VAADA SLOUCH
VAADA SLOUCH
My
Vaada slouch has been inspired by the one worn by Rachel McAdams in the last
frame of the movie The Vow.
“Vaada” means ‘Vow’ in Hindi, and I vow to make
this an easy pattern for you to follow[वादा(vada, vaadaa, wada)]

Materials used:Today I’ve used about 60 gms of (Indian) Vardhaman D.K ply acrylic yarn with a 4.5
mm (US 7) crochet hook
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.
Skill Level : Advanced beginner / Intermediate
You
need to know how to work with two colours and decrease stitches.
Materials used : Today I’ve used some soft Indian Ganga Spectrum acrylic yarn with a 4.5 mm crochet hook
General yarn info : Today’s yarn is not specific for this pattern.
Use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
dc : Double Crochet : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo
Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern. For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
Part
1 : We work a band that will go around the forehead.
This
is worked side to side and is a long rectangle band.
Part
2 : We work along one of the edges of the band we’ve made and then work in
rounds to form the top of the slouchy , from forehead to the crown of head.
I
use ch 1 as a turning chain to start my rows, for ease to access that first
stitch.
Size :Instructions given for circumference of 20” /
21” & 22” ; but easily variable. ‘Forehead
band width’ = 4” x full length = 15 ½”
One
of your yarns will be MC and the other will be CC
Part I :
Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : To refresh your skill on the fsc, please view this video https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA
Start :
with MC and with 15 fsc.Turn.
Single crochet back loop only (sc-blo) : Here is an easy video tutorial
This
video will show you how to work the sc-blo using two colours of yarn.In case it does not come on, go to https://youtu.be/2ZVW776qcLk
Row 2 :with MC : sc in 1st sc ;
sc-blo
in the next sc and in each st till the last sc ;
sc
in the last sc.Turn.(15 sc)
Row 3 :with CC : sc in 1st sc ;
sc-blo
in the next sc and in each st till the last sc ;
sc
in the last sc.Turn.
Rep
Rows 2 and 3 (35, 38, 41) times for circumference of 20”, 21” or 22”.
The
number of rows will depend on the yarn and hook you are using as well as your
work tension.
Just
ensure that when you finish the band fits easily around your forehead and that
you have rows in multiples of 6 and your MC and CC rows are alternate.
Fasten
off leaving a tail for attachment.
Fold
your band and sew in the two shorter ends.
Whipstitch to join : Here’s a quick tutorial on how to join using the whipstitch at https://youtu.be/wZ-9LNzftMA
Invisible join : Here’s a quick tutorial on how to join using the embroidery needle and whipstitch to get an invisible join at https://youtu.be/a6XZQ6VzJFM
Single crochet to join : Here’s a quick tutorial on how to join using the single crochet at https://youtu.be/6FXoW_47_dI
Part II :
Re-attach
your MC yarn to the joint at one end of the band.
For
the top part of our slouchy we will work the Linen stitch, alternating colours
every round.
This
video will show you how to work the Linen stitch using two colours of
yarn.In case it does not come on, go to
https://youtu.be/-nfw19DeOjU
Round 1 :
With MC :
sc in 1st st ; sc
in each st around the band.
Join
with sl-st to 1st st. Turn.(72,
78, 84 sc)
Note
:
It does not matter if you do not get the same number of sc as given in
parenthesis / brackets.Remember though
that you need to have an end number in multiples of 6
We
turn at the end of each round.
Round 2 :With CC :
sc in the 1st st ;
*ch
1, sk next sc, sc in next sc* ;
rep
* to* till last st.
Join
with sl-st to 1st st. Turn.
Round 3 :With MC :
sc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
*ch
1, sk next st, sc in ch-1 sp*;
rep
* to* till last st ;
Join
with sl-st to 1st st. Turn.
Round 4 :With CC :
sc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
*ch
1, sk next st, sc in ch-1 sp*;
rep
* to* till last st ;
Join
with sl-st to 1st st. Turn.
Rep
Rows 3 & 4 till your project reaches 4”, 4 ½”or 5” in length, from the
start of Part II (or the length you desire).
We
will now start reducing the slouch till we reach 24 sts.
As
you may have seen, our start count is a multiple of 6 , so we will reduce 12
sts in each decrease round.
Now
we have worked the Linen st which means that every alternate stitch is a ch-sp
and every other st is a sc.
When
we decrease, we will decrease with a sc 2-tog over a sc and a ch-sp.
To
avoid confusion, both the sc and the ch-sp will be referred to as sts
For
convenience, go around your slouch, and mark every 12th st (it may
be a sc or a ch-sp), so you will have (6, 7, 8 markers).Placing markers makes it easier to decrease
stitches.Ensure that you move your
marker every round.
Single crochet 2-together : sc 2-tog :
Insert
hk into st, yo and pull up a lp (2 lps on hk) ; insert hk into next sc, yo and
pull up a lp (3 lps on hk); yo and draw through all 3 lps.One sc 2-tog complete.Visit this video tutorial at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whlsMemDHLc
Decrease row idea :With CC :
sc 2-tog over the 1st 2 sts ;
(sc
in ch-1 sp ; ch 1, sk next st,) ;
rep
( to) till marked st ;
*sc
2-tog over next 2 sts ;
rep
(to) till next marked st* ;
rep
*to*all around.
Join
with sl-st to 1st st. Turn.(6 sts reduced)
Next row :
With MC :
Rep Row 3 (no decrease)
Rep
above two rows till you have 12 sc (i.e. 12 sc plus 12 ch-1 sps = 24 sts)
Fasten
off, leaving a long tail.
Weave
the tail yarn through each st loosely all around the top opening, lightly pull
and seal.
Fasten
off again. Weave in ends.
Block
as per yarn instructions.
