FRANGIPANI NECK KERCHIEF

Just a few days back, I made this beautiful frangipani shawl for a lovely old lady on her 92nd birthday.  While working on the shawl, I thought (and mentioned) it would look lovely as a smaller project too.
So I went ahead and tried it out…and here’s the frangipani neck kerchief.

This is my original pattern
We are using the same pattern as we did for the shawl. Come along, let’s create something beautiful together.

Materials used :Today I’ve used ~ 60 gms of our local Indian Oswal Cashmilon 4-ply acrylic with a 4 mm crochet hook
For Non-IndiansI’d say you can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this lovely project.

Skill level : Advanced

Abbreviations :
sc : Single crochet                   yo : Yarn Over
st(s) : Stitch(es)                        hk : hook
lp(s) : Loop(s)                          dc : Double crochet
sl-st : Slip Stitch
sc-blo : Single Crochet Back Loop Only
fsc : Foundation single crochet
hdc : Half Double crochet

Split dc 4-tog : Split double crochet 4-tog :The split dc 4-tog is basically two sets of dc 2-tog worked over 2 sets of stitches.  For this we will work a dc 2-tog over the 1st set of stitches as indicated, and then work the next half of the dc 4-tog (so another dc 2-tog) over the 2nd set of stitches as indicated.
[yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;
Rep [to] over the next set of sts 2 times (5 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all lps on hk.  One Split dc 4-tog made.

Pattern instructions : (Using U.S terminology)
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog (as well as through the blog) for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.

Before we launch off into the pattern, let us visualize what we are going to create today.

Our shawl is worked bottom up from the centre spine and then worked out.
The whole creation is worked with dc 2-tog, dc 4-tog ; Split dc 4-tog and ch-3 sps to create the floral effect.

Please check the top of this blog for an idea of all these stitches.

For turning convenience, may I suggest that you start all rows with a ch 1 turning chain.
I also suggest that you look at and work the chainless standing dc.  In case you are unable to work that stitch, go ahead and start with ch 2.

For the 1st dc 2-tog (when using the chain start) :
ch 2, yo, insert hk in the same st, yo and pull up a lp  ;
[yo and draw through 2 lps] ; rep [to] once. 1st st complete.

Ok then, let’s get on the road with this pattern, shall we?

Double crochet 2-tog : dc 2-tog :  [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;
{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 2 times.  One dc 2-tog made.
This video tutorial at https://youtu.be/1_oPlUfN5eg shows you how to use the dc 2-tog to decrease.
Sometimes we work the dc 2-tog in the same stitch, to use as a decorative stitch. Visit this video tutorial at https://youtu.be/lLUXOJ1sY9w

Start with ch 3. Turn and work a dc in 3rd ch from hk ;
ch 3, dc 2-tog in same ch (i.e 3rd ch from hk).  Turn.
(2 dc 2-tog, ch 3)

From this row on, we will use our Split dc 4-tog stitch.
Remember all we are doing is working two dc 2-togs over two adjacent stitches.
Got it?

Row 1 : dc 2-tog in the 1st dc 2-tog ;
ch 3, Split dc 4-tog (split over the same 1st dc 2-tog and the next dc 2-tog) ;
ch 3, dc 2-tog in the next dc 2-tog.  Turn.
(two dc 2-tog, one Split dc 4-tog, 2 ch-3 sps)

Row 2 : dc 2-tog in the 1st dc 2-tog ;
ch 3, Split dc 4-tog(split over the same 1st dc 2-tog and the next dc 4-tog) ;
ch 3, Split dc 4-tog split over the same (last) dc 4-tog and the next dc 2-tog ;
ch 3, dc 2-tog in the last dc 2-tog.  Turn.
(two dc 2-tog, two Split dc 4-tog, 3 ch-3 sps)

Row 3 : dc 2-tog in the 1st dc 2-tog ;
ch 3, Split dc 4-tog split over the same 1st dc 2-tog and the next dc 4-tog ;
ch 3, Splitdc 4-tog split over the dc 4-tog (just used), and the next dc 4-tog ;
ch 3, Splitdc 4-tog split over this dc 4-tog (just used) and the last dc 2-tog ;
ch 3, dc 2-tog in the last dc 2-tog.  Turn.
(two dc 2-tog, three Split dc 4-tog, and 4 ch-3 sps)

I am sure you have now got the hang of what we are doing, haven’t you?
And now that you figured it out, you’ll see that it is not that hard after all, is it?

Rep Row 3, increasing one Split dc 4-tog with each rep, till you have a project of the size you desire.
