OSCAR,
THE GROUCH
SESAME
STREET GRANNY SQUARE
IN
THE ROUND – 24
If
you have been following my blogs, you’ll know that we’re creating some really
cute 9” x 9” squares that will go to Project Chemo Crochet where they will make
them into toddler blankets for little children battling cancer. Read all about this wonderful charity on
their Facebook page or website and see how you can help too. Come, let’s spread a few smiles.
In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”. Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.
All my blogs can be printed. Find the printer friendly (green) link at the bottom of this blog. You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.
Remember that you only print if absolutely essential. Save paper – Save Our Earth.
Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation.
Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me. Cheers.
Working
with these same inspirations, here are my granny squares for this series. Oscar is the last of the Sesame Street Gang in the granny square series, and here's the gang.
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Working
with the general idea from Ashleigh’s pattern, start with the centre that will
be the face colour of the character you are working on. So yellow for Big bird & Ernie, red for
Elmo, orange for Bert , blue for cookie monster and green today for Oscar, the
Grouch.
Once
you are done with Rounds 1 – 5 in green to create Oscar’s face, you will start
creating the border granny square, still working in rounds but working with
either off white or white for the border.
These rounds need to be in another colour to accent the character you
have worked on in the middle.
In
case you are just looking to make a motif, then work Rounds 1 – 4 or 5
(depending on how large a motif you want) and then go straight to the facial
features bit. I would suggest that for a
motif, you work a round of sc or hdc in grey after the green rounds, to show
Oscar in his dustbin.
To
make a blanket or afghan, you just work as many squares as you’d like to get
the size you need and then join them up using one of the joining techniques
given above. Do check the long list of
pattern links at the end of this blog for more cute and interesting patterns I’ve
worked on before this. Cheers and have a
fun creative day.
Tweaks that I’ve done for our Oscar, the Grouch square :
1.
I
started with a centre (green for Oscar) circle and then worked the off- white
as my border.
2.
I
worked the first four rounds per pattern – so 60 sts in dc as instructed.
3.
I
then worked a round of hdc, mainly to ensure that I get my granny square a
little large faster J
4. We now work
the ch-sps round in off-white or white. When working for the off-white square,
work as instructed in the original pattern.
You need a total of 12 ch-5 sps all around. In case you have grey (for Oscar’s dustbin),
then you could work with the border in grey and those who know just what you
are making will appreciate the attention to detail ;)
5.
I
worked 5 dc in each ch-5 sp of Round 2 of the granny squares (in white) ; and (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) for each corner ch-5
sp.
6. I then
worked 1 dc in each dc, and then the (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) in each corner ch-3
sp. I just continued till I had a 9” x
9” square. Easy enough, right?
Once
the basic square is done, we need to add in the special facial features.
For Oscar’s eyes : Follow instructions for Bert’s oval
eyes.
Make
two
Round 1 :
(Using white) : Start with a magic circle and 10 hdc in that circle.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (10)
Round 2 :
(Using white) : 2 sc in the 1st hdc ; 2 dc in each of the next 3 sts
; 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts ; 2 dc in each of the next 3 sts ; 2 sc in the
last st.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (20).
Fasten
off and leave a long tail for attachment.
You should have an oval shaped eye.
Repeat for the other eye.
For Oscar’s eyebrows : (Using orange) : Follow
instructions for Ernie’s uni-brow but make it a little longer, and when
attaching just give it the shape by pinching in the centre.
So
make one.
Row 1 :
I
worked a fdc row with 20 fdc.
Place
& pin eyes on face first, and then curve the eyebrow over it. Do not attach eyes before placing eyebrows
and pinning it all down.
For Oscar’s mouth : Using black
Start
with a magic circle and 9 dc in that circle.
Turn.
DO
NOT join.
Row 1 :
dc in the 1st dc ;
(2
dc in the next dc ; dc in the next dc) ;
rep
(to) till end. Turn.
Fasten
off and leave a tail for attachment.
For Oscar’s tongue : (Using red) :
Start
with a magic circle and 10 dc in that circle.
Do
not join. Leave as a semi circle. Fasten
off and leave a tail for attachment.
Keep
Oscar, the Grouch’s picture in front of you to see how to place all his facial
features.
I
quite loved working on The Grouch, didn’t you?
Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.
Invisible join : Here’s a quick tutorial on how to join using the embroidery needle and whipstitch to get an invisible join at https://youtu.be/a6XZQ6VzJFM
