MY
YIN-YAN MOTIF 2
Just yesterday I made my first yin yang ear ring, and I immediately got a request for another one..so here we go.
Yup, I know this is not the ‘traditional
yin-yan’.. but I have creative leeway to call it such. Now let’s see how many ways you can use
it.
Thank you for joining me.

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.
General yarn info : Today’s yarns are available only in
India, but they’re just really light yarns and the kankri yarn is something
like embroidery floss. The finer the
yarn, the thinner each petal, and the cuter the end result – so go ahead and
use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
Skill level : Advanced
Abbreviations used : (Using U.S terminology)
lp(s) : Loop(s) hk : Hook
dc : Double crochet sp : Space
sl-st : Slip stitch ch : Chain
st(s) : Stitch(es)
yo : Yarn Over
Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps. One sc made. Check out the video at
https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k
Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.
Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern. For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
I
am going to make a pair of ear rings and so I plan on working to make this a
smaller motif. I am going to write the
motif as charted or photographed and then probably tweak it to get it a bit
smaller.
For
this motif, we need to use two colours.
I am not going to specify colours – just C1 (Colour 1) or C2 (Colour 2)
The
numbering for this pattern is a little skewed.
The
actual pattern for each little circle is only 2 rounds and then a border, but
as we are working with 2 colours, and for convenience of which color goes
where, I’ve made it a 5-round instruction.
Start Round 1 : (Using C 1) : with a magic circle and 28 dc in
it.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 2 :
(Using C1) : dc in the 1st dc ;
(ch
1, dc in the next dc) ;
rep
(to) 12 times ; ch 3, and leave C1 yarn ; remove hook.
Now
we will work with our 2nd colour (C2) and start with a circle
directly into the C1 circle.
Round 3 :
(Using C2) : ch 14 into Round 1 of the C1 circle. Keeping your chain straight,
pass this ch-14 through the centre hole of your C1 circle, and join with
a sl-st to the 1st st of your C2 circle.
Round 4 :
(Using C2) : work 28 dc into the C2 ch-14 circle. Join with a sl-st to the 1st
st of C2 round.
In
the following round we will join our 2nd circle (using the C2
colour) with the 2nd circle of C1, and then continue on to make half
a border in C2. We will then switch
colours and work with our C1 yarn to finish off the last bit of the border.
We
will work a ch-3 picot along our border round, which is (ch 3, sl-st in the 3rd
ch from hk).
Round 5 :
(Using C2) : dc in the 1st dc ;
(ch
1, dc in the next dc) ;
rep
(to) 12 times ; ch 2, and join to the 1st dc of Round 2 with C1 ;
and
continue with border using C2 :
dc
+ picot in the 1st dc (of Round 2 that has the C1 yarn) ;
[ch
1, sk next dc, dc + picot in the next ch-1 sp] :
rep
[to] 11 times ; leave C2 yarn.
We
will come back to join this to the 1st st we are going to work in C1
colour.
Pick
up the C1 yarn where you left it at the end of Round 2. We will now work the same border along the C2
circle. Simple enough, right? ;)
Round 6 :
(Using C1) : dc + picot in the 1st dc (of Round 2 that has the C2
yarn) ;
[ch
1, sk next dc, dc + picot in the next ch-1 sp] :
rep
[to] 11 times ; Join to the 1st st of C2 yarn.
Go
back to where you left the C2 yarn, and attach it to the 1st st of
this Round 5, (where you started with the C1 yarn).
One
cute yin-yan motif done.
As
I wanted a smaller motif, I just made my stitches smaller – as I have done for
so many of my motifs before this.
So
I worked a hdc all through this pattern and it worked for me.
Finishing :
To
make this into a pair of ear rings : Attach yarn to the centre of the
two motifs and attach that yarn to the hook of your ear ring.
To
make this into a pendant : Attach a little pendant hook onto the centre of
the motif and slip it neatly into a necklace chain.
