X IS FOR … CROCHET MOTIFS

X IS FOR …

“X” is a difficult one to find words with, leave along words that you can crochet :D .. but we have X is for X-ray (of course!) and xylophone.

Come along, let’s see what we can do with this set.

Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.

All my blogs can be printed.  Find the printer friendly (green) link at the bottom of this blog.  You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.

Remember that you only print if absolutely essential.  Save paper – Save Our Earth.

Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation.

Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.

To purchase this or similar yarn online, click here to buy your yarns online via Amazon.  While you will still pay the same, I may get paid by Amazon as well.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers.

Materials used : Today I’ve used our lovely Oswal 4-ply acrylic yarn with a 3.5 mm crochet hook
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Stitches used :
Starting slip knot : Here’s how you start with a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/lJcqsVcs8cw

Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : This is a neat new way to start your work without a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs

This xylophone is my own creation and its just made with a set of ‘rectangles’ one after another.  The two ends of the xylophone are made in brown (or whatever color you want for your base – so black/brown/white)

How to change colors seamlessly : Here’s an easy video tutorial to show you how to change from the Main color to the Contrast or second color of yarn seamlessly.  View it at https://youtu.be/fRzSBja9jno

Foundation double crochet (fdc) : This is a unique way of starting a project directly with a row of double crochet stitches.  Here is an easy video tutorial https://youtu.be/hjNUYVvyU9k

What is a chain stitch ? Here is an easy video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXx5ukBjKkY

Start Row 1 : (Using brown yarn) : with 10 fdc.  Turn
In case you start with ch, start with 12 ch and work your 1st dc in the 3rd ch from hk.  It really does not matter how many ch you start with – this is just what I did.

Fasten off brown and add red yarn (or any other yarn of your choice.. decide on the color scheme for your xylophone keys first and keep in order of use.. just take them all one at a time.)

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Row 2 : 2 dc in the 1st dc ;
dc in each dc till the last dc ;
2 dc in the last dc. Turn.

Rep Row 2, changing color every row as per your color combination or following my color scheme.
When you decide you have a long enough xylophone, end with brown (or whatever color you have started with for the ‘base’ of your xylophone)

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Xylophone mallets :
I worked one continuous chain in brown for the ‘stick’ part of the mallet and then added on a little bit of red at each end for the ends of the mallet.

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : To refresh your skill on the fsc, please view this video

Start with brown yarn and 11 fsc.
Just  before you fasten off brown yarn, attach red yarn (or whatever color you want for the end of your mallet) ; {ch 2 + hdc + ch 1 + sl-st all in the same st}.
Fasten off both brown and red yarns.

Attach red yarn at the other end of your fsc chain and work {to} in that end as well.

To attach : Fold the fsc chain in half and attach it to one end of your xylophone in the 6th fsc (which is the centre of the 11-fsc ch).

Block as per yarn specifications.

Have fun – create something unique.
