Materials used : I have used an Indian polyester silk purse thread , with a 4 mm crochet hook ; a small hoop (approx 3").
Optional : beads and if making this into a dream catcher, then you need feathers.
In general : This particular yarn is available only in India.  However, it is not specific to the pattern and you can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this pattern.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

I found this cute pattern for a double snowflake dream catcher that looked superb.. but I struggled with the pattern.  If this works for you, visit

Meanwhile, I found another chart and here’s my take on a snowflake motif.

Feel free to attach beads anywhere and everywhere.. especially if making this a dream catcher.  Check the top of this blog on  ‘how to work with beads’

Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro

What is a slip stitch : Here is a neat video tutorial at https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

Start Round 1 :  with a magic circle and 10 sc in it.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

We’re working a dc 2-tog in the following round.

Double crochet 2-tog : dc 2-tog :  [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;
{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 2 times.  One dc 2-tog made.
This video tutorial at https://youtu.be/1_oPlUfN5eg shows you how to use the dc 2-tog to decrease.
Sometimes we work the dc 2-tog in the same stitch, to use as a decorative stitch. Visit this video tutorial at https://youtu.be/lLUXOJ1sY9w

Round 2 :  dc 2-tog in the 1st st ;
dc 2-tog in the next st ;
(ch 5, dc 2-tog in the next 2 sts) ;
rep (to) all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 3 :  sl-st into the 1st ch-5 sp , 9 sc in the same 1st ch-5 sp
 (sk next 2 sc, 9 sc in the next ch-5 sp) ;
rep (to) all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

From now on, we will work one ‘petal’ of our snowflake at a time.
So at the end of every row we will turn.
Once we finish this ‘petal’, we will slide over to the next one and repeat it.

Row 4 :  sc in the 1st sc ;
ch 3, sk next sc, sc in the next sc ;
(ch 3, sk next  sc, sc in the next sc) ;
rep (to) 2 times.  Turn.

Row 5 :  sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp , sc in the same 1st ch-3 sp ;
(ch 3, sc in the next ch-3 sp) ;
rep (to) 2 times.  Turn.

Row 5 :  sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp , sc in the same 1st ch-3 sp ;
(ch 3, sc in the next ch-3 sp) ;
rep (to) once.  Turn.

Row 6 :  sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp , sc in the same 1st ch-3 sp ;
(ch 3, sc in the next ch-3 sp).  Turn.

We’ve completed one ‘petal’ of our snowflake.
Now sl-st all the way down to Round 3, along the side of this petal we’ve just made.  Then rep Rows 4 – 6 for the remaining 4 petals too.
Once you’ve done that , return for the last clean up border round.

Before we head off for the border, let me explain it – as its a really tiny border.
So we’ve worked 4 rows for our tiny little pineapple petal, right?  You will work 2 sc + picot per row along the side for the 1st 3, then 1 set of 2 sc + picot on that top ch-3 sp, and then head down the other side of the same pineapple and work along the 3 rows of the side.  At this point, you will skip right onto the next ‘petal’ and repeat what you did in this first petal.  Got it?

So we will work continuously around the whole snowflake now.

How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook).  For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).
Here’s a great video https://youtu.be/8s3zVaBcn4s

Let’s work a ch-3 picot which is (ch 3, sl-st in the 3rd ch from hk)

Border Round 7 :  2 sc + picot in the 1st row (side of Row 4) ;
[2 sc +picot in the next row] ;
rep [to] once ;
2 sc + picot in the top ch-3 sp ;
(and now working down the other side), rep [to] 3 times ;
*sl-st into the 1st st on the side of the next ‘petal’ ,
rep [to] 3 times ;
2 sc + picot in the top ch-3 sp ;
rep [to] 3 times* ;
rep *to* all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

If you are making this a motif, yaay, you’re done.

If you are making this into a sun catcher, then you need to attach it to a round hoop.

First work a set of sc all around your in multiples of 5

It does not matter how many sc you have as long as you have the multiples right.
Once done, count off 5 equally distanced spaces.

What does this mean – say you have 100 sc all around your hoop, you will place 5 markers 20 sts apart – so you get 5 points (exactly like our 5-pointed snowflake motif).

Now go ahead and attach your motif to the hoop at these points.
In case you have a hoop that is larger than the motif (recommended), then you attach it to the points and have it nicely stretched.
In case your hoop is smaller (like mine) then you attach it along the centre of each ‘petal’.
It does not matter where you attach, as long as it is evenly attached.

You can make this into a dream catcher too - just need to add in the long bits of dangling feathers or yarn with beads to finish it off.

This tiny motif will also make a beautiful blanket - make individual motifs and join them along as you work - of course for a blanket you won't use beads.

Oh, and I think this will make a lovely motif top as well - a small bit of trial and error and I am sure you can figure this out.
