BIRD
MOTIF
STATIONERY
CLIP MOTIFS 3
I
started with motifs for Project Chemo Crochet and then was asked to make a
range of motifs for an “under the sea” party which lead to this set of motifs
of stationery clips … what a fun creative journey this has been!

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
I’ve
worked on bird patterns before but there are so many cute patterns out there,
there’s always a chance of making something just a little different.
As
I’m working on cute motifs, thought I’d create a tiny birdie today.
Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro
What is a slip stitch : Here is a neat video tutorial at https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw
Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo
Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0
Start Round 1 : with a
magic circle with 16 dc in it.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Birdie
head made.
We’ll go straight down to
work on the back of the bird.
What is a chain stitch ? Here is an easy video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXx5ukBjKkY
Half Double Crochet : Hdc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps. One hdc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg
Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8
Row 2 :
ch 12 ; Turn and work a hdc in the 3rd ch from hk ;
sc in the
next 6 ch ; 2 sc in the next ch ; sc in the last 2 ch.
Now
to join the body to the head,
sk the next dc on the bird’s head and
sl-st in the next dc. Turn.
We
have turned and will be working on the birdie body.
Row 3 :
sk the 1st 2 sts , 6 dc in the 3rd st ;
sk the next 2 sts
, sl-st in the next 3 sts. Turn.
Row 4 :
3 dc in the 1st dc ; 2 dc each in the next 5 dc.
Now
to join the body to the head, sk the next dc on the bird’s head and
sl-st in the next dc. Turn.
Birdie
almost done – we just need to work in the beak – so sl-st in the next 2 sts
towards the front of the birdie face, and let’s work the beak in the next st.
ch
3 , turn and sl-st in the 2nd ch from hk ;
sc in the next ch and
sl-st in the next dc on the face of the bird.
The
lil bird all done
Bird’s wing :
We
work the wing separately and then attach it onto the bird body.
Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and 6 sc in it.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 2 :
sc in the 1st sc ;
ch 1, hdc + dc + ch 2 + sc in the next st ;
(ch
1, sc in the next st) ;
rep (to) all the way around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Fasten
off and leave a tail for attaching wing onto bird.
Decide
if you want one or two of these wings and make them accordingly.
You
are done with the bird motif, and can opt out of making the stem.
Start :
(using brown for the stem) :
with ch 14 ;
with ch 14 ;
Turn and sl-st
in the 2nd st from ch ; sl-st in the next 2 ch ;
ch
6 ; Turn and sc in the 2nd st from ch ; sc in the next 2 ch ;
(we’ll
now add an off-shoot to the stem) ;
ch
4, Turn and sl-st in the 2nd st from ch ; sl-st in the next 2
ch ;
sc
in the next ch on the main branch of the stem ;
sc
in the next ch ;
(you’re
above the folded portion of the stem) ; sc in the last 10 ch.
Fasten
off and leave a tail for attachment.
Leaf :
Start :
with ch 7 ;
Turn and sl-st in the 2nd ch from hk ;
sc in the
next ch ; dc in the next 2 ch ;
sc in the next ch ; sl-st in the next ch ;
(One
leaf made – we will now make the 2nd leaf directly too using the
very same instructions. Both leaves will
be joined in the centre – and when you fasten off, leave a tail and use that to
join onto the stem you’ve made).
Decide
how many leaves you want and go a lil leaf crazy ;)
Flower :
Half double crochet 2-tog : hdc 2-tog : [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp] (3 lps on hk) ; insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp (4 lps on hk) ; yo, draw through all 4 lps on hk. One hdc 2-tog made.
Check the video tutorial at https://youtu.be/jdaXTr7Lcig
Start :
[with ch 3 ; hdc 2-tog in the 3rd ch from hk ;
ch 1, sl-st in the
same 3rd ch from hk] (one petal made) ;
rep [to] 2 more times, and
you have one cute little flower done.
Leave a tail for attachment.
Make
one flower each (three petalled) for the two little stalks of our stem.
Have
fun – create something unique.
