Foundation double crochet (fdc) : This is a unique way of starting a project directly with a row of double crochet stitches. Here is an easy video tutorial https://youtu.be/hjNUYVvyU9k
Our stitch count for the pattern is in multiples of 3 +2.
Start Row 1 : with fsc in multiples of 3 + 2 for the length you need for your cowl or cowl ; OR
with fdc in multiples of 3 + 2 for the length you need for your scarf or cowl.
Keep a count (write it down) of the number of stitches you start with.
You will need to finish with these same number of stitches on your last row of your scarf.
Before we start our heart pattern stitch, let's take a look at how we will work it.
a) We use a dc 4-tog for our pattern, but we work it over 2 sts, skipping 1 st in between.
So we work a dc 2-tog (or the 1st 2 legs of our dc 4-tog) in 1 st, sk the next st and work a dc 2-tog (or the last 2 legs of our dc 4-tog) in the next st, and then pull all loops together.
and b) We work it over the previous stitch and the next stitch. So the 1st leg (which is 2 stitches of our dc 4-tog) is in the previous stitch, we skip the stitch in between and the 2nd leg (which is the last 2 sts of our dc 4-tog) is worked over the next st.
Got it?
I will call this stitch our Split dc 4-tog
Row 2 : dc in the 1st st ;
[ch 1, sk next st, Split dc 4-tog over the previous st (i.e. the dc ,
& sk the next st), and the next st] ;
rep [to] till the last 2 sts ;
ch 1, sk next st, dc in the last st.
We nw work our Split dc 4-tog over the ch-sps only all through.
The start and end dc are worked in the dc from the earlier row
Row 3 : dc in the 1st st ;
[ch 1, Split dc 4-tog over the previous ch-sp (i.e. after the 1st dc) ,
sk the next st (i.e. the dc 4-tog) , and the next ch-sp] ;
rep [to] till the last st ;
ch 1, dc in the last st.
If you are making a cowl, use one of the joining methods given below to join the two ends of your cowl
If you are making a scarf, then you need to finish this end to match the start
Last Row : dc in the 1st dc ;
(dc in the next ch-sp ; dc in the next st) ;
rep (to) till end.
