MORNING GLORY BEANIE

MORNING GLORY BEANIE

I have been given a small bag of yarn and requested to make beanies & / or scarves for the homeless.  I'm hoping that there's going to be more yarn - which also means there will be more patterns discovered and written.

Thanks for joining me.  Come along, let’s create something beautiful with this lightly chunky yarn.  I made this beanie again using 4-Seasons Dk acrylic yarn
and there are four sizes for this creation : New born , 3 - 6 months , 2 - 10 yrs & Adult Beanie. Follow the color coded instructions for your size

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Materials used : Today I’ve used ~ 60 gms of (Yatsal) 8-ply Super Value acrylic yarn with a 4 mm crochet hook ; embroidery needle fabric glue to seal ends ; crochet stitch markers
I've also made this pattern again with 4-Seasons DK acrylic (in bottle green) with a 6.5 mm crochet hook

For Indians The yarn I’ve used is similar in thickness to our Vardhaman / as well as Oswal acrylic yarns  or Laura knitting cotton .
The 4-Seasons DK acrylic yarn is twice as thick as our Vardhman/ Oswal/ Laura yarns
You could use Anchor , Red rose , 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns Baby soft acrylic yarn , Ganga Spectrum as well

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, Caron Simply Soft , Bernat Softee chunky.
but I think you could also use Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn
You may just have to tweak the gauge a bit.

Difficulty level : Easy to Intermediate.
If you are working the optional finish, there are calculations and that makes this intermediate - else this is an easy pattern

Stitches used :

Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs
Crab Stitch or Reverse Single Crochet stitch : https://youtu.be/cG3crwyHPnk

Here is a sizing chart for general head sizing :

Abbreviations used :
sc : single crochet            hdc : Half Double crochet
ch : chain                         ch-sp : chain space
sp : space                        rep : Repeat
hk : hook                          lp (s) : loop(s)
yo : yarn over                   sl-st : slip stitch

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rounds with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for video tutorials of all the stitches used in today’s pattern.  For your convenience, I've given the links just before we are to use the stitch as well.
Please note that I take a lot of trouble to give loads of tips through my pattern sheet, so please read through the full sheet before you pick up your hook n yarn.

In my patterns, I make you think .. a little bit.. but trust me, it's always fun..and my instructions are detailed and well explained.

What is a slip stitch : https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);

[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Round 1 : Start with a magic circle and work 12 dc in it ;
join to the 1st st with a sl-st (12 dc)

Round 2 : Increase round
2 dc in the 1st dc
and in each dc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the1st st. (24 dc)

Round 3 : Increase round
2 dc in the 1st dc, dc in the next dc ;
(2 dc in the the next dc ; dc in the next dc)  ;
rep (to) all around.
Join with a sl-st to. the1st st (36 dc)
At this point the diameter of my circle is 3.5"
Stop here if you want to make a New born beanie.  Go straight to Round 7

Round 4 : Increase round
2 dc in the 1st dc, dc in the next 2 dc ;
(2 dc in the the next dc ; dc in the next 2 dc)  ;
rep (to) all around.
Join with a sl-st to. the1st st (48 dc)
At this point the diameter of my circle is 5.25"
Stop here if you want to make a beanie for 3 - 6 months.  Go straight to Round 7

Round 5 : Increase round
2 dc in the 1st dc, dc in the next 3 dc ;
(2 dc in the the next dc ; dc in the next 3 dc)  ;
rep (to) all around.
Join with a sl-st to. the1st st (60 dc)
At this point the diameter of my circle is 6"
Stop here if you want to make a beanie for 2 - 10 yrs.  Go straight to Round 7

Round 6 : Increase round
2 dc in the 1st dc, dc in the next 4 dc ;
(2 dc in the the next dc ; dc in the next 4 dc)  ;
rep (to) all around.
Join with a sl-st to. the1st st (72 dc)

At this point, I have a diameter of 7". This gave me a finished circumference of 22" - 24" for an Adult Beanie
If using chunkier yarn, a diameter of 6" will work as well.

This is what I did with the 4-Seasons DK yarn.  I just worked till I had a diameter of 6"

Let's check  circumference now
To check, you are either going to wear the beanie, or check with the head size chart given at the top of this blog or the calculations at the bottom of the blog.
Remember that yarn stretches -more so with wear.

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k
First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M
What is a chain stitch ?  https://youtu.be/pXx5ukBjKkY

Round 7 : Eyelet round
sc in the 1st dc ;
(ch 1, sk next dc, sc in the next dc ;
rep (to) all around.
ch 1 & join with a sl-st to the1st st (18 , 24 , 3, 36 ch-1 sps )

Round 8 :
4 dc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
*sk next ch-sp, (4 dc in the next ch-sp)* ;
rep *to* all around.
join with a sl-st to the1st st

Now we are going to work a round of ch-sps all around.
As we need to get a sc in between 4 dc, I've decided to work between the 2nd & 3rd dc.  I just felt that that keeps the morning glory-like bell flower even.
Here's what I've done

In case you find this too confusing, just sl-st into the 2nd dc and work the sc on that.. that's how I have written the pattern anyway.
Do whatever suits you.. it does not really affect the pattern
If it looks slightly different, then you have a slightly different pattern.
Work loose chains for the ch-3 between 2 sc.

Round 9 :
sl-st to the 2nd dc ; sc in the same 2nd dc ;
(ch 3, sk next 4 dc, sc in the next dc)
rep (to) all around.
ch 3, join with a sl-st to the1st st

This is how we work it

                                             ... and this is how it will look
Round 10 :
4 dc in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
and in each ch-sp all around.
join with a sl-st to the1st st

Rounds 11 - 16 :
Rep Rounds 9 & 10

Round 17 :
Rep Round 9

Round 18 :
hdc in the 1st st ; 3 hdc in the next ch-3 sp ;
(hdc in the next st ; 3 hdc in the next ch-3 sp)
 rep (to) all around.
Join with a sl-st to the1st st (36 , 48 , 60 72 sts)

Rounds 19 - 20 :
hdc in the 1st st and in each hdc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the1st st (36 , 48 , 60 72 sts)

You could add a round of picot if you like.  I'd say a picot every 3rd or 4th st depending on the thickness of your yarn.

In case the video does not come on, please go to https://youtu.be/8s3zVaBcn4s

Fasten off and weave in ends.
Block as per yarn requirement, if needed.

As mentioned before, this project has a matching cowl at https://shyamanivas.blogspot.com/2021/07/morning-glory-cowl.html and a pair of fingerless gloves at https://shyamanivas.blogspot.com/2021/07/morning-glory-fingerless-gloves.html

Head Circumference Calculations
1. Hat circumference = measure around the head just above ears and subtract one inch for a nicely fitted finished hat.
2. Crown width = (this is a flat circular top of the hat) you need to divide hat circumference by 3.14 (pi).
3. Hat height = Head circumference / 10 x 4.

So you need to measure circumference of the head (round head measurement) and keep checking the outer circumference of your work.
There is another trick for measuring circumference (without running your measure tape all around the edge of your circle as you are working).
This works for a cap that you are working top down, from the crown of the head.
It works by dividing your round head measure by pi (3.14).
So say your head measurement is 22, divide 22 by 3.14 = 7.
Remember when calculating diameter, you must account for the stretch of your yarn too.
So once the ‘flat portion’ for the crown (or the first few rounds while you are still increasing) of your cap is 7” diameter, you can stop increases and start increasing just the length (without increasing stitches for the round)
