HOOP EAR RING 4

I’ve been on a mad ear ring spree.. just making motifs and stringing them into ear ring hooks
With many of my earlier ear rings, while we worked with a hoop, we worked either inside it with a tiny doily or just outside.  With this creation, there is the hoop and then there are dangling beads.  Beads show off our creativity, so be adventurous.

Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Materials used : Today I’ve used our lovely Anchor pearl cotton thread as well as some Indian kankri / kamal kadai polyester silk yarn with a 1.3 mm crochet hook ; rings ; ready-made ear ring hooks (one pair minimum) ; beads, if needed ; glue to seal ends.
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros or unbranded knitting cotton as well

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

General yarn info : The kankri / kamal kadai thread is available only in India.
It is not specific for the pattern.
For this project, the finer the yarn, the cuter the end result – so go ahead and use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

This pattern has a chart but no explanation in writing.  I have tried to decipher the chart and here are my notes as I work on my own creation.

I think the chart indicates two (hoop) ring sizes for a 25 mm and a 30 mm.  If you have one of these sizes and can read the chart, go straight to this chart below now.

Here’s what I suggest so that we can work it with any yarn with a suitable hook and any sized hoop.
For the smaller sized hoop, the actual centre pattern is worked over 24 sts and for the larger hoop, it is worked over 29 sts.

So work with any sized hoop, and either copy the 25-st or 29-st pattern OR just take even number of sts off both sides to get your own neat pattern.

Start Round 1 : with working as many sc as you’d like around your hoop.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Now remember to push your stitches back and fill in as many stitches as you can into that hoop.  Make it nice and tight – and do not let the hoop show through at all.

Now count the stitches around your hoop and mark the centre stitch.  If you are working the 25-st pattern, you need to have a total of 25 sts – so 12 sts off on both sides. Place new markers for each side point.

Similarly for the 29-st pattern, you need to have a total of 29 sts – so 14 sts off on both sides.  Place markers for side points.

Our pattern instructions will read from 1st marker to 2nd marker.

For the 25-st pattern :

Row 2 : sl-st till Marker # 1 ; sc in the 1st 7 sts ;
hdc in the next 4 sts ; dc in the next 3 sts ; hdc in the next 4 sts ;
sc in the last 7 sts till Marker # 2.  Turn.

In our next and last row, we will work a ch-3 picot which is (ch 3, sl-st in the 3rd ch from hk).  Now you can decide to work in a picot and then add the little bit of bling off this, or just work the picot or just add bling.. so many choices means so many pieces of jewelry created.  Go for it!

How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook).  For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).
Here’s a great video https://youtu.be/8s3zVaBcn4s

Row 3 : sl-st in the 1st 2 sts ;
(sc + picot in the next st ; sc in the next st) ;
rep (to) till last 2 sts ;
leave last 2 sts unworked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

For the 29-st pattern :

Row 2A : sl-st till Marker # 1 ; sc in the 1st 8 sts ;
hdc in the next 5 sts ; dc in the next 3 sts ; hdc in the next 5 sts ;
sc in the last 8 sts till Marker # 2.  Turn.

Row 3A : sl-st in the 1st 2 sts ;
(sc + picot in the next st ; sc in the next st) ;
rep (to) till last 2 sts ;
leave last 2 sts unworked.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
