You could use Anchor , Red rose , 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns as well as Oswal & Vardhaman acrylic yarns ; Baby soft acrylic yarn , Ganga Spectrum as well

General yarn info : Today’s yarn is not specific for this pattern.
For this project, use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.  As we’re working on a large table cloth, the thicker the yarn the faster your work will proceed but the thinner your yarn, the lacier and lighter your work.

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn , Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, Caron Simply Soft , Bernat Softee chunky.

Instruction information

Sweet Nothings Crochet free crochet pattern blog, free crochet pattern for a table cover, photo detail of the centre of the table cover

Please note that I start all my rounds with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for a video tutorial on all the stitches needed to make this full project.
Please read through all my detailed notes before you pick up your hook.
This helps you get an idea of what we’re creating and what notes / videos to look out for.

You can make this as large or (small) as you want. You can finish a small doily after you finish the initial rounds for the star pattern.  Alternatively you can continue increasing the laciness long after you have completed the last starry pattern bit and have that fall lightly all around the edge of your table.
Here’s to your creativity starting today.

Sweet Nothings Crochet free crochet pattern blog, free crochet pattern for a table cover, chart of the table cover

Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and work 8 hdc in that circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 2 : 2 dc in the 1st hdc and in each hdc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 3 : dc in the 1st 2 dc ;
(ch 3, dc in the next 2 dc) ;
rep (to) all around ;
ch 3, and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

In the following round, the chart reads a dc 5-tog.
Depending on the thickness of your yarn, I’d say you could work a dc 4-tog as well.  Check the top of this blog for a video tutorial on both stitches.

Round 4 : ch 4, dc 5-tog in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
ch 4, sl-st in the next dc ;
*sl-st in the next dc ;
ch 4, dc 5-tog in the next ch-3 sp ;
ch 4, sl-st in the next dc* ;
rep *to* all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 5 : sl-st to the top of the 1st dc 5-tog , sc in that same 1st dc 5-tog ;
ch 7, sc in the next dc 5-tog ;
(ch 3, sc in the same dc 5-tog ; ch 7, sc in the next dc 5-tog) ;
rep (to) all around ;
ch 3, and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

In the following round, we will work a dc 2-tog.
Double crochet 2-tog : dc 2-tog :  [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;
{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 2 times.  One dc 2-tog made.

In case this video tutorial does not come on, go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCQOBc83Vxo

Round 6 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ; dc 2-tog in the same 1st ch-3 sp ;
*ch 5, sc in the next ch-7 sp ;
(ch 5, dc 2-tog in the next ch-3 sp ;
ch 3, dc 2-tog in the same ch-3 sp)* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 3, join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

There are two ways to finish this round and all following rounds (till Round 29).
a)   You can end with a sl-st at the end of the round.  In this case, remember that we start with the ch-3 sp in between the two dc 2-tog, so you need to fumble a bit to get into that space ; OR
b)   You end with a (ch 1, hdc) and join to the 1st st.  In this case, you are in the middle of that last ch-3 sp between the first and last dc 2-tog and we start right here.
Choose what suits you best.
Either way the pattern will read sl-st into that 1st ch-3 sp.
If you are already there (using Idea b), please do not sl-st but work straight on.

Round 7 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ; dc 2-tog in the same 1st ch-3 sp ;
*ch 13, dc 2-tog in the next ch-3 sp ;
ch 3, dc 2-tog in the same ch-3 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 3, join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 8 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ; dc 2-tog in the same 1st ch-3 sp ;
*ch 7, sc in the next ch-13 sp ;
ch 7, dc 2-tog in the next ch-3 sp ;
ch 3, dc 2-tog in the same ch-3 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 3, join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 9 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ; dc 2-tog in the same 1st ch-3 sp ;
*ch 7, sc in the next ch-7 sp ;
ch 3, sc in the next ch-7 sp ;
ch 7, dc 2-tog in the next ch-3 sp ;
ch 3, dc 2-tog in the same ch-3 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 3, join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 10 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ; dc 2-tog in the same 1st ch-3 sp ;
*(ch 7, dc 2-tog in the next ch-3 sp ;
ch 5, dc 2-tog in the same ch-3 sp) ;
ch 7, dc 2-tog in the next ch-3 sp ;
ch 3, dc 2-tog in the same ch-3 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 3, join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

In the following round, you can work either dc or trc.
The pattern chart reads trc or treble / triple crochet.

Triple Crochet : trc : wrap yarn twice around hook, insert hk into st ; yo (4 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] three times.  One trc made.

You are now in the center of that last ch-7 sp.
From now on, we will end with the same ch 4 + dc.

Round 29 : sc in the 1st ch 7 sp ;

ch 3, sc in the next ch-7 sp] ;
(ch 3, dc 3-tog in the next ch-3 sp ;
ch 3, sc in the next ch-7 sp) ;
rep (to) 2 times ;
rep [to] once ;
rep {to} 4 times* ;
rep *to* all around till the last ch-7 sp ;
ch 4 + dc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Rounds 32 – 45 : Rep Rounds 30 & 31 till you have a whole round of dc 3-tog.
Remember that you will be increasing two dc 3-tog in each set and reducing the ch-7 sps between the two sets.

Great job.  You can actually end right here and have a beautiful doily.

In the following round we will work a sc 2-tog over 2 ch-3 sps, skipping a dc 3-tog in between.  So for this, you work the 1st leg of the sc 2-tog in the 1st ch-3 sp, sk the dc 3-tog in between and work the 2nd leg in the 2nd ch-3 sp.
For convenience let’s call this a “Special sc 2-tog”

Single crochet 2-together : sc 2-tog :
Insert hk into st, yo and pull up a lp (2 lps on hk) ; insert hk into next sc, yo and pull up a lp (3 lps on hk); yo and draw through all 3 lps.  One sc 2-tog complete.

Visit this video tutorial at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whlsMemDHLc

Round 46 : sc in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
*(ch 8, sk sc, sc in the next ch-3 sp) ;
ch 5, sk dc 3-tog, sc in the next ch-3 sp ;
[ch 8, sk sc & dc 3-tog, “Special sc 2-tog” over the next 2 ch-3 sps] ;
rep (to) once ;
rep [to] once* ;
rep *to* all around and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Yet again I’m going to ask that you look at where we are head.
We have made a set of ch-8 sps, and a set of ch-5 sps.  We will be working our pineapples off the ch-5 sps all around.

In our following round, work a trc (or a triple/treble crochet stitch ) in the ch-5 sp.
Please check the top of this blog for a video tutorial if needed.

Round 47 : sl-st and sc in the 1st ch-8 sp ;
*10 trc in the next ch-5 sp ;
sc in the next ch-8 sp ;
[ch 7, sc in the next ch- sps] ;
rep [to] once* ;
rep *to* all around and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Chainless start for Triple / Treble Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of trc.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/f42MO0cGYC0

Round 48 : sc in the 1st trc ;
*(ch 1, trc in the next trc) ;
rep (to) 8 times ;
ch 7, sc in the next ch-8 sp ;
ch 7, trc in the next trc* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 3 + dc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 49 : sc in the 1st ch-sp ;
ch 4, sc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
*(ch 5, sc in the next ch-1 sp ) ;
rep (to) 7 times ;
ch 4, sc in the next ch-7 sp ;
ch 4, sc in the next ch-1 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 2 + hdc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 50 : sc in the 1st ch-sp ;
ch 3, sc in the 1st ch-5 sp ;
*(ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp ) ;
rep (to) 6 times ;
[ch 3, sc in the next ch-4 sp] ;
rep [to] once ;
ch 3, sc in the next ch-5 sp*
rep *to* all around ;
ch + hdc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
You are now in the middle of that last ch-3 sp.

Round 51 : dc in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
ch 3, sc in the 1st ch-5 sp ;
*(ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp ) ;
rep (to) 5 times ;
[ch 3, sk next ch-3 sp, {dc ; ch 2, dc} in the next ch-3 sp] ;
ch 3, sc in the next ch-5 sp*
rep *to* all around ;
dc + ch 2 and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Note : We will be starting in this last ch-2 sp for the next few rounds.  So you could either join with the ch-2 and then turn and work your 1st dc in the same ch-2 sp, or opt to work a hdc to join.
As the instructions will get very confusing, I am giving you the option here.
So, the last dc will be worked into the st of Round 50, and (instead of the ch 2), the hdc will be worked into the 1st st of Round 51 to join – sounds confusing, but easy enough once you’ve done exactly what it says.

Round 52 : 2 dc in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
ch 3, sc in the 1st ch-5 sp ;
*(ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp ) ;
rep (to) 4 times ;
[ch 3, sk next ch-3 sp, {2 dc ; ch 2, 2 dc} in the next ch-3 sp] ;
ch 3, sc in the next ch-5 sp*
rep *to* all around ;
2 dc + ch 2 and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 53 : 2 dc in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
ch 5, sc in the 1st ch-5 sp ;
*(ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp ) ;
rep (to) 3 times ;
[ch 5, sk next ch-3 sp, {2 dc ; ch 5, 2 dc} in the next ch-3 sp] ;
ch 3, sc in the next ch-5 sp*
rep *to* all around ;
2 dc + ch 5 and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Important Note : Yet again we have the joining conundrum.
So for that last ch-5 join, you can work 5 chain OR you can work ch 2 + dc and join with the 1st st of Round 53.  Either way, we will start our first set of sts (for Round 54) right here in this 1st ch-5 sp.

Round 54 : 2 dc in the 1st ch-5 sp ;
ch 3, 2 dc in the same 1st ch-5 sp ;
*(ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp) ;
rep (to) 3 times ;
[ch 5, {2 dc ; ch 3, 2 dc ; ch 3, 2 dc} all in the next ch-5 sp]*
rep *to* all around ;
2 dc + ch 3 and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Note : Once again you can end with the ch-3 or (ch 1 + hdc) to be in the centre of that last ch-3 sp.

Round 55 : (2 dc ; ch 3, 2 dc) all in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
*(ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp) ;
rep (to) 2 times ;
ch 5, rep (to) once ; ch 3, rep (to) once*
rep *to* all around ;
ch 1 + hdc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 56 : <2 dc ; ch 3, 2 dc> all in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
*[ch 7, sc in the next ch-3 sp] ;
{ch 7, rep <to> in the next ch-3 sp} ;
(ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp) ;
rep (to) once ;
ch 5, rep (to) once ;
ch 5, rep <to> once* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 1 + hdc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 57 : (2 dc ; ch 3, 2 dc) all in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
*[ch 7, sc in the next ch-7 sp] ;
rep [to] once ;
{ch 7, rep (to) in the next ch-3 sp} ;
ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp ;
ch 5, rep (to) once* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 1 + hdc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 58 : (2 dc ; ch 3, 2 dc) all in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
*[ch 7, sc in the next ch-7 sp] ;
rep [to] 2 times ;
{ch 7, rep (to) in the next ch-3 sp} ;
ch 6, rep (to) in the next ch-3 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 1 + hdc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 59 : (2 dc ; ch 3, 2 dc) all in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
*[ch 7, sc in the next ch-7 sp] ;
rep [to] 3 times ;
{ch 7, rep (to) in the next ch-3 sp} ;
sc in the next ch-6 sp ;
rep (to) in the next ch-3 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 1 + hdc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 60 : sl-st + 3 dc in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
*[ch 7, sc in the next ch-7 sp] ;
rep [to] 4 times ;
{ch 7, 3 dc in the next ch-3 sp} ;
ch 3, 3 dc in the next ch-3 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 1 + hdc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 61 : 3 dc in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
*[ch 7, sc in the next ch-7 sp] ;
rep [to] 5 times ;
{ch 7, 3 dc in the next ch-3 sp}* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 4 + dc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 62 : sl-st past the 1st dc and into the 2nd dc , sc in the same 2nd dc ;
*[ch 7, sc in the next ch-7 sp] ;
rep [to] 6 times ;
{ch 7, sk next dc, dc in the next dc}* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 4 + dc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 63 : sc in the 1st ch-7 sp ;
*ch 7, sc in the next ch-7 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 4 + hdc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Rep Round 63 till you have the diameter you want for your project.

In our last round, we can opt to finish with ch-7 sps or ch-7 sps with a picot.
So you will work the same pattern as for Round 62, but we add the picot as you end.  The ch-7 stitch then is (ch 7 + picot) all the way around.

Here is a video to show you how to work a ch-3 or a ch-5 picot.  I have worked a ch-3 picot.
