FLIP-IT BEANIE

FLIP-IT BEANIE

I have been given a second bag of yarn and requested to make beanies & / or scarves for the homeless.  I'm hoping that there's going to be even more yarn - which also means there will be more patterns discovered and written.

In my patterns, I make you think .. a little bit.  But you will end up making something so beautiful and it will be totally unique and original.
Thanks for joining me.  Come along, let’s create something beautiful with this gorgeous chunky yarn.

This creation has a matching cowl at https://shyamanivas.blogspot.com/2021/06/flip-it-cowl.html and a matching pair of fingerless gloves at  https://shyamanivas.blogspot.com/2021/06/flip-it-fingerless-gloves.html

Come along and let’s make a pair of gloves (or the whole Flip it set) today.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers.

Materials used : Today I’ve used ~ 100 gms/79 m of Panda Zoomy acrylic with a 7.5 mm crochet hook ; embroidery needle fabric glue to seal ends ; crochet stitch markers

For Indians The yarn I’ve used is similar in thickness to about 3 strands of our Vardhaman acrylic yarn or Laura knitting cotton .
You could use Anchor , Red rose , 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns as well as Oswal acrylic yarns ; Baby soft acrylic yarn , Ganga Spectrum as well

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.  Using chunky yarn just means that the project zooms ahead that much faster.  So if you want a thicker yarn, just use a few strands together.

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, Caron Simply Soft , Bernat Softee chunky.
but I think you could also use Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn
You may just have to tweak the gauge a bit.

Difficulty level : Easy to Intermediate.
Size made : Adult beanie : 22" x 8.25"
Size only given for yarn estimation.

Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs
Crab Stitch or Reverse Single Crochet stitch : https://youtu.be/cG3crwyHPnk

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);

[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

What is a chain stitch ?  https://youtu.be/pXx5ukBjKkY

Here is a sizing chart for general head sizing :

Abbreviations used :
sc : single crochet            hdc : Half Double crochet
ch : chain                         ch-sp : chain space
sp : space                        rep : Repeat
hk : hook                          lp (s) : loop(s)
yo : yarn over                   sl-st : slip stitch

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rounds with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for video tutorials of all the stitches used in today’s pattern.
Please note that I take a lot of trouble to give loads of tips through my pattern sheet, so please read through the full sheet before you pick up your hook n yarn.

So like I've said, you need to do a little bit of thinking.
1) Go to the top of this blog and check the head sizing chart to get the circumference and length that you need for the person you are making this beanie for.

2) Do a quick swatch with your yarn to figure out how many stitches make 1".
So for a child, I'd say a brim of 1" would suffice, and for a young adult say 2" and an adult 3".

3) Our pattern has different sets of stitches : We will work sc-blo (single crochet back look only) or sc-flo (single crochet front look only) for the brim section ; we will then work hdc or half double for the body of the cap and sc for the top or crown of cap.

4) We work hdc on hdc and sc on sc for the body of the cap

5) When we start brim-side we work sc-blo and when we end brim-side we work sc-flo

Good - now that we have this visual map, let's start.

Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;

yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

The front and back of work

and the brim

Start Row 1 : with 19 fsc for an adult (or as many fsc as you need for the length of the cap from brim to crown)

Single crochet back loop only (sc-blo) : https://youtu.be/TaQI3Vu9VRQ

Row 2 : sc-blo in the 1st 5 fsc ; hdc in the next 9 fsc ; sc in the last 5 fsc. Turn.

Note : If you are not able to get the length you need for your beanie with 19 fsc, and are working more sts, then here's what you need to do :
Work sc- blo for the 1st 2", then work hdc all the way till the last 2 " and work sc in the last 2". It does not matter how many sts make 2" for you.
Make a note of how many sts you are working for 2" each end

Single crochet front loop only (sc-flo) : https://youtu.be/4tjL1MtKP6U

Row 3 : sc in the 1st 5 sc ; hdc in the next 9 hdc ; sc-flo in the last 5 sts. Turn.

Note : In case you have worked more fsc, then work sc for the 1st 2" (or the number of sts you have made a note of for this end), then work hdc all the way till the last 2 " and work sc in the last 2" (or once again, the number of sts you worked this end).

Row 4 : sc-blo in the 1st 5 sts ; hdc in the next 9 hdc ; sc in the last 5 sc. Turn.

Note : The same idea applies here as well - as with Row 2.

Rep Rows 3 & 4 till you have the width or circumference you need for your beanie.

Whipstitch to join : https://youtu.be/wZ-9LNzftMA
Single crochet to join : https://youtu.be/6FXoW_47_dI

Use one of the joining methods to join along the side of the beanie.
Then using an embroidery needle, work a running stitch all along the smaller open end of the beanie, pulling it together as you work. (Photos below for reference)
.. and that' sit.. your beanie done !

The beauty of this pattern is that it is totally reversible

Tweak :  As you've now done the pattern, you'll understand this tweak.
In our pattern, we start with the bottom (brim) of our beanie and work sc-blo or sc-flo.
Then there's a stretch of hdc and we end with a sc for the crown section. Right?
Now instead of the sc in the crown section, work sl-sts both ways - i.e. when heading up to the crown, and when heading back to the brim.
One small tweak and it's a slightly different pattern.

This is how that will look.  The hook is on the sl-st (crown end)

As we're working a rectangle of sorts for this pattern, the calculations below do not matter. However, I think it's a good idea to know how to calculate this anyway, so keep it handy.

As mentioned before, this creation has a matching cowl at https://shyamanivas.blogspot.com/2021/06/flip-it-cowl.html and a matching pair of fingerless gloves at  https://shyamanivas.blogspot.com/2021/06/flip-it-fingerless-gloves.html

1. Hat circumference = measure around the head just above ears and subtract one inch for a nicely fitted finished hat.
2. Crown width = (this is a flat circular top of the hat) you need to divide hat circumference by 3.14 (pi).
3. Hat height = Head circumference / 10 x 4.

So you need to measure circumference of the head (round head measurement) and keep checking the outer circumference of your work.
There is another trick for measuring circumference (without running your measure tape all around the edge of your circle as you are working).
This works for a cap that you are working top down, from the crown of the head.
It works by dividing your round head measure by pi (3.14).
So say your head measurement is 22, divide 22 by 3.14 = 7.
Remember when calculating diameter, you must account for the stretch of your yarn too.
So once the ‘flat portion’ for the crown (or the first few rounds while you are still increasing) of your cap is 7” diameter, you can stop increases and start increasing just the length (without increasing stitches for the round)
Right then, back to the pattern sheet.
