For our belt, you may decide to use beads.  In case you do, go ahead and add them to your yarn now.
I will not be telling you where to add the beads – that’s your creativity.
I request you to check the links at the top of this blog on how to add beads onto your yarn and work.

Before we head off to the pattern, let’s visualise it.  We will start with a small granny square motif on one side and then work the pattern in between.  Once done we will finish with the 2nd square at the other end.  You can add on tassels and beads as desired.

Part 1 : Granny square pattern :
Start : with ch 6.  Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
We will work a dc 5-tog in the following round.

Double crochet 5-tog as a decrease stitch : dc 5-tog :   Here is an easy video tutorial for working a dc 5-tog over 5 sts at https://youtu.be/Dh2viux_fBA

Double crochet 5-tog as a decorative stitch : dc 5-tog :   Here is an easy video tutorial for working a dc 5-tog all in the same stitch as a decorative stitch at https://youtu.be/5806EIpgcV8

Round 1 : dc 5-tog in the ch-6 sp ;
(ch 3, dc 5-tog in the same ch-6 sp) ;
rep (to) 6 times ;
dc and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

We have worked a dc on that last stitch, so that we are in the centre of that last ch-3 sp.  If this is too confusing for you, work ch-3 and join with a sl-st and then slip into the 1st ch-3 sp for the next bit of pattern.

Assuming you have ended with a dc, let’s continue with the pattern.

Round 2 : 3 dc in the 1st ch-sp (which is the dc you have ended with) ;
[ch 3, 3 dc in the same 1st ch-sp] ;
*2 dc in the next ch-3 sp ; 3 dc in the next ch-3 sp ;
rep [to] once* ;
rep *to* all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

In the final finishing round, we will work 1 sc all around – in each ch-sp and on top of every st
Round 3 : sc in the 1st 3 dc ; 5 dc in the corner ch-3 sp ;
(dc in each dc till the  next corner ; 5 dc in the corner ch-3 sp) ;
rep (to) all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

We’ve completed the motif.
At this point you have two options.
a)   You can sl-st up to the ch-3 corner space and start on the sash pattern.  If you’re starting the sash, sl-st till the centre st of the closest corner sp.  There are 5 sts in your corner, so you will start at the 3rd centre st ; OR
b)   You can add on the tassels.  If adding the tassels, decide how long you want the tassels and then attach 7 tassels (per pattern) in the corner ch-3 sp.  The corner sp has 5 sts, and then you can use the next 2 sts on either side of the ch-3 sp.   That said, you can use as many sts as you want and make the tassels as long and thick as you desire.

  Part 2 : Making this into a sash :

The sash pattern is a tiny leaf like pattern that is worked one ‘leaf’ at a time.  We start with a chain length in multiples of 3 for the length you want for your belt.   We will then work the leaf pattern on both sides of this chain length.  Remember though that you will add that same granny square motif on the other end – so calculate the length with that in mind.

Before we move on, let’s look at the ‘leaf’ st.  You start with a ch-3 and then turn and work a dc 2-tog from the same st or sp that you started that ch-3.  So you are getting a dc 3-tog thickness but worked over (ch 3 + dc 2-tog).  Got it?  We will work this leaf stitch all the way down the required length of belt, and this is one side of the belt.  We will then come back and finish the other side of the belt using the same st, and working in between these leaves that we’re making now.  Easy enough, right?

Start : with either fsc in multiples of 3  or as many chain that you need for the length of your belt in multiples of 3 + 1. Turn

I am writing instructions for starting with fsc.
In case you have started with ch, you will just work in the 4th ch from hk (factoring in that extra ch 1 for turning)

Leaf Row 1 : ch 3 + dc 2-tog in the 1st fsc ;
sk next 2 fsc, sc in the next fsc ;
*ch 3 + dc 2-tog from the same fsc ;
sk next 2 fsc , sc in the next fsc* ;
rep *to* till end.  Turn

Once you have figured out the leaf pattern, the second row is easy as...
We will be repeating the very same pattern all the way down, working in the very same stitches you worked in the first time – so you really don’t need to count the skipping stitches.. you will just skip right through

Leaf Row 2 : Rep Leaf Row 1.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Part 3 : Tassels
Check out these video for tassels  https://youtu.be/Ct84H8iBa9s  &  https://youtu.be/Pt5BMW_OlAg

1)      Decide how long a tassel you’d like.  The tassel also adds to the hanging length of your belt, so keep this in mind.
2)    If adding a bead, do that first and then place a knot on either side of the length of yarn (that will be your tassel) and ensure that the bead is secure and will not slip out (so the knot should be large – maybe a drop of glue at the end will help too)
3)    Once done, loop the folded length of yarn (your tassel) into the centre stitch of your granny square – the centre that is exactly opposite the point that you have worked the belt – and tie the tassel down.
Add as many tassels as you’d like to finish off.
4)    If not using a bead, just knot two ends of the length of yarn and loop through as advised before.
5)    You could also decide to work a chain length and attach it with a sc to the granny square.
