The beauty of this pattern is that you can make it not just to any size, but to any width as well.

My headband is about 2.5” wide.

We work this pattern along the length (i.e head circumference) – so your first row will be the round head measure.  I think the advantage with this pattern is that it gives a great stretch to your headband.  Pay attention to your yarn stretch and check your tension (looseness or tightness of work) after two rounds.

Our stitch count is in multiples of 3.

Start : with fsc in multiples of 3 (as many as needed for head circumference).  Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

You can work this pattern using sc / hdc or dc.  Depending on the length of your stitch, your work will look ‘tight’ or loose and lacy.  I have worked in hdc, and will write the pattern that way.
This pattern is also called the moss stitch or the granite moss stitch.

Row 1 : hdc in the 1st st ;
(ch 1, sk next fsc ; hdc in the next fsc) ;
rep (to) till end ; ch 1, and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Row 2 : ch 2, sk next hdc ; hdc in the next ch-1 sp;
(ch 1, sk next hdc ; hdc in the next ch-1 sp) ;

rep (to) till end.  Turn

Once again, we will sk all the hdc all around, and work only in the ch-1 sps.
Row 3 : hdc in the 1st st ;
(ch 1, sk next hdc ; hdc in the next ch-1 sp) ;

rep (to) till end.  Turn.

Rep Rows 2 and 3 till you have a width you are happy with.
Now to get the pattern even on both sides, what I have done is work only half the width that I want on one side – so for a total finished width of say 4”, I would turn at around 2” (the 2” including the border which is the last row given just below).  I then would go back to that 1st fsc row and repeat instructions for the other side.  The first fsc row then gets embedded in the middle and the pattern is even on both sides.

The last row that you will work on for this end is the border row.
Last border row : sc in the 1st st ;
(sk next st , 3 dc in the next st ; sk next st , sc in the next st) ;
rep (to) till the end and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

If you want a larger / fuller shell, then work 5 dc instead of 3 dc.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing : Keeping your headband flat,  join the two ends of your headband neatly.

1. Hat circumference = measure around the head just above ears and subtract one inch for a nicely fitted finished hat.
2. Crown width = (this is a flat circular top of the hat) you need to divide hat circumference by 3.14 (pi).
3. Hat height = Head circumference / 10 x 4.

So you need to measure circumference of the head (round head measurement) and keep checking the outer circumference of your work.
There is another trick for measuring circumference (without running your measure tape all around the edge of your circle as you are working).
This works for a cap that you are working top down, from the crown of the head.
It works by dividing your round head measure by pi (3.14).
So say your head measurement is 22, divide 22 by 3.14 = 7.
Remember when calculating diameter, you must account for the stretch of your yarn too.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
Block as per yarn requirement, if needed.
