MORNING GLORY COWL

MORNING GLORY COWL

I have been given yet another bag of yarn and requested to make beanies & / or scarves for the homeless.  I'm hoping that there's going to be even more yarn - which also means there will be more patterns discovered and written.

This project has matching beanies in four sizes at  https://shyamanivas.blogspot.com/2021/05/morning-glory-beanie.html ; and a pair of fingerless gloves at https://shyamanivas.blogspot.com/2021/06/really-easy-fingerless-gloves.html

Thanks for joining me.  Come along, let’s create something beautiful

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers.

Materials used : Today I’ve used ~ 150 gms 4-Seasons DK acrylic  yarn with a 7 mm crochet hook ; embroidery needle fabric glue to seal ends ; crochet stitch markers

For Indians The yarn I’ve used twice / 2 times as thick as our Vardhaman Oswal  acrylic yarns  or Laura knitting cotton.  So to get the thickness I'm using with a 7mm hook, hold 2 strands together
You could use Anchor , Red rose , 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns Baby soft acrylic yarn , Ganga Spectrum as well

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, Caron Simply Soft , Bernat Softee chunky.
but I think you could also use Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn

Difficulty level : Intermediate
Size made :  48" x 8.5"
Size only given for yarn estimation.  You can make this project to any size you want.

Stitches used :  Using U.S. terminology
Starting slip knot : https://youtu.be/lJcqsVcs8cw
Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs

Abbreviations used :
sc : single crochet            hdc : Half Double crochet
ch : chain                         ch-sp : chain space
sp : space                        rep : Repeat
hk : hook                          lp (s) : loop(s)
yo : yarn over                   sl-st : slip stitch

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rounds with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for video tutorials of all the stitches used in today’s pattern.
Please note that I take a lot of trouble to give loads of tips through my pattern sheet, so please read through the full sheet before you pick up your hook n yarn.

You can use this pattern to make a cowl as well as a scarf or wrap.
We will work along the length of our project and work the pattern for as wide as we want it.

To make a cowl, the stitch count for our pattern is in multiples of 4
To make a scarf or wrap, the stitch count for our pattern is in multiples of 4 + 3

To make a cowl, we will work in rounds, and join with a sl-st at the end of every round.
To make a scarf or wrap, we will work in rows and turn at the end of every row

I made a cowl, and it's about 8.5" wide.
I'd say you work about 8 - 9" (width) for a cowl or scarf and about 18 - 20" (width) for a wrap.  Length for the project depends on you - but I'd say about 45 - 48" for a medium sized cowl (that will wrap at least twice around the neck)

Pattern for cowl :
For the cowl, we will work along the length of the project.  So we will start with as many fsc as you need for the length of your cowl and then join the fsc chain.  We then work in rounds for the whole project till you have the width you want for the cowl.

The trick here is to be careful to keep your fsc chain flat so you join the ends correctly.
We are working with a long length, so take a little time to get this bit right.

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

What is a slip stitch : https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Start Round1 : with as many fsc , in multiples of 4 , as you need for the length of your cowl.

Keeping your fsc chain flat, join to the 1st st with a sl-st.

I worked till I had 48" in length.

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;

yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8

What is a chain stitch ?  https://youtu.be/pXx5ukBjKkY

In the following round, depending on the thickness of your yarn, use a sc or a hdc.

Round 2 : sc in the 1st st ;

(ch 1, sk next fsc, sc in the next fsc ;
rep (to) all around.

ch 1 & join with a sl-st to the1st st

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);

[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Round 3 : 4 dc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
*sk next ch-sp, (4 dc in the next ch-sp)* ;
rep *to* all around.
join with a sl-st to the1st st

Now we are going to work a round of ch-sps all around.
As we need to get a sc in between 4 dc, I've decided to work between the 2nd & 3rd dc.  I just felt that that keeps the morning glory-like bell flower even.
Here's what I've done

In case you find this too confusing, just sl-st into the 2nd dc and work the sc on that.. that's how I have written the pattern anyway.
Do whatever suits you.. it does not really affect the pattern
If it looks slightly different, then you have a slightly different pattern

Once again, in the following round, depending on the thickness of your yarn, use a sc or a hdc.
Round 4 : sl-st to the 2nd dc ; sc in the same 2nd dc ;
(ch 3, sk next 3 dc, sc between the 2nd & 3rd dc of the 4-dc set)
rep (to) all around.
ch 3, join with a sl-st to the1st st

This is how we work it.  See the st between the 2nd & 3rd dc

                                             ... and this is how it will look
Round 5 : 4 dc in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
& in each ch-3 sp all around.
join with a sl-st to the1st st

and that's our pattern done ! How quick & easy is this, huh?

Rep Rounds 4 & 5 till you get the width you need or your cowl
I worked till I had about 8"

Last Round : sc in the 1st st and in each st all around.

Join to the 1st st with a sl-st.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

How easy was this, huh?

If you are making a cowl, use one of the joining methods given below to join the two ends of your cowl

If you are making a scarf, then you could attach tassels at the end.

If you are making a wrap, then you just need to make it wider.

Pattern for scarf / wrap :
For the scarf or warp, we will work in rows.
You have a choice : You can work along the length or width for your project

1) If you work along the length, then your pattern runs from the top to bottom along the length ; and (like for the cowl) you will work it for as wide as you want your project.
As this is a bell like flower, maybe this is a good idea, as the bell flower shape will show

2) If you work along the width, then your pattern will run from side to side and you will work the project for as long as you want it

Start Row 1 : with as many fsc , in multiples of 4 + 3 , as you need for the length or width of your scarf / wrap. Turn

In the following row, depending on the thickness of your yarn, use a sc or a hdc.

Row 2 : sc in the 1st st ;

(ch 1, sk next fsc, sc in the next fsc) ;
rep (to) till end.  Turn

Row 3 : 4 dc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
*sk next ch-sp, (4 dc in the next ch-sp)* ;
rep *to* till end.  Turn

Now we are going to work a row of ch-3 sps.
As we need to get a sc in between 4 dc, I've decided to work between the 2nd & 3rd dc.  I just felt that that keeps the morning glory-like bell flower even.
Take a look at the photos above (for cowl)

In case you find this too confusing, just sl-st into the 2nd dc and work the sc on that.. that's how I have written the pattern anyway.
Do whatever suits you.. it does not really affect the pattern
If it looks slightly different, then you have a slightly different pattern

Once again, in the following row, depending on the thickness of your yarn, use a sc or a hdc.
Row 4 : sc in the 1st st ;
ch 1, sk next dc,  [sc between the 2nd & 3rd dc of the 4-dc set] ;
(ch 3, sk next 4 dc, rep [to])
rep (to) till last 4-dc set ;
ch 1, sk next dc, sc in the last dc.  Turn

Row 5 : dc in the 1st sc.
4 dc in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
and in each ch-sp till the last ch-3 sp ;
dc in the last sc.  Turn

Row 6 : sc in the 1st st ;
ch 3, sk next 2 dc,  [sc between the 2nd & 3rd dc of the 4-dc set] ;
(ch 3, sk next 4 dc, rep [to])
rep (to) till last 4-dc set ;
ch 3, sk next 2 dc, sc in the last dc.  Turn

Row 7 : Rep Row 5

and that's our pattern done ! How quick & easy is this, huh?

Rep Rows 4 - 7 till you get the width you need or your cowl, ending with Row 5 or 7.

Last Row : sc in the 1st st and in each st all around.

Join to the 1st st with a sl-st.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
