BURGER GRANNY SQUARE FOOD SERIES - IN THE ROUND - 37
BURGER GRANNY SQUARE
FOOD SERIES - IN THE ROUND - 37
Welcome back to more yummy squares in my Food Series. Today we will make a burger mitered granny square.
If you have been following my blogs, you’ll know that we’re creating some really cute 9” x 9” squares for Project Chemo Crochet that will be made into toddler blankets.
In case you have just joined me, just check under “labels” on the right hand side of this blog and look under “crochet granny squares” or “crochet blankets” for what we’ve been working on.
Then feel free to follow me here on my blog or via Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest (all links at the end of this blog) so that all future feeds and patterns come right to you. Cheers.
Thanks for coming along and spreading smiles.
Materials used : Today I’ve used a 4-ply acrylic baby soft yarn with a 4 mm crochet hook.
It does not matter what yarn / hook you use, to make it to any size you want.
Abbreviations used :
sc : single crochet dc : Double crochet
ch : chain ch-sp : chain space
sp : space rep : Repeat
trc : Treble / triple crochet
dtrc : Double triple crochet
Stitches used :
Starting slip knot : This is a neat new way to start your work without a slip knot.
Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLuSVyKvoUg
Hdc : Half Double Crochet : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk), yo, draw through all 3 lps. One hdc made.
Chainless dc start : Instead of the usual start with ch 2 or ch 3, I’d like to introduce this lovely new way of starting a dc row. Do take a look at this self-explanatory super video http://www.mooglyblog.com/chainless-starting-double-crochet/
In case you are unhappy with this start, or do not like it, do continue with the usual ch-2 or ch-3 start. However, all instructions will be given assuming that you are using the chainless dc start.

Instructions using U.S terminology
For my burger granny square, I have used the basic pattern from https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/puppy-dog-granny-afghan-square to get my square to the size I needed. I have changed it a bit to make the puppy a burger..so come along and check my notes before going to get this pattern.
As we're making this play food a mitered granny square, I've opted to make it un-stuffed and flat.
What I did with this pattern
1. Work Rounds 1 to 4 in a shade of brown to make the burger bun base.
2. I then changed to off-white, which I’ve used as my border colour.
3. For the top round of the burger bun, I’ve worked Rounds 1 – 4 in the same shade of brown separately, and then attached it on after adding the ‘inside yummy stuff’ ;)
4. For the burger patty, I worked Rounds 1 to 3 using a red-brown yarn.
5. For the square cheese slice, I started with 12 fsc and then worked 12 rows of sc to get a nice square slice of cheese, all in yellow.
6. For the bit of salad, using green : I started with 25 fsc. Turn and work 1 dc in each fsc till end. For the next row, I worked 3 dc in each dc till end. This gives a ruffled strip.
7. Now put all of this together and stitch it down. I basically stitched the pieces only along the centre, so the edges of each piece were all loose and it feels like they will fall out – just like a real burger! ;)
I hope you enjoy your burger and the little toddler that receives this square gets a cute blanket too.
