FLOWERY KEYCHAIN

If you have been following my blogs, you’ll know that I have made several keychains and several flowers – and you’ll also know that I try to make each project different – even if slightly so.
So here’s my beautiful puffy flowery keychain in five simple rounds.

Materials used : Today I’ve used (Indian) polyester silk thread with a 2.5 mm crochet hook ; keyring
If you need beads etc check here or here or here
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros or unbranded knitting cotton as well

With this project, the thinner the yarn, the smaller the end result.  So, yarn choice does not matter.
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Instruction information
Please note that I start all rows with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please also check the top of this blog for neat video tutorials of all stitches used in today’s pattern sheet.

Here is a video tutorial for the flower motif.

Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

What is a slip stitch : Here is a neat video tutorial at https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and work 8 sc in it.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.  (8 sts)

Round 2 : 2 sc in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.  (16 sts)

In the following round, we're using a dc 3-tog.  If you are using a thicker yarn, see if dc 2-tog works for you.

Double crochet 2-tog : dc 2-tog :  [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;
{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 2 times.  One dc 2-tog made.
This video tutorial at https://youtu.be/1_oPlUfN5eg shows you how to use the dc 2-tog to decrease.
Sometimes we work the dc 2-tog in the same stitch, to use as a decorative stitch.
Visit this video tutorial at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCQOBc83Vxo

Double crochet 3-tog : dc 3-tog :   Here is an easy video tutorial at https://youtu.be/qlnqXDB3OUM

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

What is a chain stitch ? Here is an easy video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXx5ukBjKkY

Round 3 : [ch 2 + dc 3 tog + ch 2] all in 1st sc ;
sc in the next sc ;
*rep [to] in the next sc ;
sc in the next sc* ;
rep *to* 6 times.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.  (8 petals)

This is a cute little flower, and you can stop right here as well.
The next row of petals are worked under this round of petals and that’s what makes this a slightly difficult pattern.

Round 4 : working under petal : sc in the 1st sc of Round 3 ;
*ch 3 (from behind petal , sk the petal and sc into next sc of Round 3)*;
rep *to* all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st (8 ch-3 sps behind the first row of petals)

In our final round, we will work a picot stitch.  You can work either a ch-3 or ch-5 picot, depending on the thickness of yarn. (Thicker the yarn, smaller the picot you’d want to use)

How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook).  For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).
In case the video doesn't come on, go to  https://youtu.be/8s3zVaBcn4s
Round 5 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ;
(sc + ch 2 + dc 3-tog + picot + ch 2 + sc in same ch-3 sp) ;
*sl-st into next ch-3 sp ; rep (to)* ;
rep *to* 6 times and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Finishing :
In case you are making this into a flower motif, fasten off and leave a tail for attachment.

In case you are making this into a keychain, join at the end of Round 5, and then work in a long chain for the length you want for your dangly keychain and attach it to the keychain ring.  Remember the number of chain you are working on one side to mirror when you work back to the flower motif.

If you would like to add more beads (as I have), then you will attach the beads on just after you attach your long chain length to the key chain ring.
Of course, you could also attach the beads on a separate chain and string that alongside too.
This is not an exact science, it is creativity.. so go ahead and create something unique and beautiful.

If you wish to add a bead in the centre, you could do it in two ways.
a)   Start with a longish tail and after you finish off your work, thread the bead into this start yarn and fasten it in the centre.  This is the easier and neater way ; OR
b)   Add the bead onto a thread after you are done with your work and thread it into that centre hole of your magic circle.
