FANNED BEANIE

Fanned Beanie in four sizes

Fanned Beanie - a free crochet pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet
I have been given a small bag of yarn and requested to make beanies & / or scarves for the homeless.  I'm hoping that there's going to b e more yarn - which also means there will be more patterns discovered and written.
Thanks for joining me.  Come along, let’s create something beautiful with this lightly chunky yarn

I made this beanie again using 4-Seasons Dk acrylic yarn and there are four sizes for this creation : New born , 3 - 6 months , 2 - 10 yrs & Adult Beanie. Follow the color coded instructions for your size

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Materials used : Today I’ve used ~ 40 - 75 gms of Basics 8-ply wool with a 4 mm crochet hook  & some MAKR DK double knitting acrylic with a 4 mm hook ;  embroidery needle fabric glue to seal ends ; crochet stitch markers
For Indians The yarn I’ve used is similar in thickness to our Vardhaman /as well as Oswal acrylic yarns or Laura knitting cotton .
You could use Anchor , Red rose , 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns  ; Baby soft acrylic yarn , Ganga Spectrum as well
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, Caron Simply Soft , Bernat Softee chunky.
but I think you could also use Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn
You may just have to tweak the gauge a bit.

What is a slip stitch : https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);

[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

and in each dc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the1st st. (24 dc)

At this point the diameter of my circle is 2.5"
Stop here if you want to make a New born beanie
Go straight to Round 7
A new born Fanned Beanie all done
Round 3 : Increase round
2 dc in the 1st dc, dc in the next dc ;

At this point the diameter of my circle is 5.25"
Stop here if you want to make a beanie for 2 - 10 yrs.
(This will be slightly loose for  a 2-yr old -  so either work tighter stitches, or go a hook down)
Go straight to Round 7
Fanned Beanie 2-10 yrs
If working for Adult Beanie, work this Round 4
Round 4 : Increase round
2 dc in the 1st dc, dc in the next 2 dc ;
(2 dc in the the next dc ; dc in the next 2 dc)  ;
rep (to) all around.

(2 dc in the the next dc ; dc in the next 4 dc)  ;
rep (to) all around.

At this point, I have a diameter of 7".
This gave me a finished circumference of 22" - 24" for an Adult Beanie
Fanned Beanie - Adult size
Let's check  circumference now
To check, you are either going to wear the beanie, or check with the head size chart given at the top of this blog or the headwear calculations at the bottom of the blog.
Remember that yarn stretches - more so with use.

Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;

yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

Our Fan pattern today is (3 dc ; ch 2, 3 dc) all in the same st or ch-sp

For the Newborn , 3 - 6 months & 2 - 10 years
Round 8 : Fan round
sc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
(3 dc ; ch 2, 3 dc) in the next ch-1 sp ;
*sc in the next ch-sp ;
rep (to) in next ch-1 sp* ;
rep *to* all around.
join with a sl-st to the1st st (6 , 9 , 11 fans)

For the Adult Beanie
Round 8 : Fan round
sc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
*sk next ch-1 sp , (3 dc ; ch 2, 3 dc) in the next ch-1 sp ;
sk next ch-1 sp , sc in the next ch-sp* ;
rep *to* all around.
join with a sl-st to the1st st (9 fans)
This is how we work the pattern
This is how we'll work the pattern
This is how it will look when done
..... and this is how it will look
Round 9 :
dc in the 1st st ;
*ch 3, sc in the next ch-2 sp of the next fan ;
 ch 3, dc in next sc* ;
rep *to* all around.
ch 3 & join with a sl-st to the1st st

Round 10 : Fan round
(3 dc ; ch 2, 3 dc) in the 1st dc ;
*sc in the next sc ;
rep (to) in next dc* ;
rep *to* all around.
join with a sl-st to the1st st (6 , 9 fans)

Now we need to work our 1st dc in that same last sc.  So here's what I've done..
Work ch 1, and (turn) and work a dc that last sc. To continue you will turn again.
Oh, I've worked my first dc to start so it gives an even length for all dc.
I found this the easiest way - if you think of any other way do let me know.

Rounds 11 - 18 :
Rep Rounds 9 & 10

In our last round , let's work a picot in the ch-2 sp to finish it up nicely

Picot round detail
Round 19 : Picot round
(3 dc ; ch 1 + picot + ch 1, 3 dc) in the 1st dc ;
*sc in the next sc ;
rep (to) in next dc* ;
rep *to* all around.
join with a sl-st to the1st st (6 , 9 fans with picot)

Easy Headwear calculations
1. Hat circumference = measure around the head just above ears and subtract one inch for a nicely fitted finished hat.
2. Crown width = (this is a flat circular top of the hat) you need to divide hat circumference by 3.14 (pi).
3. Hat height = Head circumference / 10 x 4.

So you need to measure circumference of the head (round head measurement) and keep checking the outer circumference of your work.
There is another trick for measuring circumference (without running your measure tape all around the edge of your circle as you are working).
This works for a cap that you are working top down, from the crown of the head.
It works by dividing your round head measure by pi (3.14).
So say your head measurement is 22, divide 22 by 3.14 = 7.
Remember when calculating diameter, you must account for the stretch of your yarn too.
So once the ‘flat portion’ for the crown (or the first few rounds while you are still increasing) of your cap is 7” diameter, you can stop increases and start increasing just the length (without increasing stitches for the round)

Fasten off and weave in ends.
Block as per yarn requirement, if needed.
