Materials used : Just
a little bit of the lovely Indian Oswal Cashmilon acrylic yarn, a little bit of
white fun fur yarn, with a 3 mm crochet hook.
You can make this project with any yarn
and a hook that suits it.
You do not need fun fur – I had it handy but any
white yarn will work.
Skill level : Easy
Stitches used :
Starting slip knot : Here’s how you start with a slip knot. https://youtu.be/lJcqsVcs8cw
Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : This is a neat new way to start your work without a slip knot. https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs
Abbreviations used :
(Using U.S terminology)
lp(s) : Loop(s)
sc
: Single crochet
dc : Double crochet sp
: Space
sl-st : Slip stitch ch : Chain
st(s) : Stitch(es) hk : Hook
yo : Yarn Over
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern. For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
Today we’ll
make a really easy mug hug in pink and white yarn – so it’s a strawberry and
cream theme. To reinforce the theme,
make a strawberry motif (optional)
What measurements
do we need?
1.
This
pattern is worked side to side along the length (i.e bottom to top) of
your mug.
2. Measure your mug and figure out what approx
length and width you’d like. Remember that you need to leave a little space on
top – no one wants to sip over yarn and have bits of yarn in their mouth along
with whatever they are drinking J
3. I have worked my cozy with an open back – so
that it allowed the mug handle space. Right on top we will work in a button
with loop that loops under the mug handle and secures the hug to the mug.
4. In case you want to make this into a wine bottle cover, once again, you will need the length (bottom to top) measure as well as round measure.
Now you need to
decide which stitch you are using. You
can work the whole thing in either sc or hdc, depending on the thickness of
your yarn / hook and how fast you want to finish the project.
We will be
working with sc-blo or hdc-blo through most of our work. Please check the top of this blog for a “how
to”
As each of us will
be working with different sizes of mug/ yarn and hook, I will give a
generalised set of instructions that are really easy to follow.
Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : To refresh your skill on the fsc, please view this video https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA
Start Row 1 (Using pink yarn) :
with fsc and as many fsc
as you need for the length / height (i.e from bottom to top) of your mug/bottle. Turn.
Here’s where
you decide if you are working sc-blo or hdc-blo in each st.
I have worked
sc-blo.
Single crochet back loop only (sc-blo) : Here is an easy video tutorial
Row 2 (Using pink yarn) :
sc-blo in the 1st fsc and
in each fsc till end. Turn.
Row 3 (Using pink yarn) :
sc-blo in the 1st sc and
in each sc till end. Turn.
Rep Row 3 using
pink yarn till you have completed nearly ¾ ths of the way around your mug.
Change to white
yarn. Fasten off pink yarn.
In case you are
using fun fur, then it is thick enough to work just a sc (or hdc, if you have worked hdc so far) in
each st and not worry about working in back loops.
For
convenience, I am calling our next row Row 4, though it is obviously not the
4th row
Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps. One sc made. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k
First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M
Row 4 (Using white fun
fur yarn) :
sc in the 1st sc and in each sc till end. Turn.
Rep Row 4 using
white fun fur yarn till you have completely gone around your mug. You now have a rectangle with ¾th worked in
pink and 1/4th worked in white.
Before you fasten off white, join the 1st 2 rows from
the bottom (it does not matter which is bottom.. wherever you finish.. join
there) and then sl-st all the way to the top.
At the top, before you fasten off make a button loop. So find which button you are using for the
top here, affix the button on the pink portion and work the loop in white.
In case you are making this into a bottle cover, you can do what is written above, or just join the pink and white sections if the round measure (for the length you are making it for) is the same. Anyway, there is a small amount of stretch that the yarn will give you and it will be snug against your bottle. So don't worry too much.
Fasten off and
weave in all ends.
