SHELLED CAP

Sweet Nothings Crochet free pattern, Crochet shelled cap, free pattern for a crochet shelled cap for girls,

SHELLED CAP

This is a pretty easy two row repeat pattern and can be easily done with one skein of yarn .. and in half a day!
This is my own pattern as I was asked to make a warm cap for a baby that looked pretty but was warm too. I found that most patterns that looked pretty had more ‘holes’ and I thought they would not give as much ‘warmth’ – so I decided to work something with as few holey bits as I could.

Instructions using U.S terminology
For today’s shelled cap, we’ll start at the base of the cap (the part that goes around the forehead) and work our way up to the crown of the cap.
You can make this to any size, using any yarn with a suitable hook.  I've made it in two sizes here, as you can see.

Sweet Nothings Crochet free pattern, Crochet shelled cap, free pattern for a crochet shelled cap for girls,

We work in rounds all the way from the start and create a ‘rectangle or cylinder’ of sorts.  We will then work a row of running stitch all around the top to pull it lightly together to seal the top opening and create our cap.

Get the video for this creation at https://youtu.be/MxXa1AhX0hE

Our stitch count is in multiples of 4.

As we’re starting with the cap from around forehead, your round measure will be the around forehead circumference.  Do check the chart at the top of this blog for general head size.

Remember that each yarn and your work tension give a certain stretch and you should account for that stretch when you work your calculations.
So say you want to work a 22” circumference, you may need only to start with a 20” row length and the last 2” will be covered by the yarn stretch.  Got it?

Right then.. onwards..
Sweet Nothings Crochet free pattern, Crochet shelled cap, free pattern for a crochet shelled cap for girls,

Start Round 1 : with as many fsc as you need in multiples of 4 for the head circumference.  Holding the fsc chain flat, join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Check out this video on how to keep your chain flat without twisting when working with a longer chain length

Round 2 : sc in the 1st fsc ;
(sk next fsc, 4 dc in the next fsc ; sk next fsc, sc in the next fsc) ;
rep (to) till the end and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

In the following round, we will work our sc in the space between 2 dc.
So you will skip 2 dc of each 4-dc set, and work the sc in the space between the 2nd and 3rd dc.
Sweet Nothings Crochet free pattern, Crochet shelled cap, free pattern for a crochet shelled cap for girls,

Round 3 : 4 dc in the 1st sc ;
(sk next 2 dc, sc in the sp between the 2nd and 3rd  dc ; sk next 2 dc, 4 dc in the next sc) ;
rep (to) till the end and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

In this round you need to first get to the space between the 2nd and 3rd dc.  So you can work a sl-st till the 2nd dc , or you can just work a large chain (turning chain) and get to the space you need to be in.. got it?

Round 4 : sc in the sp between the 2nd and 3rd dc ;
(sk next 2 dc, 4 dc in the next sc ; sk next 2 dc, sc in the sp between the 2nd and 3rd dc) ;
rep (to) till the end and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

..and that’s it.. Our pattern done.

Rep Rounds 3 & 4 till you have the height you need for your cap.

Fasten off and leave a tail for joining.

Finishing :
Our main finishing for this cap is to join the gaping hole that will be the top of your cap.  So thread your embroidery needle up with the yarn you left for joining, and run a running stitch (just basically in and out through the stitches on that very top row) through the whole round of stitches.  Pull lightly to close the opening.  Then work a few rounds of stitches all around again to ensure that you have it all neatly closed and finished.

Do remember to go back to the 1st fsc row and neatly weave in the yarn there as well.

This was a neat and quick creation as promised, wasn’t it?

Hope you had a fun creative day today.  Do join me again tomorrow for another fun crochet session.  Byeee!
