FOOD
SERIES - IN THE ROUND - 39
Welcome
back to Sweet Nothings Crochet free pattern blogs.
If
you have been following my blogs, you’ll know that we’re creating some really
cute 9” x 9” squares for Project Chemo Crochet that will go to making blankets
for toddler battling cancer.
This
cupcake granny square is the last in my food series.

You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Instructions using U.S terminology
There
are some cupcake squares out there – but I was looking for something with a bit
of a 3D effect – so I decided to use the basic pattern I’ve used before and
tweak it a bit to get the finish I wanted.
I
worked Rounds 1 – 3 in pink (or whatever colour you want your cupcake icing)
and then worked a round in slip stitch using brown.
This
slip stitch round is extra – but do not worry as it does not affect your counts
or the pattern. Just continue with the
pattern.
I
then changed to blue (which will be the colour for the plate onto which your
cupcake is kept ;) ) and worked the round pattern till end.
I
changed for the last time to off white to get the round into a square as per
the pattern link above.
For the icing,
I worked with off white and used front post stitches.
Check
the top of this blog for a ‘how to’ for all front post stitches used here.
For
the 3D icing, I started with the centre of the cupcake, and worked a front post
double crochet around the 1st st of the Round 1, and then worked 2
fpdc around each of the next sts of Round 1.
When
you finish Round 1, do not join but continue working 2 fpdc around all
the sts of Round 2, and then Round 3 – all in spirals.
For
the last 3 sts of Round 3, I worked 2 fphdc each in the last 2 sts and
then 1 fphdc and 1 fpsc around the last st, to get the icing curved down and
flattened to the base. Fasten off and
weave in ends.
If
you find working with front post stitches hard to do (and it is a bit tricky), you
could work a row of about 75 fsc, and then work 2 dc in each fsc all the way to
the last 3 fsc – in the third and second last 2 fsc, work 1 hdc each, and in
the last fsc, work 1 sc. Leave a long
tail for attachment and then attach this on spirally onto the top of your
cupcake.
For the cherry on the top, I worked in red.
Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and 6 hdc in it.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 2 :
Work 2 sc in each hdc all around. Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Fasten
off and leave a long tail.
Using
a tapestry needle, run your needle through each alternate stitch of Round 2 to
bunch it up together and make a small ball.
Attach this cherry ball to the centre of your cupcake.
I
hope you enjoy making this tasty sweet morsel – I loved creating it ;)
Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.
Invisible join : Here’s a quick tutorial on how to join using the embroidery needle and whipstitch to get an invisible join at https://youtu.be/a6XZQ6VzJFM
