FLIP IT COWL

FLIP IT COWL

I have been given a third bag of yarn and requested to make beanies & / or scarves for the homeless.  I'm hoping that there's going to be even more yarn - which also means there will be more patterns discovered and written.

This creation has a matching beanie at  https://shyamanivas.blogspot.com/2021/06/flip-it-beanie.html and a matching pair of fingerless gloves at  https://shyamanivas.blogspot.com/2021/06/flip-it-fingerless-gloves.html

Today's project is completely reversible - so yaay!

Thanks for joining me.  Come along, let’s create something beautiful

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.

All my blogs can be printed.  Find the printer friendly (green) link on the right side of this blog.  You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.

Remember that you only print if absolutely essential.  Save paper – Save Our Earth.

Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation.

Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.

To purchase this or similar yarn online, click the highlighted links below to buy your yarns online via Amazon.  While you will still pay the same, I may get paid by Amazon as well.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers.

Materials used : Today I’ve used ~ 250 gms 5-Seasons DK acrylic  yarn with a 7 mm crochet hook ; embroidery needle fabric glue to seal ends ; crochet stitch markers

For Indians The yarn I’ve used twice as thick as our Indian Vardhaman / Oswal  acrylic yarns or Laura knitting cotton .
You could use Anchor , Red rose , 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns Baby soft acrylic yarn , Ganga Spectrum as well

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have, I’d suggest Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, Caron Simply Soft , Bernat Softee chunky.

Difficulty level : Advanced
Size made :  48" x 9"
Size only given for yarn estimation.

Abbreviations used :

hk : hook                          lp (s) : loop(s)
yo : yarn over                   sl-st : slip stitch

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rounds with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for video tutorials of all the stitches used in today’s pattern.
Please note that I take a lot of trouble to give loads of tips through my pattern sheet, so please read through the full sheet before you pick up your hook n yarn.

For today's cowl, we work along the length of the cowl - all the way up and down.
There is no stitch count for the project.
So we will start with as many foundation double crochet (fdc) row as you need for the length of your cowl and then join the fsc chain.  We then work in rounds for the whole project till you have the width you want for the cowl.  So we work all the way up and down, increasing the width till you reach the width/size you want for your cowl / scarf

The trick here is to be careful to keep your fsc chain flat so you join the ends correctly.
We are working with a long length, so take a little time to get this bit right.

Foundation double crochet (fdc) : This is a unique way of starting a project directly with a row of double crochet stitches.  Here is an easy video tutorial https://youtu.be/hjNUYVvyU9k

Start Row 1 : with fdc for the length you want for your cowl / scarf. Turn

I started with fdc for 48"

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);

[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Row 2 : dc in the 1st st ; & in each still till end. Turn.

Single crochet back loop only (sc-blo) : https://youtu.be/TaQI3Vu9VRQ

Row 3 : sc-blo in the 1st st and in each st till end. Turn.

Single crochet front loop only (sc-flo) : https://youtu.be/4tjL1MtKP6U

Row 4 : sc-flo in the 1st st and in each st till end. Turn.

Rows 5 - 6 : dc in the 1st st ; & in each still till end. Turn.

.. and thats our pattern done !

Rep Rows 3 - 6 for the width you want for your cowl or scarf, ending with Row 6.
My cowl is about 9" wide

If you are making a cowl, use one of the joining methods given below to join the two ends of your cowl

If you are making a scarf, then you could attach tassels at the end.

If you are making a wrap, then you just need to make it wider.

I worked till I had about 9" wide.  I then joined the two ends to make a cowl.
I'd say you work about 8 - 9" (width) for a cowl or scarf and about 18 - 20" (width) for a wrap.  Length for the project depends on you - but I'd say about 45 - 48" for a medium sized cowl (that will wrap at least twice around the neck)
