CATERPILLAR
MOTIF
STATIONERY
CLIP MOTIFS 6
I
started with motifs for Project Chemo Crochet and then was asked to make a
range of motifs for an “under the sea” party which lead to this set of motifs
of stationery clips … what a fun creative journey this has been!

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
I
have been unable to find a pattern for a caterpillar – so decided to write one
up.
Our
caterpillar is made up of a set of rounds – as many as you like for the body
and one for the head.
Part 1 : Head
Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro
Half Double Crochet : Hdc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps. One hdc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg
Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8
Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and 9 hdc in it.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 2 :
2 hdc in the 1st hdc and in each hdc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Head
done. Fasten off and leave a tail for
attachment.
Part 2 : Antennae
We
will now work two tiny antennae on top of the caterpillar head.
Attach whatever yarn you want for the
antennae in any stitch.
It does not matter where you work the first antenna, so join anywhere.
What is a chain stitch ? Here is an easy video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXx5ukBjKkY
Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps. One sc made. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k
First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M
Start with ch
5, 3 sc in the 2nd ch from hk ;
sl-st in the next 3 ch ;
sl-st in
the same st on the body that you started from.
First antenna done.
sl-st
into the next 3 sts, work the same pattern for the 2nd tiny little
antennae.
Fasten
off and weave in ends.
Part 3 : Body
Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and 6 sc in it.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 2 :
2 sc in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Fasten
off and leave a tail for attachment.
Part 4 : Feet
We
will now work two tiny feet.
Attach
whatever yarn you want for the feet in any stitch.
Start with ch
3, sl-st in the 2nd ch from hk ;
sc in the next ch ;
sl-st in the
same st on the body that you started from.
One foot done.
sl-st
into the next st, and now once again work the same pattern for the 2nd tiny little
foot.
Fasten
off and weave in ends.
Make
as many rounds as you’d like for your body using the same basic pattern.
Finishing :
Attach
the round body bits first and then attach it to the head.
Using
an embroidery needle add in a tiny little mouth and mouth.
Use beads or the French knot stitch for the eyes
