Today with our alphabet “I”, we’re working on a pair of ice skates, an igloo and an ice cream cone.. yummm.  Come along, let’s see what we can do with this set.

Materials used : Today I’ve used our lovely Oswal 4-ply acrylic yarn with a 3.5 mm crochet hook
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic or  unbranded  knitting cotton as well as Vardhaman acrylic yarns

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Stitches used :
Starting slip knot : Here’s how you start with a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/lJcqsVcs8cw

Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : This is a neat new way to start your work without a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs

Abbreviations used :
sc : single crochet            dc : Double crochet
ch : chain                          ch-sp : chain space
sp : space                         rep : Repeat
hk : hook                           lp (s) : loop(s)
yo : yarn over                    sl-st : slip stitch

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.  For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

The igloo will be made in two parts – one semicircle for the main housing unit and one smaller semicircle for the igloo opening.

Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro

What is a slip stitch : Here is a neat video tutorial at https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Start Round 1 : (Using white yarn) :
with a magic circle and work 12 dc in it.
Pull lightly to close but do not join.
You should have a semicircle finish

Row 2 : 2 dc in the 1st dc and in each dc till end.  Turn.

Row 3 : dc in the 1st 2 dc ; 2 dc in the next dc ;
(dc in the next dc ; 2 dc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) till the last 2 dc,
dc in each dc till end.  Turn.

Triple Crochet : trc : wrap yarn twice around hook, insert hk into st ; yo (4 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] three times.  One trc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/A0y4BbgDTbs

Row 4 : dc in the 1st 5 dc ;
2 trc in each of the next 5 sts ;
trc in the next 5 sts ; 2 trc in each of the next 5 sts ;
dc in each dc till end.

Do not turn, but continue down the straight end of the semicircle and work scs neatly all the way till the end.

Now remember the thumb rule, work 2 sc along each horizontal bar of the dcs to get a total of 17 sc.

Foundation double crochet (fdc) : This is a unique way of starting a project directly with a row of double crochet stitches.  Here is an easy video tutorial https://youtu.be/hjNUYVvyU9k

For the front opening of the igloo work 12 fdc.
Fasten off leaving a long tail.
Attach this along the first row of the igloo base and you have a part 3D igloo all ready.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing :
Using an embroidery needle, embroider in the ice bricks.

Have fun – create something unique.
