H IS FOR …

And today let’s work on our H is for…
We’ve got a hen, a horse, a pair of hats and a hippo for our cute little motifs for alphabet H.  Come along, let’s see what we can do with this set.

Thank you for joining me.

Materials used : Today I’ve used our lovely Oswal 4-ply acrylic yarn with a 3.5 mm crochet hook
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic or  unbranded  knitting cotton as well as Vardhaman acrylic yarns

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Stitches used :
Starting slip knot : Here’s how you start with a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/lJcqsVcs8cw

Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : This is a neat new way to start your work without a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs

Abbreviations used :
sc : single crochet                dc : Double crochet
ch : chain                             ch-sp : chain space
sp : space                            rep : Repeat

For the hen, I have used white and red yarn.

Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro

What is a slip stitch : Here is a neat video tutorial at https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Start Round 1 : (Using white yarn) :
with a magic circle and work 11 dc in it.
Pull lightly to close but do not join.
You should have a semicircle finish

Row 2 : 2 dc in the 1st dc and in each dc till end.  Turn.

In the following row, we will work the last row of the hen’s belly and then continue down the back to make the tail, and then across the top to get to the head.  A little complicated, but totally do-able.

What is a chain stitch ? Here is an easy video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXx5ukBjKkY

Row 3 : dc in the 1st dc ; 2 dc in the next dc ;
(dc in the next 5 dc ; 2 dc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) till end ;
ch 4, Turn and work a sl-st in the 2nd ch from hk ;
sc in the next ch ; hdc in the next ch ;
{now working along the top of the sts, we will need to work 2 sts per horizontal bar of each dc}
Work 11 dc along the top of the hen till you reach the 1st dc {do not work a hdc in that 1st /last dc at the end – leave that for the head.

We will also be working a picot
How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook).  For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).
Here’s a great video https://youtu.be/8s3zVaBcn4s

Work the following sts in the last dc [dc ; 9 trc ; dc and 1 hdc] ;
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Red throat wattle :   (Make one)
The red wattle is worked just between the head and body – so reattach red yarn at that point and work the wattle.
Start : (Using red yarn) : ch 3 + dc + ch 3 + sl-st all in the same st.

Comb on the head : (Make one)
We work the comb on top of the hen’s head.
There are three ‘prongs’ to the comb, and we start them on the 3rd  trc or the 4th st on the head, counting from the tail side.
Attach your red yarn in this 3rd trc.

Start : (Using red yarn) :
[with ch 3, dc, ch 3, sl-st] all in the marked st ;
*sl-st into the next st,
rep [to] in the next st* ;
rep *to* once.
Fasten off red yarn and weave in ends.

Beak :   (Make one)
The beak is worked on the 3rd st in the bottom of the head.
So attach your yellow yarn in the 3rd st from the bottom of the head.

Start : (Using yellow yarn) : ch 3, sl-st into the same sp that you attached and worked your st from.
So this is like a picot st, but worked in yellow.

Finishing :
Using the photos as a guide, work in an eye using black yarn and an embroidery needle.
