DO-NUT GRANNY SQUARE
FOOD SERIES - IN THE ROUND - 38

If you have been following my blogs, you’ll know that we’re creating some really cute 9” x 9” squares for Project Chemo Crochet that will go to making blankets for toddler battling cancer.

Do-nuts are among my favourite sugary foods – so when I started on my food series, I knew that I’d have to make this one ;)

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.

All my blogs can be printed.  Find the printer friendly (green) link at the bottom of this blog.  You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.

Remember that you only print if absolutely essential.  Save paper – Save Our Earth.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers.

Thanks for coming along and spreading smiles.

Materials used : Today I’ve used a 4-ply acrylic baby soft yarn with a 4 mm crochet hook ; embroidery needle ; fabric glue to seal ends
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic or  unbranded  knitting cotton as well as Oswal or Vardhaman acrylic yarns

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

For my do-nut granny square, I started with a pattern and then I found this free pattern at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBkm8bOx-gQ

The lovely video gives you a cute little square.  For our donation project though, that square does not suffice – so I have basically combined two patterns to get my end result.

One is this do-nut (starting video), and then I used https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/puppy-dog-granny-afghan-square to get my square to the size I needed.
If the square you are making is exactly what the video shows you, then bye bye for now..

If you are making it a larger square, then do go and take a look at that video and then come along back here to see what I’ve done.

Once again, thank you Ashleigh for your lovely video, and Rhonda for your cute puppy dog pattern… and here’s how I’ve combined the two patterns.

Start Round 1 : (with a dough color - in brown)
with ch 10.
Turn and sl-st in the 10th ch.
Work 12 dc in that ch-10 circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (12)

Like Ashleigh says, we are not using a magic circle here as we want it to be a fixed circle.

Round 2 : dc in the 1st dc and in each dc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (24)

Now we will work Rounds 3 & 4 using the same brown dough color yarn using the pattern from https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/puppy-dog-granny-afghan-square till we have a total of 48 sts.

At this point, we have a large enough do-nut, so while we will still continue with the puppy dog granny afghan square pattern, we will change yarn colour to whatever colour you want for the rest of your square.

For the icing drizzle : I’ve used the same idea / pattern that Ashleigh has shown on her video for the drizzle.  The only thing I changed was that as our square is larger, I used a combination of sl-st, sc, hdc, dc and trc as I worked around the circle.  I also did not do it as evenly as on the video, just for kicks.  So I just played with the stitches, and did not really think the stitches through.  Even if you are making more than one do-nut square, I think it does not matter if your icing drizzles differ – but see what works best for you.

For the sprinkles : I did as suggested by the designer  - a tapestry needle and stitches over the drizzle worked for me just great.

I hope you enjoy making this tasty sweet morsel – I loved it and feel I need this sugar rush just now ;)

Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.
